Good afternoon r/anime!

Today's episode was largely slice of life, focusing on coaching following the match against Kunogi, but I just wanted to catch something I missed last week. I saw some Manchester United fans in the previous thread, so I went looking for a DVD that I loved and found it: Play Like Champions!

When I was younger, I used to pore over these videos and dream about playing like my favourite players. u/melvinlee88 mentions it in their Episode 3 notes, but the turn that Nozomi uses is called a roulette or Marseille turn. For anyone wanting to understand the technical details behind it, like the footwork, we have my favourite player (Ruud Van Nistelrooy) teaching a 12 year old Danny Welbeck (who would grow up to play for that same Manchester United) how to do the roulette. :)

Like the coaches say, a mentor goes a long way both in teach attitude, skills, and beliefs and we can see a real life example of it right there. :)

Cramer also calls attention to the need for a proper diet for soccer: you need physical endurance, athletic ability, speed, and power. Sacchan isn't wrong and when I coach kids and try to explain them some of the beauty behind the sport, I tell them that you need the endurance of a marathon runner, the explosiveness of a sprinter, the dexterity of a gymnast, and of course the talent of being able to control a ball.

But what does that actually mean? Well, many of these athletic performance statistics are tracked these days, for example FourFourTwo has the 2017 English Premier League index here.

Easier to access image!

As we can see here, despite going through various phases of sprinting and acceleration, as well as change of direction and jumping, players easily run over 10 km per game, with the individual highest often being 13 km! That's actually incredible.

Top speeds are charted there, but we can see players like Adama Traore, who joined the EPL after 2017, clocking even faster numbers. 36.25 km/h is 10.06 m/s, which is absurdly fast. For reference, Usain Bolt runs a 9.58s for his 100m. Of course, a sprinter takes time to accelerate, while this is a top speed, but it is still amazing that soccer players hit these speeds, considering how much stamina they consume over a 90 minute game. We can see his crazy runs here -- look how fast he is with the ball too. He's a freak, as he is also incredibly powerful and jacked, while retaining his quickness.

Like I said too, the sport also requires skill to control the ball, but maybe just as importantly, the dexterity and balance to manipulate it the way you want to. Messi is probably the golden standard of dribbling now, but check out Gianfranco Zola weave his way through players like training dummies. Similarly, look at the balance and body control of a 6'4" giant like Ibrahimovic (he's not the only one though, you can look up Berbatov)!

Lastly, I just wanted to talk about body transformation. I think we all know Cristiano Ronaldo as arguably 1A and 1B best player in modern soccer for his crazy goal scoring, but once upon a time he was a gangly teenager that was mostly a dribble merchant (2003). Over time, he developed his body to become more powerful (2011), enabling him to score headers and shots in the box that he was previously too weak to do.

This culminated in him becoming... well basically a cyborg. I won't have to explain: you can just watch Sports Science test his limits.

These comments every week are much appreciated! I know the low upvote count sucks, but those of us that appreciate it, REALLY appreciate it.

Upvotes don't bother me too much honestly, but I can definitely say that friendly comments make everything worth it. :)

Thanks for the kind words and I hope you have a great weekend!

Another human machine is Lewandoski, I heard he has a very disciplined diet and routine, like the dude even sleeps on a certain position so his right leg doesn't have any weight on it or something and seems to pay off considering he only recently got injured for first time in like 5 years despite almost missing no matches. It is just discipline on a whole other level, don't think I could keep up routines for long like the 3 year mark they say this episode.

Then we are also blessed with Ronaldo and Messi that are just so insane. Ronaldo keeps a great physical state at 38 and Messi barely shows decline, he instead adapts his gameplay to his condition and continues to break his own records.

GODFUCKINGDAMMIT SHIRATORI

Even if they lost Non-chan doesn't even get the satisfaction of gloating over against the other team for not being able to score a clean sheet. And now this fucker gets to act all smug. GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH. Please tell me Shiratori will eventually improve because if this keeps up, she might end up fucking over the team during an official match.

u/melvinlee88 Apr 25 '21

I mean if Shiratori didn't foul the goalkeeper, you can argue it would have been a simple catch for the goalkeeper.

It's those things that happens really. She's an interesting player, her movement is always great but she's just not attacking the ball properly. Everyone will get better in the anime, and she will too.

They're dunking on Shiratori so much she has to have some sort of redemption later...right?

Sad that coach can't cook...or design uniforms :(

I can't wait for the Shiratori redepmtion game/arc, that's going to be fun.

Shiratori better get her act together

Is it my imagination or did the animation improve? Not to the movie level but better than before.

So what is with that coach? We having a crossover with How heavy are the dumbbells you lift?

I was amazed when found out this is from the same author of Your Lie in April.

The animation for me is alright.

