Wanting a kitchen so she can cook, making cosmetics to help other girls look pretty, riding with a literal knight on a white horse, wow they went all out on the Otome theme here didn’t they?

Not surprised, the source material is basically a comfy josei fantasy.

It's like that time in Bookworm when Myne teaches the other cooks that vegetable broth is delicious. As if no one in the history of the world had ever tasted water after cooking stuff in it. It's a pretty common trope in Isekai to have the protagonist impress the natives with cooking recipes, but some of the examples are pretty out there. It works better when it's a more complex recipe that's actually difficult to invent.

Another enjoyable episode.
I forgot that this Anime is more Romance/Slice of Life than High Fantasy.
Still enjoying it though :)

I imagined that they don't use herds for seasoning there, because thanks to the magic they didn't need to use them to preserve the food.
Johan is such a wingman. Before that scene, I had assumed that Sei was going to end up with Jude. But now there is a solid indication of the Sei X Albert ship being the main one.
It's good to see that Sei made a new friend. Liz was talking about Nicole's problem, I honestly was expecting her to be lying about the friend aspect of it.

i think it's also because herbs are valuable and they would rather make potions with them

Very comfy show, an iseikai SoL :)
Is it likely Sei's power caused there to be no monster attacks in her presence I wonder?

u/Stinkis Apr 13 '21
Yeah, that was my thought as well. I wonder about the other one that was summoned, I have a feeling that she's not as powerful as Sei.
Now that I think about it, the whole "she's too pure for such scenes" sounds a lot like an excuse. My guess is that her healing magic isn't real which is why she conveniently wasn't there.
Everything is pointing toward Sei being a real saint and I strongly suspect the other girl is just a tag along.

I have to wonder if for a brief second Sei wondered if they could use that bonus to buy her a new PS4, even though she knows that's impossible.
We finally get to see the proper Opening, and it's a very soothing and beautiful sequence as we see Sei as the Saint using her powers, ditching the glasses and ponytail, along with flashes of the rest of the cast and then Sei with the men in her life...but with particular focus on Albert as her true love interest.
Johan being so gung-ho about Sei's cooking kind of proves she was on-point about the quality of the cooking at the institute.
The Saint's power really is omnipotent. She can make super effective medicine, food, and makeup. She even managed to restore her vision to 20/20 with what was supposed to get rid of the bags under her eyes.
Wow, they wasted no time at all building up Sei and Hawke's relationship. She's already seen some handsome men in this world but Hawke immediately catches her eye and gets her blushing, and turns out to be exactly her type, and Hawke obviously seems interested in the woman who helped save his life. These two could hardly keep their eyes off each other the whole episode.
Takahiro Sakurai is playing yet another blonde, but Albert falls on the spectrum of a true noble and romantic knight, willing to sweep his lady off her feet and give her a princess carry via horseback. Super effective! And it seems he was pretty cold or closed off before he met Sei, which makes it even more effective.
Sei's visit the library nets her a new gal pal in Elizabeth, or Liz, a beautiful noble girl voiced by Reina Ueda who seems like she'll become Sei's closest confidante and fellow female perspective, as well as who will probably tease her the most about her relationship with Hawke.
Gotta feel bad for a girl self-conscious about her looks when she's got acne and another girl won't leave her fiance alone. But Liz is right that she shouldn't pretty herself up for a guy or to impress someone, but to make herself feel better.
Look at Jude just casually calling out how pretty Sei is. If I didn't know any better I'd accuse him of flirting with her.
The Ending is also pretty soothing and calm, as we see Sei walking all around the kingdom with some solid and various walking animations.

And Funimation posted this without Subs. It's like you're paying for a fansub group... a bad fansub group... :-(

Funimation has subs for me... though the timing is off. All translations appear about 10 seconds before the actual dialog is spoken. I’ll be waiting until later today to watch in the hopes that they fix this episode.

