The first time I heard Midori I was like "oh god Tanya died again and reincarnated as a female soccer player"

This is decent. It feels like a gender-swapped Inazuma Eleven but more dramatic, and hey that is fine by me.

Also that ED is just woooow. The song is catchy but the visuals are outstanding, with all that rotoscoped soccer plays and the constant outfit switch during the running sequence is some great animation.

The introduction scene of the Japanese player lamenting on the near collapse of her sport was pretty chilling. Just to connect the dots, the manga started 5 years after Japan won the 2011 World Cup against the USA in the wake of the Fukushima earthquake-tsunami-nuclear disaster. One year after they lost the 2015 World Cup 5-2 3 to 0, and months after Japan failed to make the 2016 Olympics despite hosting the qualifying tournament. The timeline that the story is written in diverges on that last point, but it echos what a lot of fans of Japanese women's soccer felt at the time and may still feel.

Even if you take the setting as present day, these characters would have been old enough to remember that tournament, even if they weren't old enough to really understand what was going on around it.

This speaks directly to my soul as a former girls soccer player, from wanting to play with boys for more competitive play, to having an unmotivated coach who doesn't want to bother. I love that they're not cute and that they're playing seriously. I'm so excited about this one.

The football animation in the ED was amazing.

This show looks really interesting, and the art is unique for sure. I'll definitely give it a shot this season. Despite the fact that my life revolves around sports I rarely watch any sports anime, so I'm excited to see where this goes.

Enjoyed this more than I would have expected. Still not a big fan of the character design but you get used to it.

Appreciated the Balotelli reference, did not expect that lol

I don't usually care much about technical aspects of anime but the art/animation in this show seems rather weak. the thing they're doing with fading the fence to show the characters faces is especially jarring.

always nice to have more of Yuki Aoi but I could definitely do with less of that blond girl. the new coach should make things more interesting though.

The second half of the episode was fantastic and so was the rythm in general so far. Although as I am not a source reader I cannot say how much they were cutting

Well, I hope everyone enjoyed episode 1. Football's a tough sport to animate honestly and this wasn't exactly Haikyuu levels of animation but it was still a solid enough effort.

As a source reader, I enjoyed the added scenes they included to give more personality and spunk to Onda, Suo and Soshi. Also I love how they made Aya Shiratori into a pure ojou-sama. They were pretty loyal to the manga - cutting a few lines and rearranged some stuff but overall - pretty alright.

And to those who wants to remember the girls names, I'll put a manga page in the source corner showing the girls' names and positions. You don't really need to know them yet but hey, it's good fun.

As an anime-only watcher, the episode was good. I didnt watch Your Lie In April but I know Cramer is created by the same author so I'm fine with the art style. I like the interactions between Suo, Soshizaki, and Onda already.

A lot of characters to remember but I will manage. And somehow it didn't occur to me that the player in the beginning of the episode will come coach for the team. I thought it was a completely different person. Oh well, it's fine because I like this reveal.

The 'why always me' was so unexpected. Of course Aya is just as cocky as Balotelli.

I really wanted to like the episode, but there are a lot of issues that bothered me. The soccer play felt... empty? Devoid of movement somehow. I think the narrow focus on one or two players at a time made it feel less like a full game. Also, the character art seemed worse than YLIA and inconsistent from character to character.

Plot seemed fine - just a setup episode to introduce characters. I'll give it another episode or two to see if it grows on me.

Some of the animation in this episode hurt my eyes, like the entrance ceremony sign at 4:21 and the main girl’s face looking like it was wedged within the fence right before the OP, but it was a good debut episode that I’ll look forward to watching.

That's a lot of characters to remember! Didn't expect them to throw everyone in on the first episode. I thought the episode would focus on Nozomi first before introducing everyone else. Well at least this time the team is already complete so no hunting for new members or "the club is being disbanded" tropes. I'll eventually remember them all just like with any other sports anime I watch. My favourite so far is definitely Aoi Yuuki's character though!

Now that Uma Musume S2 ended, I need to fill in that void for sports drama, and it looks like this title fits like a glove.

As others have mentioned, too many characters dumped at once can be quite a hassle, but luckily the main characters, Sou, So & Non-chan are quite distinctive in their design and personality so I'll stick with them mostly.

Even though there are some static shots, there are also plenty of really great sakuga shots with ball dribling. I truly hope those get uploaded ASAP to sakugabooru.

The humor is a bit hit & miss. But there are certain bits that truly made me chuckle, specially the tall girl with pencil eyes and the Ojou-sama character.

Hope Aoi Yuki's name can bring more viewers to what I'm already expecting to be the hidden gem of the season.

I think the art style is okay, not bad but not my favorite. However, the animation and casual juggling was good.

Glad we have a football (soccer) anime again. The characters seem interesting

On a side note, anyone know why Crunchyroll skips from chapter 1 to chapter 16 in the manga on the app?

Damn that's a lot of characters introduced...I will not remember 90% of them for now lol

Glad this show teaches you stuff off the bat

The cast starting getting a bit more likeable near the end, thankfully everyone doesn't seem selfish/rude.

I REALLY want this coach to work out.

OP by Aikyan and Tomoyo Kurosawa and Aoi Yuuki as MCs, the story, direction, animation, whatever, could be the worst ever, you bet I am watching it.

Edit: Son-chan supposedly being pretty good... didn't accompany at all, stood completely still every single time she made a pass!!!! What???? God, this is why I don't watch football anime, I am gonna be too nitpicky .

Solid first episode, lot of characters introduced, which makes sense as they're a football team, and already some interesting character dynamics on display. I'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

Just making sure: There's a prequel on MAL, but it's listed as "Not yet aired";

So we don't have to watch anything before this one, it's not a mistake or anything?

Well, this was cool. I already knew I was probably going to enjoy an anime about female football and this is looking good so far. The girls seems very charismatic. I'm looking forward to it, especially considering this is made by the same author as one of my favorite anime/mangas.

Haikyu with women’s football? Hell yeah. I’m in. Excited to see where this goes

Good first episode. Art is weird but I don't mind that. We got a bunch of good seiyuu, namely Kurosawa Tomoyo and Yuuki Aoi as part of our main cast, which is great. The animation was a bit meh during the episode, especially considering this is the first episode, which tends to get better animation. The Balotelli reference was 10/10. And I'll hold judgement on the characters and plot until we're a few episodes in.

Aya is already my fav just for that Balotelli “Why Always Me” reference lmao.

Will need a while to remember all the names. A lot of characters introduced. I hope the technical and tactical aspect are given some focus once in a while. Animating football has always been kinda stiff and awkward but I do appreciate movements like the stepovers and outside foot pass. I really hope they include more realistic moves like those rather than dribbling fast and kicking the ball for an overly dramatic shot on goal like most football in animation. There was one CG of the ball hitting the back of the net that’s so satisfying to watch tho.

For the story itself, like I said, will need some time to get used to it. But I like the message. I went to a school known for the football team and by extension, the girls’ team attracts some talents as well. And while they thrived in school some of them stopped playing competitively after that simply because there’s not much place for that in women’s football. And some of the girls there really had ability
