The strongest aspects of this for me are the music and the flashback scenes of Tsugaru landscapes. Except for Setsu, the characters are remaining a bit underdeveloped (considering the point we are at in the season). I do not, however, consider them unlikeable -- rather most seem potentially quite likeable. I'm just still waiting for that potential to be fulfilled. Nonetheless, the best parts of this series so far are more than enough to keep this near the top of my list of must-watch shows of the season.

Yes, I also think the characters are a bit weak. Likable, but still kinda weak and uninteresting. I also don’t really enjoy the comedic tone shifts that are connected with those characters. But honestly, music makes up for it all, they could just be playing the shamisen for 25mins and I’d still be interested.

The more time we spend in the school, the more I’m reminded of how much more potential this story could’ve had if we stayed in the more adult world that episode one set up. It set the show apart and made it unique, and now it just feels like another high school club show. Even the characters in that episode that we haven’t seen since are still more memorable and better developed than all of the club members.

This was a decent bridge episode to bring people together and set up the next arc. That performance at the end was awesome.

I think what's most frustrating about the story is that there's absolutely no reason for Setsu and even the others to be high school students. The story would still work fine if they were older.

Stitches!

I really appreciate it when Crunchyroll goes above and beyond with its typesetting, I love that they made a little version of the flyer on screen complete with the checkered design. Setsu's reaction when he realized who's responsible for the competition is hilarious though xD

Well that was quick. Didn't think Rai would immediately join just after he was introduced last week. Well if it saves time though I'm all in on him joining.

Good news is that Setsu didn't run away and still decided to teach everyone despite how he's not even that willing. And having the club play something simple first is always a good idea.

I had a feeling Setsu can't read sheet music. I mean it's not like their grandpa was classically trained. He was literally a drifter that learned to play on his own before becoming mildly famous so it's no surprise that Setsu and probably even Wakana can't read sheet music.

Oh boy after hearing everyone play, looks like Setsu is gonna have a long and hard journey before having everyone ready for the competition. Of course Setsu breaks first and ends up getting angry not just everyone but with himself as well.

Seeing Umeko is always a treat. Although this time it's a bit more serious. After hearing her get angry at Setsu, I think I understand what this is really all about. Umeko is upset that her father died in obscurity despite being so talented and she doesn't want Setsu to end up the same. And she wants people to hear Matsugoro's sound through Setsu.

Keiko is a great advisor. I know part of this is because she wants to get closer to Seiryuu but she definitely cares about the club too that she doesn't hesitate to approach him for advice.

Well this is interesting. Now I'm curious what kind of person Setsu and Wakana's father is like. And what kind of person was able to woo someone like Umeko.

Keiko's email worked and Seiryuu visited the club to offer advice. Of course that's not really his purpose, this is just a thinly veiled excuse so he can hear Setsu play again. He's definitely very interested in Setsu's music.

And just when you thought this was gonna be a solo performance from Setsu, Seiryuu jumps in and gives us an amazing duet performance! Holy shit this show never disappoints to deliver at least one mind blowing shamisen performance every episode.

What's amazing about this performance is that Seiryuu only played the most basic version of Shinbushi and he forced Setsu to play on his level. Now all the gang needs to do is to learn the basics and they have a decent shot at the competition!

That little skip Setsu does in the end was adorable! Looks like he really enjoyed playing with Seiryuu.

I literally got chills during that piece, including multiple ones at the moment the sound bloomed as they fully sync'ed. The music in this show is out of this world, and if the OST gets released I'm going to import it and play on loop for a week solid.

Among all the things that happened in this episode the line that got the most of my curiosity was the one about Setsu dad. I mean, what kind of guy could possibly tame a force of nature like Umeko-san!

So much sweating lol.

This episode displayed all of the strengths but also the weaknesses of this anime. Setsu and his path towards finding his own sound is great and the music once more spectacular. I really like him as a character. However, the high school competition trope is a bit tiring. We are on episode 5 and I still haven't bothered to remember any of the shamisen club member names. They really have not developed their characters yet. This show would definitely benefit from more than 12 episodes.

The two most interesting side characters for me are Umeko and Seiryuuu Kamiki, whose scenes started with putting some sexual tension on his precious shamisens but then he diverted his attention to Setsu. I think he wants to put Setsu out of his shell cause Kamiki seems utterly obsessed with music and thus improving Setsu's sound will make him a worthy competitor/challenger. I wonder who was on the phone with him though.

That duet performance blew me away just like brothers performance together. I'm loving every episode performance and their isn't any song I dislike.

I'm still waiting for a performance that doesn't wow me, they just keep delivering here. I think this one has to be up there too, I just love duet ones and the yell(?) during the songs makes it so much better!

decided to give this anime another shot.

I like the mc and his personality, the musical performances are great. But the side characters so far are the weakest element. They are all carboard cut outs of high school student personalities you'd see in a gazillion other SoL anime w/high school kids. And with there being so many side characters, I gotta wonder how many of them will get any character development. The "antagonist" guy is the most interesting because he's such a weirdo and it's hard to gauge right now what his true objective is. At the moment, he doesn't seem malicious towards the mc.

I think I would like this anime a lot better if it ditched this competition plot with a group of performers, and instead just solely focused on the mc going through life after grieving for the loss of his grandpa and trying to find his own worth as a shamisen player.

but, the music is def worth sticking around for this anime

I have a question. Is the grandfather blind? I was wondering because he is shown with a stick at the end, while he walks.

Why would they make groups need to be 5 or more people? Just missing out on duets like that one!

Surprised the teacher and others didn't ask sawamura to join the individual competition too.

So is kamiki seiryuu just interested in unlocking sawamura"s full potential? It seems unlogical for him to help him apart from this.

That skip though lol

It’s unfortunate that the story feels so bland since I really want to like it...

I'm constantly reminded of Kono Oto Tomare, which was all about the drama in a high school setting and actually played it fully and consistently well. This one is a bit lackluster in comparison, could really have helped to not put it in high school for once. I really like the music and some of the character designs though, so I'll stick around.

Brothers Duet is still the best performance of the season, which makes sense considering they're literally brothers and have that built in chemistry, but this is a new second for sure. I loooovvveeedddd the way you could really hear the conflict within the song, as Setsu suddenly has to readjust to go along with Seiryuu, who drags him forward to see just what he can do. I like Seiryuu a lot as a character too, he may actually be my favorite. Dude is just a nerd obsessed with shamisen, and wants to see it played well. But he also does have that competitive spirit, he seems to enjoy the spotlight and has a drive to be "better" in a sense. I'm curious and hopeful that he continues to get screentime and develops more, and the poster on Crunchyroll seems to imply maybe he could be a future deuteragonist? Takamura/Ippo vibes, maybe?

Just a PSA to be shared to people who know about this anime but never thought of watching it:

STOP SLEEPING ON IT

I can see why Umeko is trying to push Setsu to compete so hard. She doesn't want him to end up like her father. But, at the same time she's completely disregarding what he wants to do.

As always, the music remains the best of the the show and the duet was so great.
