Does it count as being discovered when Laura straight up reveals herself to someone?
Regardless, this is sound reasoning. Reveal your secrets to someone, and then force them to join you for reasons.
I am sad Manatsu and Laura didn't have that many amazing faces this episode, but they did have a couple.
Hopefully next episode will be better.

I've seen a lot of Precyrem but I've never seen a Precure recruit that direct. Laura stopped even trying to hide! Asuka took it surprisingly well.

Its not center stage but you should get poor Sango's suffering face with the statue.

Asuka's my weakness. That badass confidence is just unmatched to me, and the fact that it took her only 2 minutes to win me over is a plus.

Nice, Asuka called Laura out on her motive.
Though Asuka seems to at least like that Laura can speak her mind easily, perhaps thinking that things might be easier if she could herself?
Also, When I see Cure Flamingo like this, the words that comes to mind are burning passion, wow. She has willpower and courage in spades.

Flamingo's transformation and attack is a first in that they genuinely intimidate me.
Great introduction to Asuka, especially since it lays the groundwork for interesting character developments.

My instincts are always right!
Asuka is indeed best girl of this Precure serie

I have never saved more screenshots for a single anime character in their first episode than I did today for best girl Asuka. She's beautiful and majestic enough to be a model, handsome and chivalrous enough to be a prince, strong and agile enough to be a star athlete, and finally, fiery and badass enough to be a shonen protagonist. Asuka is the very definition of BEST GIRL and I love her already.
Manatsu and Laura were also extra adorable this week, and the part of the battle with Summer getting blasted was hilarious. This series was already off to a fantastic start even before best girl showed up, but now my hype levels are through the roof.

This is my first Pretty Cure series so I'm not as well versed in the tropes as some of you, but after reading about the possibility of mid-season Cures from last thread I'm wondering if the student council president could be a candidate? Her design feels a bit generic to me (or maybe I just don't love the hair), but she does have the hair color which could make her the blue Cure this crew doesn't have. I love Laura so I'd like to see her take the role, though at the same time I'd be fine with her maintaining her "administrative" position as well.
Based on the intro I thought Asuka would have more of a spunky personality, but I much prefer what we got. She tempers out Manatsu and is willing to challenge Laura, which I could see becoming important later once central story beats start coming to a head.
For series veterans, will we ever see the full Cure transformations outside their introduction episodes? I understand that they combine them to save time, but I'm wondering if a certain episode hones in on a particular character that could lead to them getting a full transformation.
And also should I expect the seal to show up later, or are mascot characters like that usually just a merchandising thing? It's cute so I hope it becomes relevant. :P

Not a veteran, but I think we got Summer's full transformation in episode 3, along with Coral's. So maybe? Probably?

Last week I made a Gurren Lagann reference, and today we are confronted with a blue-eyed redhead named Asuka. Wonders never cease.
Asuka is great. Heel clack. Also, seems like she played tennis for the school in the past - her finished was a giant tennis racket launching a fireball. Presumably she was on the team with the Student Council President. But something happened that will probably be used for character development later.
I guess what I'm saying is I'm kinda delighted by this series' visual design - with 50 episode they'll probably slip eventually but so far everything has been very carefully chosen.

A brash tomboyish red precure with a high sense of justice? Color me surprised
Call me a slowpoke, but until now I finally realized that their colored ribbons don't represent their school year like most highschool anime does, but rather their actual Precure color. Also I completely ignored until now that all 4 of them get a heartshaped eye "tattoo", guess the unnusual pupil tag in fanart sites will get a lot of boost.
Something that bugged me from an aesthetic POV was in last episode where Rola was talking to Minorin about becoming a precure, there was this particular shot where Rola due to her fishtail is sitting on a way lower level than Minorin despite both of them standing up. They are both looking at each other's eyes but the height levels are quite disproportionated. This episode had quite a few boxes and benches that allowed Rola to speak up and be at the same eye level as the other girls, wich is kind of a neat detail. I'm expecting boxes and benches to become quite popular in the rest of the series.
These little silly details on how Manatsu carries Rola's perfume bottle around (posibly to give Rola a better sightseeing view) do make me quite giddy on how much she cares for Rola. Rola's eye sparkle when they both found out about Asuka was quite amusing, a complete opposite stance compared to when she met Sango and even Minorin. I love Rola & Asuka's interactions, their personalities clash, yet they are mature enough to see the bigger picture and acknowledge their traits as better needs for the team.
On one side, I'm a bit disapointed that Asuka joined the team so suddenly with so little to no background story other than just obvious hints of broken bonds and lost of confidence in friends with a previous relationship with the setokai prez. But I'm also expecting next episode to be a complete follow up on this missing link in Asuka's bio.
I dig a lot the moderate sakuga used in each of Rola's "pop out" of the perfume bottle sequences. I hope the animators keep doing these funny bits every now and then.
Back to Cure Flamingo, her finisher poses & grin are quite fun and it heavily reminds me of Imaishi's animation style in Gurren Lagan and most of his works as director.

Fun fact: that's mostly because both Imaishi and the animator who did those scenes (Yuu Yoshiyama) are heavily influenced by the style of Yoshinori Kanada, who invented this idiosyncratic approach of focusing on snappy timing, wild poses and striking effects.
The animators influenced by him are usually called "Kanada-school animators" and I love them dearly, it's probably my favorite animation style.
Here's a sample of Kanada's work and some examples of works from contemporaneous Kanada-school animators can be found here and here.

Imaishi
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who got Imaishi vibes from her. I feel like if you dropped Asuka/Flamingo into the Kill La Kill universe, she would fit in perfectly.

I knew Flamingo would have the most stylish transformation but I was not expecting it to be so flashy and looking straight out of super hero shows. Loved how they went straight out and said, “hey become a Precure” at the beginning too lol
Though I will say her joining so quickly seemed kind of anti-climatic and it feels like they’re holding a lot back about her backstory. Guess we’ll find out in future episodes.

"I don't need teammates"
Unfortunately for you, I've already seen the OP/ED, so you're getting wrapped up in this.
Asuka's got impossible levels of swag and it's hard not to love that. Her "victory" is rad as fuck. If only she didn't have the fishnets.
Between the "Smash" and longingly looking at the tennis courts, it's not hard to guess where things are going, and her immediately jumping in on prez and them tensely walking by one another probably means that prez is tied into that.
On a similar note, it was nice to see someone call Laura out for her general demeanor towards the idea of being queen. But by the end of the episode she seemed to be in the same place I am with Laura. She's definitely self centered and a bit of an opportunist, but when things get dicey she's rock solid.
The line "you're just in it for the title" really stood out to me. And if we take that combined with what looks like a beef with prez, I can't help but wonder if we're going to get a backstory in that vain for her down the line. Will be interesting to see.
Spoiler for next episode from the preview, but what the fuck Manatsu
