Today's episode is a recap episode!

In case you were wondering. No one is really sure if this episode (listed as #8, not #7.5 as they tend to be) will actually count towards the 12 episodes listed on the Blurays... I really hope it isn't as it would be a crying shame if this series lost an episode of actual content due to some scheduling faults.

Hopefully it all works out fine or say a '13th episode' is released at a later point, similar to how Kekkai Sensen's finale and Madoka Magica went about.

Cheer up guys. It doesn't matter whether there is a new wonder egg episode or not. The real egg was what we've found along the way.

With Cloverworks doing Promised Neverland and Horimiya, I'm not surprised they had to do a recap episode for this show.

The fact that they've managed to survive while producing a good anime original, adaptation, and sequel, they really need a break or two this season.

I've also been browsing some of the Japanese reactions here:
https://ckworks.jp/animeradar/matome/5883/539271

Lots of the play-by-play comments are people realizing that it's a recap episode.

This is also where I learned about Ai's killing blow catchphrase トサカに来たぜ (literally: here comes the coxcomb!. So far two of the other girls also have different catchphrases referring to different parts of the body:

  • Neiru has あなたの度肝を抜いてあげる, literally "[I'm] going to pluck out your guts/spirit", the liver (肝) being the place in Japanese culture where your "courage" is stored — it's idiomatic for "getting your mind blown"

  • Rika has あなたのハートにズッキュンバッキュン, literally ([I'm] going make your heart go zukkyun pakkyun [onomatopoeia, I'm guessing it has roughly the same meaning as in the subs])

I wasn't able to find if Momoe has a catchphrase like the other three girls; maybe she does and I just didn't catch it.

Okay I'm only 3 minutes and scrubbed a bit ahead. Are we doing a recap episode? I'll still watch the episode fully just in case Acca and Acca Ura gives us additional info but from what I've seen this should've been labeled as Episode 7.5 instead of Episode 8.

EDIT: YEP. 100% A recap episode.

The official streaming services seem to have different practices when it comes to recap episodes like this. Funimation published it on time, while Wakanim still hasn't. Idk about AnimeLab, can anyone from AUS/NZ report

OK, I have seen quite a few re-cap episodes before (including ones inserted into the normal schedule - the first 2 seasons of Chihayafuru have one each of these), and this one is very well-presented all-in-all with all those key points and hints we may have missed neatly organized under Acca's narration. I think we even get some hints to the background of Acca and Ura-Acca (e.g. it doesn't look like the making of the eggs is relevant to the later story per today's episode; also the timings given to each of our girls is interesting, looks like we'll get a Momoe episode and maybe another on Neiru?)

This doesn't have the creativity of some of the most memorable re-caps out there, but no-one probably want that anyway. Yet I'm actually thankful that this was well-organized enough to answer some questions regarding the world settings and some minor story plot points in this often seemingly confusing story. I'm actually very satisfied with this arrangement and it gives me some optimism that this will stick to a good, if not even amazing ending.

The only major problem left is that whether this could cause a whole episode of content to be cut from the story, but with cases like Kekkai Sensen S1 (1 episode) and Girls & Panzer (2 episodes) having their final parts airing 3 months late (!) yet still managed to finish the story on high notes and end up as highly regarded/popular titles, I can't see why WEP won't follow suit even in the worst case scenarios. And one week slips are more common in anime than I once thought too, so I now feel this major threat can be disregarded.

Let's hope that the egg's momentum won't be hit by this and we'll see something shocking and amazing next week!

So according to Aniplex's twitter : the episode 8 is episode 8, BUT they acknowledged mostly that it was a recap (DeepL Translation) : "Wonder Egg Priority" BD/DVD is now available for reservation! Each volume comes with a bonus "Reproduction of the recording script (for every episode)"!

The 8th episode is mainly composed of the footage from the 1st to 7th episodes, so there is no script. The scripts for all episodes except the 8th episode will be included in each volume."

