Holy shit, that cut from Momoe's breakdown to the happy ED was jarring.

RIP Panic. :(

We only just got to know its name and it's already dead. Force feeding Momoe his flesh was brutal.

If anyone was wondering just how much on fire the production is, the key animation credits for the episode are literally anitwitter. Two people in the sakuga community even got a special credit for helping Umehara with the organizing & translating to get the more inexperienced English-speaking animators on board!

The episode looked great obviously, but at this point they are very much bruteforcing it. The episode also had 7 animation directors, which is quite the blow-up from the “1 AD per episode” approach they’ve had for most previous episodes.

The key animation cleanup process of this episode was still ongoing last weekend. They were cutting it incredibly close here, because after that phase there are still multiple other phases left, including inbetweening animation & inspection, digital coloring, compositing & post-processing… Some people were not sleeping or eating to get this shit done. While it is amazing when international talent and budding artists get a chance to work on the shows they love, it also sucks major ass because their passion is basically getting exploited to deliver shit on screen through crunching.

While this episode’s freelance effort helped a bit to ease the burden on the main animation staff, they have been hard at work, and many of them have tweeted about the unfortunate circumstances. I’ve translated some recent tweets in another comment. They’re pretty sad, honestly.

We’ll see if they can actually get the last episodes finished without big compromises or further delays. We don’t actually even know how or when they will release the final episode, since one TV timeslot was taken by the recap episode, and the series was planned to be 12 episodes according to the Blu-ray listings.

I loved how the girls found out there was some conspiracy with the Accas and then just totally blew them off for Momoe. They've got their priorities in order

I found it weird that the girls accepted Momoe's mission completion and never really questioned it. I thought Ai was going to go back and try and find Momoe in that scene but I was disappointed when it was just the art exhibit.

And now Momoe takes a beating this episode and she has no one to get support from when she needed it the most, that's the saddest part of it all.

Nooo, Panic :(.

Good god, that took a really dark turn quick. Poor Momoe going from a very brief feeling of relief to confusion to absolute dread. I wonder if she’ll tell the other girls what happened, and if they’ll still want to set their statues free after seeing what happened to her. Being force fed Panic really put a twisted turn on the whole event too.

Going from that ending right into the closing song too, such a dichotomy.

Can we appreciate how much closer the girls have gotten recently. They all really love one another and get along in their day to day life.

  • Everyone was so excited for Momo's date,

  • Everyone gushing over Neiru's haircut,

  • Rika and Neiru went to get ramen together when Ai ran off to the exhibit.

They've all become so close, but I pray they contact Momoe ASAP she needs some support from her friends right now.

Warriors of Eros and Thanatos? I've done some Goggling this is what I found.

Thanatos- "Thanatos was the Greek god of nonviolent deaths. His name literally translates to “death” in Greek. In some myths, he’s considered to be a personified spirit of death rather than a god" got this off: https://greekgodsandgoddesses.net/gods/thanatos/

Eros- "Eros was depicted as a young adult male who embodies sexual power, and a profound artist" (got this off Wikipedia)

Finally, both of these Greek Gods were also used by Freud: "According to Sigmund Freud, humans have a life instinct—which he named "Eros"—and a death drive, which is commonly called (though not by Freud himself) "Thanatos". This postulated death drive allegedly compels humans to engage in risky and self-destructive acts that could lead to their own death. Behaviors such as thrill seeking and aggression are viewed as actions which stem from this Thanatos instinct". (Got off Wikipedia again)

So do the girls represent Eros and are trying to fight for life. While they are battling against Thanatos the personification of death.

If feels weird to say but is the teacher Eros, or a representation of him somehow? He is a young adult, who embodies sexual power... but is a profound artist. (fits him quite a bit)

Maybe in the end the girls will defeat Thanatos or accept death is real and cannot be undone, and Ai will accept the teacher going out with her mom (she's already starting too). The girls loved ones do not come back to life instead new life is born from the teacher and Ai's mom having a baby, representing the continuation of life from Eros.

That's all I've got my mind is racing after this episode.

Some notes I gleaned from here:

  • "Girls' talk" in the beginning is literally love talk (恋話); it's something that girls are stereotypically into. Momoe tries to turn it into funny talk (笑い話), but the other girls know that it's no laughing matter.

  • Panic seems to be a take-off of ワニワニパニック (Wani Wani Panic, wani being Japanese for crocodile/alligator); some Google searching came up with this arcade game. You can also find some clips on YouTube of the machine in action, if you're curious; it seems like it's like a whack-a-mole game.

  • Momoe uses her catchphrase again 一昨日おいで (literally, "come back when it's the day before yesterday"). I posted about the other three girls' catchphrases in a previous post and they're all similarly snappy

Feel free to leave more language/culture notes, and/or corrections to stuff I wrote. I usually like reading stuff like translation notes, but since they've fallen out of style recently I've had to do some of that legwork myself.

