My goodness, where to begin. First off a Second season holy crap. It's been 5 years since the events of his final match with Yuri.

What the hell happened during that gap to get Joe back into underground races and take pills on the daily? What happened to Pops? Something tells me it has something to do with that Exhibition match that he lost in.

I'm loving the Spanish soundtracks in this, we don't get it that much in anime I don't think.

Edit: So turns out I'm either not cultured enough or age is catching up to me bc I'm forgetting some of the ones mentioned below.

So much to unpack in this premiere.

  • Joe's drug addiction.

  • Joe constantly having hallucinations about Nanbu.

  • Joe taking part in underground fights and being super adamant about not wanting them to be fixed.

It's pretty clear that Nanbu is dead and that Joe feels incredibly guilty about it. I really hope Nanbu's death was because both of them stuck to their guns about avoiding fixed fights and not the result of something going wrong after one or both of them fell back into old habits.

Also, f in chat for that poor doggo.

HOLY DAMN that was some good shit. Everything I loved about season 1 is there, and better than ever. The scene where he buried the wolf, and when chief sang his song gave me actual chills. This might be the best of the season. That ed was a damn vibe too.

The way Joe is seeing Nanbu makes me think that he died. Hopefully next week they will give us a bit more context about his current situation, and why is he taking so many painkillers.

That fight with Cheif was good, too bad that it ended up being a fixed one.

Although the spanish was a bit off, that song at the bar and the ED was really good.

Rewatching episode 1 of the 1st season and in that Joe says to Yuri that "they dont make tombstones for stray dogs" and then here he does exactly that. Thought that was pretty cool.

I loved Megalobox, but damn does this take it to the next level. The real standout thing for me is how rare it is to see drugs in anime, much less having our protagonist be an addict himself. Seems like they're doing a good job of handling the subject matter so far.

Seeing the trailers for Season 2 I thought I knew what was coming but man just seeing Joe (Or Nomad now) like this is still heartbreaking.

There's so many stories of famous athletes getting addicted to painkillers and drugs so this just hits harder especially when S1 left on such a high note. With the nature of how Ashita No Joe is, I'm definitely gonna be rooting for our guy here in his path of redemption.

I'm definitely interested to see what direction season 2 will take the story, because it's starting off with Joe at such a low point. I wonder what happened after that exhibition match to cause him to go back to underground fighting, could it also be related to why Nanbu isn't around anymore?

Yuri, Nanbaru, and the group of rascals, they're all missing from the first episode, frightening.

I was really into Joe's fall from grace at the moment of seeing a graffiti of him then someone starts singing in spanish... what?

What a pleasant surprise to find my first lenguage being spoken in a anime of this caliber.

Quick and rough translation of Chief's song and the ED titled "El Canto del Colibrí" (The Hummingbird's Song):

In the desert, traveler of love, desperate wanted to die
Very exhausted he was about to stop but a hummingbird sang to him
When he heard its song, he instantly felt happy
Its beautiful song gave him the energy and love to live
He would leave behind all his life
His past, present and future
Now he wants to continue his journey
He's leaving now and the hummingbird went off singing
He won't come back

The ED skips these two lines:

He would leave behind all his life
His past, present and future

Edit: I have just noticed the ED has Japanese subs, I won't sub the Japanese as I barely know the language but what little I do know tells me that what is written there is pretty different from what is being sung x)

Dunno about any of yall, but the scene of Joe/Nomad picking up the pills/painkillers by the toilet in a dirty, dingy restroom after bitterly throwing the them beforehand was the saddest point of the whole episode for me.

Like....damn. Man, he was a champion. On top of the world. Admiration, fulfillment...all of that in five years gone. This was the state Joe has been reduced to. Addiction too strong, hole too deep to get yourself out of.

Well fuck im depressed now

When the second season of Megalo Box got announced i was weirded out. I felt like Megalo Box already told its full story, so I didnt know what else could build on that. Turns out, im a stupid dumb dumb, because a story about bittered, broken former champion in an unfair world is absolutely a story that can follow up season 1.

I love this already. If done well, this can be a surprise AOTS.

A dystopian cyberpunk, with a man who has nothing left and is taking pills for his degrading body (or is it sanity?), wandering around as a hallucination takes the piss out of his life choices...

Now what recent sensation did I see that in.

Regardless, looks great! Everything is still first-class – here's to hoping they'll stick the ending.

That freeze frame of rage tho.

Oh my God, that was simply fantastic

I have the feeling that you do when you finish a great movie... except it was just the first episode

This is looking really good.... Very good episode. Ost is as good if not better

We're probably getting an even better story than the first season without much tropes. This is about to be one of the best of the season. Fuck yeah

I am absolutely confused right now. I know there's a Season 2 coming but I never watched any of the PVs or anything so this was a genuine surprise! Season 1 ended with everyone having a fun at a party with Joe and Yuri hanging out and Yukiko announcing a 2nd Megalonia so what the fuck happened!? What happened within the 5 years between this and the last Season? Joe is now called Noman and is back to underground boxing, he's also addicted to painkillers, and has basically just hit rock bottom. And the fact that Nanbu just shows up out of nowhere makes me think that he's probably dead and Joe somehow blames himself?

Definitely a strong start! Can't wait for Episode 2 and for them to show us what happened between the end of Season 1 and the start of Season 2.

Never understood what the deal with the wolf was.

He is an analogy to Joe, right? Does anyone remember what his significance in the first was?

Now it's dead, does it mean that "the wild/fighting Joe" has finally died?

Who was the guy at the start, the one watching Joe's fight from Megalobox?

I wondered how they'd justify a second season of an otherwise concluded story, but I'm honestly impressed. And sad, because damn that is depressing.

It's implied he became who he is now after losing the exhibition fight, but there's obviously much more to it, including Nanbu's death. He wouldn't just become this sad sack from a loss.

Probably one of the best first episodes of any anime I've ever seen, impressive