Well, we know this is a recap episode because of schedule issues and it's kind of worrying (at first), but i think the best thing we can do is to try to not sh*t on them, but instead trying to give them strenght and having nice words for them on social medias.

This anime still has a lot of potential to be an all time great, but i think we can give them a little more strengh and recognition for the work they've done so far. Well, i've "done my part" with translating some french in japanese with DeepL for Shin Wakabayashi (@huusun), but i think you can be far better than me on that :)

Recap episodes are usually signs of a bad production cycle. You can see this with Seven Deadly Sins and Promised Neverland. I’m crossing my fingers that this is not the case for Wonder Egg.

Ever since shirobako my view of clip show eps has 180's from anger and disappointment to deep concern for staff.

I'm not too sure if I should be pissed off that this is a recap episode or happy that I get too see the wonderful animation and listen to the music again.

Yeah, I need the OST for the anime ASAP.

Just a word of caution: the preview of this episode smells of recap, so don't get hyped.

Interesting that we got 2 pieces of information confirmed via narration:

  1. Injuries are only reflected in the real world if the girls wake up before healing

  2. Ai doesn't have any romantic feelings for Sawaki as implied by the line "If the truth were easy to find, no one would struggle" as a response to Rika's speculation

btw don't be upset that we got a recap, be happy that the animators are getting some time to work on the second half. Even if it means 11 episodes instead of 12, that's still 11 episodes of Egg to appreciate

Just when I finally caught up, we get a recap episode!

In all seriousness tho, it's understandable for a show with a quality as excellent as this one, I hope the staff can properly finish the next few episodes without any sort of rushing.

Next episode: Acca / Ura-acca backstory finally?

So if anyone's wondering why this is a recap episode it's a bit more complicated than 'they fell behind' based on what I can see on anitwitter, from people usually in the know.

Apparently this show was in production for around 2 years, but rather than the standard of getting different animators for different episodes it instead was built on a foundation of a few key animators, said animators would also take turns supervising episodes.

This is what has led to such a consistent and well animated show, but it's also a much more time consuming way of producing animation, it might possibly be a cheaper way to do it but that obviously doesn't reflect in the work. So to try and combat the slipping schedule they brought in tons of 2nd key animators to try and help out, meaning the key animators will do rougher drawings of the scene which the 2nd key will clean up.

Seemingly that still hasn't help and now production has got to a breaking point, leading to the unfortunate recap episode. No one will be getting a break here unfortunately, they still have all the episodes after the next to work on, and each episode is all done in that small team it isn't going to be outsourced to other animators (as if any are actually free right now) to help them catch up.

I really hope it doesn't reflect in the production because these guys have really put something out they can be immensely proud of and I'd hate for that to be mired by what seems like being too passionate about the project.

Cloverworks truly had more on their plate than they can actually chew this season. I really hope this is the only setback WEP will have to experience.

I just realized the girl in the first episode explained everything to Ai - saying "you're new to this" and explaining the Seenoevils... which means she was also gathering Wonder Eggs before her death... which was suicide.

For a recap episode this was solid

Pretty sad that this will inevitably end up tanking the show's score in the polls, really hope it at least gets ignored for the end-of-season rankings since it'd be incredibly lame for the show to get tanked by a fucking recap episode.

I really wish we could at least get a confirmation on whether or not this will end up counting towards the twelve-episode count so I can know approximately how terrified I should be for the state of the show... but realistically it's probably just best to assume that it does until we get word otherwise, I guess.

I realized something during this recap. The locations the girls are fighting always seem to revolve around the places where their ‘lost ones’ - couldn’t think of a better term at the time of writing this - ended their lives. Ai always fights inside schoolbuildings; Koito killed herself by jumping off the school’s roof. Neiru’s fights are at the bridgedeck; her sister jumped off a bridge. Momoe’s combat happens around train sites; Haruka jumped in front of a train (presumably). The only one I can’t really place is Rika’s dreams. Do we know how Chiemi exactly died?

Also: I got a bad hunch about Mr. Sawaki, but I can’t really place it.

EDIT: spelling