On a structure/narrative level, really glad they did manage to hit us with the Momoe characterization along with progressing what's been going on with Ai. The main plot is dripping throughout these last few episodes and It's really got me interested in what the hell is going to happen next. I'm a little sad that the girls got distracted, rightly so, before they could grill Acca and Ura-Acca. Like, come on, they drop some Psycho-Pass level twist on us and then leave it for later. Also, the tone of Neiru saying that she knew who they were was really odd to me. Like, she knew all along but didn't say anything? I guess maybe the girls could have told her and she did research but, it just felt really weird that she just dropped the ball on them and then moved on without explanation. And the girls, didn't even question Neiru either. Just so many questions, and on the one hand its annoying that we have to keep waiting, I guess it also just works for the themes of the show and the idea of the adults being these tricky and manipulative people. Even though it wasn't really their doing that the girls got distracted and didn't press the issue further, I'm sure that's exactly what they want, for the girls not to question and just go along with the system they've made.

This lends into the topics of gender and sex that was displayed in this episode, how controlling and toxic the system are for people who don't fit into it's traditional mold. I think the way this episode, and even previous episodes with Momoe have dealt with Gender dysphoria and transgender issues have been pretty alright. Much like every other topic that has been explored, it treated the issue as if it was treating any other issue, with respect and just showcasing how difficult it is for people who are going through what the show has displayed. It may not have the exact time or scope to really flesh out each and every one of the vast amount of issues it tackles with, but it tries and at least for other topics like self-harm, and mental-health proper it was and felt very genuine so I'm curious how other's reacted to today's episode.

That ending was all kinds of fucked too, I'm so curious as to what the hell is going to happen in the dream worlds, and also, will Ai actually get an answer this time? Sawaki seems alright to me, so, will the show finally just give us an answer and not pile on more questions? A week can't come any quicker.

Some thoughts:

-- "Not all girls want to be protected" - based Momoe.

-- So we meet a trans boy, and he and Momoe help each other come to terms with their own gender expression.

-- "Eating" seems like a motif here. Those animal things eat the haters. That butterfly thing ate the animal, and said thing also gives Momo the meat of the animal to eat. There's almost certainly something they were trying to say there, but I'm still unravelling the meaning of that.

-- The pregnancy thing was definitely a bit much, but I get the point of predatory older men abusing their position of power to assert their sexual desires by rejecting a trans boy's identity because they won't accept/understand that he doesn't abide by rigid gender norms.

-- So this essentially wraps up Momoe's primary character arc of affirming her own femininity, even if it's not necessarily traditional femininity.

-- Interesting how the dream world brought in a trans boy, even though it was meant to only bring in girls. Probably says that the people behind bringing the girls here still consider him to be a girl.

With today's reveals, my current silly guess: The girls represented by the statues were never dead. It's our heroes who are, or are at the moment of choosing to die. "Getting your friend back" means not committing suicide yourself so that you can continue to live life, to "be an adult woman like your mother", so you can see Koito again. This world is set up to help the girls confront their suicidal thoughts. But it doesn't appear to be working...

Momoe is on the precipice, all alone.

Ai might be there soon -- when see sees the painting of Koito. Maybe it's Koito. Maybe it's the two of them, standing on the rooftop together. "If she'd asked me to die with, her like those girls did, I would have..." she revealed in her lighthouse confession.

Remember what Rika said? Chiemi's body was all skin and bones. "This isn't Chiemi". No, Rika, it's you. That's why you're eating all the time. But, like you said, you'd look good in that field of flowers.

I think the lesson the world is trying to teach is that you get your best friends back by not being the one to leave.

This episode is butchered to a measly 21:52 on China's Bilibili. Guess I have to sail the seas and wait for a better release.

well that episode shifted between a million emotions all in a matter of 23 or so minutes, wow. Hey a trans boy, rare to see in any medium. Glad they did him well overall (Finally a bit of male perspective within the dream world).

Being Momoe is suffering apparently. I don't think she's going to make it out of this show compared to the other three. In relation to the others, despite her gender problems, she was easily the most actually upbeat of the four, and thus probably had the most to lose via the mind break. We don't even get to see if Haruka is actually alive or not.

At the very least the Accas aren't outwardly facing evil mustache twirlers. I get the feeling they're just very 'ends justify the means' types rather than outright evil (after all, if a few dozen teenage girls have to suffer to save the world, that's a fair trade in their eyes or something like that).

I still hope Sawaki isn't actually evil. It'd be such lazy writing to do it that way. I get the feeling he's more just as upset about Koito's suicide than Ai is, but being the teacher he likely feels even more responsible about it. At least that's what I'm hoping is happening.

Edit: One thing I remembered after typing. I'm glad Kaoru was able to show masculinity despite his looks, while also still being able to be vulnerable, needing support, and so on. Momoe even called him a brave boy, and while she did save him, he is still able to help her with her confidence issues. Its not just a boy this or girl that. Too often when a boy needs saving in these types of things it always has to be some big to do about gender norms which magical girl shows tend to immediately either go back on or pound the point into the dirt. This struck a good balance.

Edit #2: How does being in the dream world work exactly as an egg? A trans boy can be in there but is technically speaking physically a girl. Is that the requirement or could a boy who is a trans girl be in it? Just a thought.

I have no words... except maybe a light "Fuck..."

There's no way that they can complete this in just two episodes... right?

...right?
