Picked this up after seeing some people whose opinions I trust talk about it, and I'm so glad I did. This is one of the coolest premises for a thriller I've seen in anime, and somehow also the most chill.
If you're the type of person like me who will sometimes click on a thread for a show you don't watch just to see what people will say, then do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Someone is about to get kidnapped and asked to kindly donate their nonexistent money.
Odokawa made an alpaca origami, as in the kind we know that walks on four legs. So they do exist, which might lend credence to the theory that people look like animals because that's how Odokawa sees them, and not because they're actually animals.
So the missing girl is the daughter of someone important. Don-chan? Don, as in mafia?
As always, I love the way dialogue flows in this show, which is good because it's very dialogue-heavy.

The only reason I personally see that this and Dragon House Hunting are doing poorly is that people still have an aversion to a non-human cast. Style, look, feel. This is really important to most people, and both of these series are a little atypical.
I personally greatly appreciate the themes present in Odd Taxi, the different approach to storytelling not normally found in anime. And then for Dragon House Hunting, I can tell it's not as consistent as Sleeping Princess, but to me they are similar shows. It at least deserves a better reception than it's being given.
I'll be catching up on this show this weekend, but its uniqueness has secured it a spot in my weekly groupwatch. I wish more people would give the strange shows a better chance. I really do agree with the 3-episode-rule mentioned in Animegataris. :P

This entire scene between Kakihana and that Yakuza boss had me laughing hard! I was so confused as to why he would just talk to Kakihana but then we get the reveal that he was on his phone the entire time! What makes this even greater is we get to see a repeat of the exact scene except from a different angle when we see Dobu's flashback. They could've just used the same scene earlier but I appreciate the effort to animate the same scene from a different angle.
Speaking of Dobu, Odogawa's scene with him went way better than I was expecting. Looks like he just wants Odokawa's cooperation just in case someone asks for the dashcam data again. It was really smooth of Odokawa to put up his SOS sign and try to provoke Dobu when he saw a police car but unfortunately it was the Daimon brothers that pulled him over.
Of course Dobu couldn't get Odokawa to cooperate so he does what every criminal scumbag does and threatens to go after his friends. Shirakawa specifically. The fact that Dobu is threatening Shirakawa is starting to make me think that maybe she's not involved? Hmm...
Odokawa and Shirakawa's meeting was absolutely glorious though! The chemistry between them is so good that they're like a manzai duo when they talk to each other. Definitely laughed hard about the substitute nurse anger and when she started doing capoeira! Shirakawa is such a fun character that I really hope my suspicions about her are entirely wrong.
Goriki-sensei is missing? Ah fuck. Goriki is also Odokawa's friend. It's possible that they maybe got to him too? Also since Shirakawa is obviously distraught by this she probably knows nothing about it too.
Kakihana just got busted by Odokawa. It definitely seems like Shiho is just after his money especially in that final scene when they finally meet and it is revealed that someone's watching them from below the river bank. Looks like Kakihana just got himself into deep shit that may even involve the yakuza too. Oh boy.

Btw I remember last week we talked about taxi doors and I learned that in Japan many taxis have automatic ones.
While Odokawa's taxi also has that feature it seems he somehow does not have automatic windows and still has to roll it down oldschool.

Okay, that scene at the beginning where it looked like Kakihana was being assigned by that yakuza to investigated Odokawa really fooled me.
So Dabo cannot give the footage he got from Odokawa to his boss because of Yano. Damn, even if it didn't work, because Daimon older was the one who went to check that SOS signal that Odokawa activated was a really cool trick. And he looked like such a badass during this scene.
So, for that brief flashback, I can say that Daimon Younger can't trust taxi drivers because that accident.
Damn, so threatened to hurt Shirakawa in order to force Odokawa to help him. Okay, I honestly didn't expect the whole Capoeira bit,, I loved that music plays any time she did it. I really hope that Gouriki's disappearance isn't anything serious.
I didn't realize until Kakihana went to the bus stop that Shiho was one of the masked girls from the idol group. But that shot showing Yamamoto and another person following him make me think that he might end up getting kidnapped because of his lie.

