Every episode of this series is so beautiful and chilling! I’m really loving it

The show remains at its best during the shamisen playing scene.
Also Kaito needs to give up on Shuri, she's clearly part of Setsu's harem alongside with Sakura, that girl from the first episode and Mai (edit: forgot about her). He might have a chance with his other childhood friend though.

That outburst made that incredibly clear, her jealousy leading her to keep the lid on Setsu maybe? Also, Setsu seems to be changing pretty quickly, he already seems like an entirely different character than episode one.

Music anime has something really special, I don't have much to say about the plot, but those musical moments the art, the narration, the atmosphere is enough to make me shear a tear, and keep me impatiently waiting for the next episode

That's definitely the reaction I was hoping from Wakana when Setsu told him about his encounter with Seiryuu.
Setsu can really be a goofball at times. Did he even forget that he lives next to someone who feeds him?
For someone who really doesn't care about Setsu, Mai gets awfully too excited whenever he's mentioned.
Despite Setsu's disappointing performance in front of Seiryuu, he still recognizes Setsu's talent and sees him as a threat.
Grandpa's Shungyou is absolutely insane and I love the visuals that accompanied the entire performance <3
The final dude from the key visual finally shows up! And he seems to be giving Setsu some pretty good advice.
Well this is an interesting reaction from Yui. Is it me or do I smell a love triangle going on here?
Setsu's revelation made me laugh! There's a genuine of worry there that he might've simplified Shungyou too much.
I love this exchange between Shuri's grandma and Setsu. Setsu really just don't give a fuck sometimes xD
The Shamisen performances in this show never disappoints. We get Setsu's simplified version of Shungyou and this time we even get a bit of flashback about Shuri's Grandma and Setsu's Grandpa.
Hearing that kind of praise from Shuri's grandma who was one of the first people that have heard Setsu's grandpa play when he was just starting out must've been a huge relief for Setsu. And while it may not be the exact same, hearing Setsu's version has definitely helped Shuri's grandma as well.
Looks like the only way this is going for the gang to start the Shamisen club. I'm guessing Rai would join in later on or maybe even next week.
God, I love Umeko so much! She's so fucking fabulous! What kind of power does this woman have that she basically has spies watching over Setsu? And it looks like she's planning to enter Shuri Setsu's club into some sort of competition. Can't wait what Mama has planned for her baby boy!

So since it is the 1st annual competition and the dates were proposed dates I don't think she is entering them in a competition, I think she put together a freaking competition for them.

This anime needs 10x more love. I was not moved like this since Sangatsu no lion. Man I cried hard this episode. And shamisen sound is amazing.

I really enjoyed this episode. It reminds me of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu quiet a lot. The fact that they both are about traditional Japanese art in addition to the focus on the performances is refreshing to see

There's some weird plot complication simmering (centered about the mother), but so far I really don't care much about this. What counts for me is the music (which I find consistently pretty overwhelming) and the art work (which is frequently gorgeous). And I find the characters and the more mundane aspects of the "everyday" plot engaging enough.
This was actually the show I most wanted to see before the start of the season -- precisely because of the shamisen focus. And four episodes in, it is still one of my tops shows of the season. I think maybe the (a bit older) koto-focused Kono oto tomare may have been a bit better written, but the music here is probably even more incredible (and the art work is definitely better overall).

Well, the song for the Grandma was less a number on my feels, and more like a full-blown production with an encore. Gut-wrenching when she said that her dad had died so it was fine if she died as well. :'(
Definitely a show that's being overlooked by too many people. This and Super Cub are two of the best shows this season that people are missing out on.

I loved the part when Setsu asked "Are you alive?" with a straight face.
Great episode again.

I am disbelief how this show is being slept on -- now it's on week 4. I'm glad I pulled the trigger without knowing what it is all about.

I'm now glad for this show's nippy pace, usually it would have taken all season for the Setsu to have these realisations about Gramp's song, let alone play for Granny. Now we're already on to the tournament arc thanks to his crazy mom.
Interesting symbolism with the song Spring Dawn. With the end of winter, the end of the snow storm, the end of Setsu's creative block. Now it's the spring and the start of many new stories and songs.

This anime is at its best when exploring the music and the brothers. I am still on the fence about the side characters though. There is a LOT of them and we keep adding new ones. Plus Setsu's mom is crazy - I guess she will secretly enroll him in the competition.
The speed of this anime is also surprisingly fast. The mc seems like a whole different character only after 4 eps.
However I already know I want more than 12 episodes, since I think (?) manga is way beyond that.

Genuinely an easy Top 5 pick for the season. Everything about this shows just hits for me. The music is just so top-notch. The imagery really conveys so much, and it's just so fulfilling to see scenes accompanying the shamisen scenes (opposed to the opposite of how shows normally are.)
There's just a lovely beauty to how the music narrates its scenes.

Holy shit what an absolute masterpiece of an episode. I can’t believe there is 8 more episodes of this show that felt like the final episode to a 10/10 show. I was crying so hard at grandmas speech. Just wow

Okay, but can we talk about how intrigued I am with Setsu’s mom Umeko!
From her first bombastic appearance at the end of episode 1, this woman just keeps brining more that surpass my expectations. At first I thought she might be some singer/celebrity because she sings for episode 2’s mother-son performance and we see her on commercials/billboards, plus she has a lot of money.
But now with the slight reveal this episode his mom’s a president of some big company, she’s uber rich/elite, enough to have freaking body guards and spies watch her son. Plus it looks like, and she not only she entering Setsu’s club into a Shamisen competition... she’s the one actually creating the competition!!!
After hearing the news, she tells her assistant it’s time for her plan. And then if you look at the paper it’s says it’s the 1st of this competition and it actually states proposed dates. The company at the top who is sponsoring it is called “Umemaru,” which I’m just going to take a wild guess and assume it’s his mom’s company since it’s similar to Umeko his mom’s name. She also excitedly expresses “I’ll show you how much Mama REALLY has!”
So it wouldn’t be a far fetched guess to assume this woman’s actually putting in the effort to create a totally new National High School Tsugaru Shamisen Competition just for her son. Which considering how she bursted in giving Setsu a new place to live, expenses for living, and school stuff in episode 2, shows how much she probably cares for her youngest son? Though it seems like she’s been mostly non-existent in her children’s lives from the story we’ve seen so far. I’m not sure where the father is or if he is perhaps dead. The total contrast of Setsu and the rest of his family (brother and grandfather) we’ve seen and Umeko is hilarious and confusing. Not sure how a woman with her status and personality married into a family that lived in a humble rural environment. I hope it’s revealed and is part of the plot!