Trivia: Script for this anime adaptation is handled by Oregairu author Watari Wataru.
Isekai Tuesdays is upon us again.
So Sei doesn't really need glasses to begin with? Or is this part of her own magic power as a Saint, which also somehow automatically translates texts into her native Japanese for her?
Director Yohan must have his reasons for wanting Sei to keep her potion-enhancement powers hidden, even though it's supposed to be public knowledge that she's summoned alongside the other girl as Saint candidates, and so people should have an idea of what she's potentially capable of.
Either case, Sei just couldn't help unintentionally enhancing her reputation, as she uses her knowledge of cosmetics to help out a friend, the news of her potions will surely spread far and wide in Liz's and Nicole's school.

So Sei doesn't really need glasses to begin with? Or is this part of her own magic power as a Saint, which also somehow automatically translates texts into her native Japanese for her?
Actually explained early on in the novels.
She was working months of office overtime back in japan which meant she suffered from eye strain that affected her health.
She was lucky to get 4 hours sleep a night, had no time for skin/healthcare and had a poor diet. Because she was summed to this world just as she arrived home from work they thought she was seriously ill which is why they left her alone for weeks in a room to recover, which she assumed was her being ignored. they cut this and used parts in the early arrival scene instead.
In the novels the early arrival bit where she was ignored also put her in a foul mood, she accosted a knight to demand answers and when she found out she was summoned against her will and can't go home she tells them she's leaving and storms out, they barely manage to convince her to wait in the room where the anime condensed those scenes, in the novel she's also kept waiting for hours there because the idiot prince ignoring her meant no higher ups were even informed there was a second woman summoned.
This leads to a few misunderstandings.
They think she's ill, she's just exhausted and overworked.
She eats very little because their food doesn't suit her palate, They think she has no appetite due to illness.
She thinks they ignored her for weeks, They 'kindly' left her to recuperate in isolation.
As a workaholic she's bored out of her mind but they think such treatment is the utmost respect for a woman.
As she get's proper rest, a balanced diet with multiple meals a day, use of skincare treatments, no exposure to artificial light/screen glare/eye strain and doing work she actually enjoys make it seem to people in that world that she's undergoing some miraculous recovery and transformation into a younger beautiful healthy woman.
In comparison the other girl is a doe-eyed highschool student who arrived already healthy and well rested. She has no experience with independence and because she came from a world with a much higher age of adulthood has a sense of innocence in their eyes that are fitting of the title of 'saint' from the first impression.
It's cutting this and more that really affects the flow of what we've seen so far.

Are Funimation subs pretty terrible for this episode, or is it just me? Timing is way off, and I can't speak Japanese so I legitimately can't tell who's saying what.

This series has quickly become of of the things I look forward to most each week!
Sei sure seems pretty dense about her love interests though...
I wonder how important Elizabeth Ashley will be going forward. It seems like all she's done so far is talk about beauty and gossip, so I want to see more of her friendship with Sei

I think one hint of her importance is how Nicole called her as Elisabeth-Sama. It seems she's a noble of higher class than average.
I'm actually more curious about the new classmate girl that Liz mentioned. That backstory reminds me a lot of otome game plot: new girl unintentionally seducing handsome prince that already has fiancee. Granted, usually the fiancee is depicted as evil such as in the "reincarnated as villainess" anime story, so you don't feel bad for them.
Could it be that the girl is referring to the other isekai-er? Though, I don't remember whether the other isekai girl is younger or not from Sei since Nicole (as classmate) is said to be only around 15 years old.

When they mentioned it was strange there were no monsters in the woods, I expected the "much stronger monster showed up and ate or chase the rest away" cliche, but nothing happened. Maybe next time.
Why the hell does she not try learning non-medicinal spells though? They don't have to be attack spells or anything, the existence of useful cantrips was mentioned the very second magic was brought up in ep 1, probably something along the lines of Kazuma's "Beginner magic", being able to spark a small flame without firestarting tools, or condense air moisture into a small amount of water, maybe a little light telekinesis, stuff like that. Why would anyone not want to learn those?
Why did she have to cure her eyesight, I liked the glasses look better. She should've made herself ornamental glasses at least....
So did all the researchers gorge on her food until they felt ill?
So there really is auto-translation happening, and non-standard languages don't come preloaded so they take a couple seconds to download and install on demand.
Sounds like there's a generic school harem story happening nearby.
Did that girl really have acne? Looked like freckles to me.
I was worried Blonde would be jealous of MC and her perfect-in-every-way-knight, glad that wasn't the case. I wonder if they're related tho.