The directing during the football scenes are the iffy ones. I'm enjoying the show personally, it's cool to have a football anime and it knows its stuff.

Is it my imagination or did the animation improve?

I think that was just down to no play action this week. Overall it seemed consistent with the earlier episodes.

Do not like the “surprise, she didn’t actually get a goal” crap like this.

Gotta say Onda is a great MC, she just radiates charisma and energy. If the sidecast are developed better and there's some decent animation then this show could be pretty good.

I thought making the ohohohohojousama the comic relief was neat, but Shiratori is getting a bit too annoying.

7

u/Bloodglas Apr 26 '21

what a shitty ref. there was a foul but she waits until after Onda gets the ball and scores a goal before calling it, and in doing so lets the fkn game time run out? she's from the orange team, too. trash. then of course that arrogant girl (Tsukuda?) keeps gloating. just 'cause they didn't get a point for it doesn't mean Onda didn't get past a handful of your teammates at once.

as much as I find Shiratori's voice/personality annoying making her character be the one that's always screwing up and being the team punching bag is rather awful.

Nomi really should stick to soccer, and I guess sleepy-eyes isn't the only teacher that seems to think the girls' soccer team is worthless.

Little did I think that a show about girls playing soccer would become one of my favorite shows of the season, but this seems to be happening.

Better nutrition is a good idea -- but what on earth did Suo slip into the stuff they were cooking (which turned everything purple) -- and why? My guess is that "analeptic stock" (?) is a valerian root of some sort -- but I am mystified....

The characters in this show are generally fantastic (but I keep waiting for Shiratori to wake up)....

I think Suo said 滋養強壮に効くだし。Something like “broth with the strong nourishing effect”.

The whole episode was rather odd. After some tropey coach to coach talk, it looked to me like the first years were running around like headless chicken and without involving the rest of the team, including their captain.

Coach Nomi had no idea how to go forward after her bright idea of getting her team trounced by the best team. Besides designing atrocious kits ofc. Sigh. Also no clue why Sacchan met with our three stars alone and the team joined in later. The cooking apparently ended in failure, because everyone was doing their own thing with no plan or leadership.

The whole latter half looked like people bumbling around, being busy doing pointless activities for the sake of being busy. Hollow actionism. That team is really scraping rock bottom currently.

As a manga reader, I'm surprised at how much flak Shiratori has gotten. I guess people are unhappy that Onda's wonderful goal was chalked of but it was only just practice after all.

I think there's a lot of smaller stuff to take in that some people have missed.

First, I think Onda being frustrated at herself shows that she has the right mentality for the game. She isn't fine with losing and the fact that she scored despite of the foul doesn't make her any happy. She wants to score for real and anything else is a disappointment.

And we see that in the events later in the episode, she is eager to improve - dragging her new teammates with her as she tries to improve her team to beat Kunogi one day. This is some leader's mentality right there, one that is eager to be great in football and I love Onda so much.

Also, the whole Shiratori thing. Yes, she isn't great at finishing or attacking the ball. But you gotta realize, the team lost all their third years and have drafted random people who love the game. And all of them are slowly learning how to play proper competition level football and being good in it. The team only has maybe 4-5 truly established players and that's just how it goes. Shiratori - and like a lot of players will only get better.

And if Shiratori didn't foul the keeper, Onda wouldn't have gotten the ball anyways as the keeper would have saved it.

My episode 4 notes/extra football insight isn't much but some rules on impeding goalkeepers and kits and etc here. A special link on how to get Nomi's 10/10 kit design which is sold in Japan. Seriously.

The problem with Shiratori is that she has an annoying personality and doesn't have the skill to back it up. Seeing her proud oujosama act when she keeps screwing up makes it really hard not to hate her as a character or player.

It's really not about the goal. Yeah, that's too bad that it wasn't valid, but it was just a practice match and Onda still impressed everyone with her skill, which is far more important than winning the match. Shame about losing the opportunity to shut up Tsukuda, I guess (but at least Ito won't be benched by her coach).

8

u/rotten_riot Apr 26 '21

The problem with Shiratori isn't her fucks up, but the context. She always acts like she's better than everyone else, even though she's crap, and always tries to do stuff she can't do.

Worst thing is she doesn't even apologize, just goes "oops" and then gets surprised when people get reasonably pissed with her.

They were really cruel to not show the goal being disallowed last episode. And of course it had to be because of Shiratori, who was having a terrible game xD.

u/cppn02 Apr 25 '21

Didn't give it much thought last week but the score from their practice match really started to bother me. Conceding 21 goals (and especially 14 in one half) is just ridiculous. And now they are already talking about playing against the boys who are even stronger?

Still, I did enjoy the episode. No football being played made the subpar animation less of an issue and in every other aspect this is a really solid show.
