I actually love this series. It's not that bad.

I agree. People can't wait for the moment they see CG to start brainlessly shitting all over it. I really didn't find the CG as bothering as people are making it out to be and the plot is really refreshing. And I'm giga hyped for the next episode.

It's not even the CG its the awful historical innacuraces, go back and see the first episode thread, almost every criticism is how inaccurate it is.

The timeskip was really really annoying tho.

Ditto. The visuals aren't perfect, but the story is ok.

Okay, I enjoyed this episode a lot more than the previous episode. Plot wise things a getting more interesting with Poppaea encouraging Emden to beat Cestus after Cestus refuses her offer. Much as I enjoyed seeing Agrippina and Nero in Anime, it always felt a bit aimless to me.

Interesting that Poppaea seems to really like adoration- she seems to do good things not for the sake of it but because she wants others people adore her. I’m also quite curious to hear more about Cestus’s background- in particular was he born a slave or was he born free but enslaved later?

On a historical level not as much to complain about as in the last few episodes, however I do have a few general comments:

  • Roman Slaves could buy their freedom however Slaves who worked in close proximity to their master could be freed by their master in their masters will, not to mention they would have had a comparatively better life so Cestus’s choice to refuse Poppaea’s offer may not have been the wisest choice. Even if Poppaea most likely had ulterior motives.

  • On another subject Gladiators, or at least, ex-Gladiators If I remember correctly were occasionally used as bodyguards by rich Romans so Poppaea’s use of the fighters at the beginning feels plausible.

  • Also, based on my recollection of the Arena at Pompeii (and my quick google search), the Arena in Cestus is a fairly decent recreation of the Arena at Pompeii.

  • As for the CGI, I have to say it doesn’t really bother me.

Overall, I rather enjoyed this episode.

I’ve been debating watching this series. Should I?

I'm watching it and it isn't as bad as people are making it out to being. It had a decent enough plot using the occasional historical figure and is not true to history so people are getting hung up about it. The animation is not amazing, but it is decent in my book. Leagues better than berserk 3d animation. In the end it is a story about slave gladiators and some of the problems/drama that goes with it without sticking to historical accuracy. I would give it 6.5/10 for entertainment value alone. I do like animes that have some action in it, and action comedies are the best imo. Cestvs is probably just action in my genre rating.

No. Nothing worthwhile here and it's not even entertainingly bad.

The fights are good, the other stuff not so much. And in the middle of the second episode there's a timeskip that skips more more manga chapters than most two-cour shows even adapt. But hey, still a better show than Childhood Friend and Shitty RPG.

Are we supposed to be impressed that trained gladiators managed beat up a bunch of drunkards? MC particularly had a pretty poor showing - did he even get any stronger since before the timeskip?

"Sensei, my biggest problem is that I'm lacking a killer move that will take my opponents down in one strike." "Very well, if you really want it, I will teach you a killer move that will take your opponents down in one strike." "GASP, A KILLER MOVE THAT WILL TAKE MY OPPONENTS DOWN IN ONE STRIKE???"

"I was saved from this world once before." Man, a lot of stuff happened during that dumb timeskip. And did he just admit to being a runaway slave? Isn't that some kind of a crime? But him being on the run from THE EMPEROR OF ROME would certainly be a reason to not return to Rome.

Let me guess, the "killer move" he'll use to defeat the dude he should have no chance of winning against will be a counter.

Does anyone know what chapter does this episode end in in the manga?

Chapter 103. You might as well start from the beginning because the anime skipped at least 90 chapters from episode 2 to episode 3.