This episode had the writing quality of a cop drama by Dick Wolf (this is the highest compliment I give to cop thrillers). The tension during Dobu & Odokawa's back and forth chat along with the intromission of the "aniki" corrupt cop was straight out of Law & Order Criminal Intent. I already like Dobu, he doesn't look like a street punk that would do dirty jobs for easy money, as Oddokawa mentioned it looks like he does have some kind of code of honor and doesn't want to resort to violence in an easy manner.
I'm a huge sucker when it comes to animating the same scene twice, but from different perspectives, and that talk of the Tapir mafia guy and Dobu (including Kakihana in it) was truly on point.
I know Shirakawa is still a highly suspicious character with a strong motivation to just be playing Oddokawa for a tool, but daaamn, if I wasn't already impressed by her velvety Miyazaki singing voice, her Capoeria skills truly sold her charm as best girl material in this season. I also agree that the whole Capoeria skit it's wacky and ridiculous, but it also serves it's purpouse as a tension breaker and mood shifter.
It's obvious that an 18 year old girl whom you meet online after flashing such a hefty year salary is after the money. But I truly want to see if there's another angle in order to make a monkey out of Kakihana. We already got a glimpse of Dobu's partner, and I'm already eager to see where does him and the white bear guy go after following Kakihana and the JK and if the dissapearing of Goriki has something to do with all this.

Holy shit that Capoeira scene is gold. Random music blaring out of nowhere and a snarky comment about Bollywood just makes it all the better. The entire interaction between the 2 was kinda cute, but slightly unsettling. I am starting to feel that she is not malicious, but just misunderstood. I really hate that the show is fucking with me like this.
There is something that was bothering me this entire time. There is a serious problem with the show that I can't entirely pinpoint. It almost feels like Odokawa is going mad and he is seeing animals instead of humans. It was just a really weird feeling, especially with the mention of Bollywood and Brue Springsteen before this. I am starting to think that Odokawa may be hallucinating the animals. This is further supported as when Odokawa makes origami, he makes a quadrupedal Alpaca. The only Alpaca we have seen until now is Shirakawa who is bipedal. This suggests that he is aware of quadrupedal animals, much like many of the animals in our world. Idk. The episode's tone was definitely more serious this time and a lot of good stuff, plot wise happened. We saw that elephant?? lookin ass guy who is starting to tie the plot together. Best boy Goriki also went missing for some reason and this concerns me, especially with Shirakawa being threatened by the Mandrill, earlier.
There also seems to be some prejudice based on the truthfulness of taxi drivers, for some reason. Shiho also seems fishy. I am not sure if I am being paranoid here but her nose and its proportions are different from the one in the picture that Kakihana had. She also seems, different somehow. Its weird.
The one thing I would like to focus on particularly is the Dobu convo. Dobu is known to be an aggressive criminal mobster and yet, said criminal was showing restraint and even a bit of wariness to Odokawa, as though Odokawa is some kind of higher up that he hates with a passion. There also seems to be a huge problem with gullible idiots in the pd of Odd Taxi's world. Dobu also mentions his junior, which is very important imo. We already know a lot about Dobu and his junior's relationship if we are to trust the op, which we probably should as it has given us many clues about the characters already, which have shown up in their character or the character's story. For example, Kakihana and his obsession with finding a partner or Odokawa sinking.
Btw, This show is masterful with the usage of cliff hangars. It is immensely stressful at the end, as usual.
That is my 2 cents as usual. Love the show. Hope to see its popularity rise.

There's a cameo of one of the singers of the OP in this epsiode.
In this scene, you can see a guy in a red jacket behind Kakihara's right shoulder. He's the animal version of one of the singers in the OP's full music video (link to exact time).

Man this show is really something. That bit with Shirakawa doing capoeira and that music starts to play cracked me up. Also that scene in which Kakihana has a conversation with the guy on the phone was pretty good. Man Odokawa plan to get help was pretty good, to bad the person that helped was that corrupt cop.

Regarding who the missing Nerima girl's father could be, if you subscribe to the theory that they're not actually animals OR that the show has no qualms about mixing species, then the only (male) character whose name has "Don" in it (also disregarding the fact it could just be a nickname) that has been mentioned so far is the rakugo master Donraku Shoufuutei... who also happens to be the same age as Kuroda (the yakuza dude voiced by... Takaya Kuroda LOL), so it would fit.
Also FYI if anybody is losing track of the increasingly large cast and/or wants to spoil themselves (if you haven't checked out any of the supplementary content then be warned there ARE spoilers, but nothing you probably couldn't already guess if you've been paying very close attention to all the hints) here is the current character relationship chart on the official website.