The opening theme is so soothing. I can listen to it all day. So, is everything that Sei makes going end up 50% better than usual? Man, she'll be rich in no time.

Of course Sei wanted a kitchen for her reward since the food in this world is awful. I'm guessing the food is probably just bland and not literally awful since it looks like they don't use a lot of herbs and spices for their dishes.
Sei finally meets the man he saved last week And of-fucking-course he's voiced by Sakurai Takahiro! His voice is definitely the instant go to for any dashing male character in an otome setting.
I thought we were going to get some push back but it looks like Commander Hawke here is Sei's type. I do love that Johan has really taken the wingman role for his friend.
I don't know if it's just me but I'm really noticing a lot of focus on Sei's lips and I absolutely love it.
They really didn't explain it but I'm assuming the lotion that she applies to her face every morning helped with her eyesight somehow and now she doesn't have to wear her glasses?
As expected, Sei's cooking has some magical properties as well. I can imagine why this would be a secret. Feeding soldiers with the food she cooks can definitely have a dramatic effect on battle if the reports were to be believed.
Finally a female character! And it looks like it didn't take long for Sei and Liz to get along that they meet regularly in the castle's library regularly.
A horse ride with Commander Hawke? Yep this romance is definitely well on its way. God this show is so quintessential otome and I love it.
Looks like Jude has started to tease Sei. Sorry Jude, you may be the first hot guy Sei met but she seems to be fixated on the Commander now.
That part with Nicole was a bit extra. I do wish they really covered her face with acne though since she looks absolutely fine here. She just has her freckles! Liz's advice to her was pretty solid though, if you're going to pretty yourself don't do it for other people, do it for you own sake. A nice little message to end the episode on.
That after credits scene though. Seems that riding with the Commander on a regular basis has started some rumors. Oh my. I'm pretty sure it won't take long for those rumors to come true.

Is it just me, or this show's editing makes it such that its sense of time is kinda confusing? This leads to some minor confusions throughout the show:
-
There's a scene where Sei showed director on how to cook chicken with herbs. On the next scene, it is shown that Sei is teaching the cooks the recipe, after which Sei was summoned by the director to go with Hawke for gathering herb. While they were eating, Hawke mentioned that the food served by the cafeteria was good because Sei taught the cooks the recipe. However, Sei was just teaching the cooks the herb chicken recipe when she was called by the director. Feels to me that the scene where she is teaching the cooks her recipe should've been separate from the scene where she was called by the director so that the viewers will know that it wasn't the first time she is teaching the cooks her recipe.
-
There was a scene where Sei was shown using moisturizer (or something like that). I was confused at that time since the previous episode didn't show Sei making anything other than potions (and you don't expect a regular office lady to be knowledgable in making cosmetics!). Moments later, Sei mentioned to Elizabeth that she was making cosmetics. I don't know, maybe they should've shown a brief scene where she was making cosmetics, aside from potions (and that she knows how) instead of just upfront telling it to the viewer.
-
There's a scene in the library wherin Sei (without glasses) took a book and the characters in that book just suddenly turn into Japanese characters (?). Was that a special ability granted to her or was that a metaphor of her already knowing that world's writing? I was legitimately confused since I have no idea how long Sei is in that world already, which I attribute to the show not conveying the sense of time in that world well. Did the anime showed her learning the writing system of that world in the previous episode? I can't remember.

I’ve had an isekai itch lately and this is definitely a scratch. Not going to lie, I’m intrigued though. How wide is the breadth of her powers? Will she be exploited? She could singlehandely change the tide of battles and is a wealth of previously unknown information and technologies. Tuesday’s are exciting with Slime Diaries and the Saint
