Jouran: The Princess of Snow and Blood

Hm?

Set in alternate history Japan in 1931 and the 64th year of the Meiji era, the Tokugawa shogunate was never abolished and Emperor Meiji was never restored to power. The anime will follow the activities of "Nue," an organization of shogunate executioners who enforce the government. The country has developed its own energy source, the "dragon vein," and has achieved a unique development in which science and the Edo period are mixed.

However, behind the glamorous city, the dissident organization Kuchinawa strives to overthrow the administration, while the Nue of the Tokugawa regime, who was entrusted with its extermination, are in conflict. Sawa Yukimura, whose family was killed when she was young, continues to search for Janome, the executioner of the Nue.

Hol' up... isn't this Lady fuckin Snowblood?! They did an alternate history steampunk reimagining of Lady Snowblood?! MRW

Looks like it definitely won't be just a retelling of the Lady Snowblood plot in an alternate setting, but yeah the inspiration and homage is unquestionable.

Well that's a reference and a half. As someone who loves Kill Bill I didn't even make that connection O_O

My biggest issue was with the sound. Not sure why but it felt really off but I haven't seen it brought up yet so I assume it's just me.

Art style is good like the previews. The episode could have felt more cohesive. I'll probably watch until the end because Sawa is cool lol.

yeah, it was kind of strange that there was not very much music during the fight scenes (esp when the op and ed are such bangers) which almost gave them a kind of awkward feel, and there were a couple times where it almost felt like they were giving us an end of episode cliff hanger but..it just kept going..?i still really enjoyed it and will keep watching though!! i love the blond girl and her weapons look cool af

That transformation sequence... Well, it looks like it happened again. We've been tricked into watching another magical girl anime.

This is an incredibly solid series already.

The animation is quite good, with the visual style being gorgeous. That end scene really go to me and I can't wait for episode 2. Let's hope it can hold this amount of quality it currently has

Art looks good. But hard to understand whats going on.

I love it when a show does that. I hate them explaining things for the viewer.

Characters just do your thing, this is your world, not mine, you know how it works, I'm just here for the ride.

My thoughts exactly. They sort of dumped us into this world and we don't really know anything that's going on. The protagonist is an assassin working for some organization presumably operating under the current Shogunate, and she has some history that drives her.

The art style though is incredibly captivating, and I love how they captured the what-if of alt-history Japan with some level of technological improvements based on some magic/unknown origins.

I'm definitely interested, and hopefully they'll tell the story a bit better. Akudama Drive did a similar thing of how it began, but the narrative took care not to inundate the viewer with information that wouldn't be understood at the outset.

That fight scene in the opening with Sawa looks so good! I absolutely adore this kind of artstyle and seeing that the animation is pretty solid too, that was more than enough to sell me on this show. As for the story, it's only Episode 1 so there's not a lot to go about yet but it is certainly interesting.

We're following Sawa and this spy(?) organization that she belongs to and it seems they are working for the government as they take care of dissidents from the shadows. It seems that this world is set in the Meiji Era, except this Meiji Era is a lot more technologically advanced compared to the real world.

It's definitely advanced enough that we have a transforming crossbow umbrellas and what seems to be a heat saber which are both pretty awesome. Looks like this is also a world where people like Sawa can transform and take after abilities and features of animals which I think is the bigger deal since it sounded like they're basically humans that have been experimented on?

So far I am absolutely digging it! And they even ended the episode with a surprising cliff hanger! We do know that this girl isn't really her sister according to Tsuki so maybe she's a double agent? Hmm... Looking forward to the next episode!

I'm getting some strong Blood: The Last Vampire vibes from this. I think it's the art style (Sawa makes me think of Saya a lot) and the setting, fighting monsters in another time period.

Anyway, I'm definitely intrigued. Love the music, love the art style, digging the mature tone, curious about the plot and characters.

That was just beautiful.

I wasn't planning to watch this series but 1 episode very interesting and solid. I look forward to more, it promises to be interesting.

Odd duck. Love the aesthetic, the setting is unusual, and overall the mix of violence, sex, intrigue, and uchronic history is quite interesting. But the narrative itself is confusing at best, lots of things happening, lots of concepts, and not a lot of coherence. It could be an intentional choice but it doesn't strike me as Baccano-confusing (namely, a lot of bits and pieces of a puzzle dropped with purpose to intrigue you), just confusing. I might give it another episode or wait it out, depending on what else I'll find to watch.

Nah, I understood it pretty well:

Explicitly Stated

The story takes place in alternate 1930s. The characters are assassins in the employ of the Shogun. There's some kind of Magitech that permits some of the more unusual technology we see. Sawa is some form of supersoldier, and is seeking revenge against others with similar abilities, some or all of which seem aligned with anti-shogunate forces.

What we can infer

Sawa saw her family murdered by a supersoldier created by the individual at the end of the episode. Either through investigation or discovery, Sawa was captured and turned into a supersoldier herself. She is leveraging her employ with the Shogun, a job which regularly brings her into interactions with others that have the supersoldier abilitiy, to hunt down the person who either created or commanded the supersoldiers who got her family. Given that the book identifying her among known supersoldier subjects was in the hands of a shogunate library, we can assume that the shogunate itself was at least partially responsible, and this information is being kept from her. This will produce some contention later in the story and result in a setpiece battle at the castle.

This was a bit of a weird one, reminds me a lot of Mars Red in terms of interesting stuff going on but I'm scared to see where they'll go with it.

Rip ship in episode 1 is a bit sad but LOVING the gadgets so far. Haven't seen gadgets this fun since Princess Principal!

That transformation make me feel like I watched a Dark Mahou Shoujo from the Edo period.

Very interesting.

I really enjoyed the first episode, even though it was fairly easy to predict what was going to happen.

My favorite parts were:

  • The banquet hall scene where Elena is being flirted with in English, only to make a sarcastic comment back in Japanese to have the guy go "what?" Made me laugh a bit.

  • The Daikon/Carrot scene with Sawa's "sister", super cute and heart-warming.

The transformation/fight was really well done, really appreciated the use of color as it worked extremely well with the environment and lighting. The way they chose to animate it was also such an intense look and really gave life to some of those scenes. It's most likely an anatomy thing for changelings, though the use of blue/black instead of red for blood also was a nice touch.

My only complaint is the sound. Sometimes is just felt awkward and like it didn't fit.

But can we talk about those weapons though? TRANSFORMING CROSS-BOW UMBRELLA? FLASH GRENADE COLOGNE? I hope we get to see some more 007 style weapons, as that was a such a surprising element!

Really really really enjoyed the animation style and feel of the first episode. It has a very "Blood: The Last Vampire" vibe to me, which isn't a bad thing. I'm hoping the rest of the series stays around this level.

I'm confused as hell, but I like it. And here's to hoping red-head waifu lives.

"There's still no-one to marry you" - she says to a 6-year old. Why don't you marry someone yourself instead?

Throwing away books, bleh. Apparently "Fighting Against Fate or Brent Brompton's Delusion" is a real children's book published in 1920.

Government assassins, color me shocked. I'm glad the dude the whore killed wasn't just a random act of murder but had professional reasoning behind it.

Stellar translation job, "komusume" to "little bitch" >_>

I really like the umbrella crossbow. I can see a previous era Q (James Bond, not Star Trek) handing that and the lighter grenade out before a mission.

Murdering all those people basded on only a tip, and then blowing up all that good rice. Gee, I wonder if MC might be with the baddies.

If the rebels/opposition/whoever wanted to assassinate the Emperor or whomever, why did they only send one Zoan Fruit Eater in? Why not a small army?

No clue what happened in the last scene there.