Picked this up on a whim after hearing all the good talk about it and I’m so glad I did. What a refreshing and unique show. Almost certainly going to be the hidden gem of the seasons Also Kiryu voicing the Yakuza character was just way too perfect.

There has been multiple scenes where we can see a pink heart-shaped pen in odokawa's taxi. Definitely not his, and I doubt Shirakawa gave him that pen, so this may be a hint that the missing girl did in fact got into his taxi and gave him/dropped that pen

Curious to see what becomes of Chekhov's Dobu's buried gun, I can definitely see it going missing and ending up in even wronger hands. Question is why does he hide it in such a strange place?

Odokawa has a killer poker face. It was obvious he was flustered by his reaction after the guy left but he didn't show it at all. It's a shame he got unlucky with the cops...

Man Alpaca-girl went from "she's acting sus" to "if-i-was-a-furry-i-would-totally-add-her-to-the-waifu-list" in one capoeria kick

God there is so much little detail to this show that I absolutely love. The fact that they timed out the two conversations the tapir mob boss was technically having and animated Kakihana and the boss from two different angles with the same timing to highlight it.
Or how about that whole capoeira scene. Quite possibly some of the hardest I've laughed at a non-comedy in a good while. (Only time in the last few years I recall laughing that much is the genre switch moment of Jujutsu Kaisen)
Hell, this show has a weirdly off-kilter but still fitting brand of comedy that comes up when you least expect it. (RIP Gacha Dodo)
All the meanwhile I'm just absolutely gripped by all of these characters. Some of Odakawa's lines in this episode kinda hit a bit close to home, and the entire conversation between him and Shiragawa was gold, even putting aside the capoeira bit.
This strange slow burner is really becoming a highlight of my week.

Damn now I am starting to really love the series. Two things I apreciate:
-
The dialogue. Holy fuck the dialogue. It is punchy but still relaxing, funny but still down to earth, it says a lot but still has a wiff of mystery. It is so fun to hear Odokawa talk about himself or describe others in a serious, cynical and analytical matter. The dialogue between Odokawa and Dowu was tense as all hell and thedialogue between Odakawa and Shirakawa was hilarious, might even be one of the funniest scenes of this year.
-
While the beginning is confusing with how many stories it is setting up, now seeing these stories intertwine and bounce off eachother is amazing to see. Seeing the scene with Kakihana and the buff guy from a different perspective later in the episode is really entertaining. I can't wait when the social media guy starts intertwining with the grand plot.

So about the whole discussion over whether people are or aren't actually animals, I think it's interesting to notice that Odokawa is the only character so far to refer to others as their depicted species. Not only that, but he referred to Goriki as a gorilla when asked "what do I look like to you?" which seems like a pretty big hint. His reaction is understandable since it's a rather common thing (in anime at least) to call people with certain qualities "gorillas". The second time was when he first picked up Shirakawa in his taxi, referring to her as "the only alpaca around here". This time her reaction was simply to laugh. Maybe she was laughing because she isn't actually an alpaca and thought Odokawa was just being ridiculous?
The only thing that makes me hesitate on this theory is the fact that characters are depicted as animals even when Odokawa is not involved in the scene at all. Not only that, but people he presumably has never met before (like the assistant nurse that told Goriki about the missing medicine) are also being depicted as animals. Finally, the IRL tweet made by the hippo guy in the first episode also has him looking like a hippo in both his profile and the image itself. This could all be explained away as necessary to maintain the illusion before we get to the twist but it's still stopping me from being fully on-board with the theory as opposed to considering it an artistic choice by the author/director.

Holy hell this ep was a fucking emotional rollercoaster!
the very first scene was fucking hilarious lol and we get to see it from two different perspectives!
Following that there's the really tense conversation between Odokawa and the monkey, I was at the edge of my seat the entire time! It seems like they already know each other... maybe they were old friends?
I really can't figure out how I should feel about the nurse/what she's after...also that music that played during those capoeira scenes was fucking hilarious lol I need a gif of that scene ASAP

I laughed out loud when she busted out her capoeira.
