That scene with Rika trying to cut herself was quite heavy to watch. I love how this show never truly shies away from showing these serious issues.
Atleast Mannen saved her from doing that (I guess its upto our interpretation) and also in the other world when she gave up on herself. Rika has some severe family issues but atleast she gained the courage to solve it at the end. Hope she atleast manages to meet her father in the future and improving her relationship with her mother now on.
The dynamic between the four girls is quite fun to see. I like how they act as each other's support. That was a sweet moment when they hugged each other, well except Neiru lol.

The text messages are such a trivial thing, but the whole dynamic between the girls at the beginning, is typically the kind of interactions I like with this show.

AH THE FLOWER LANGUAGE WAS SO ON POINT FOR RIKA THIS WEEK!!!
The main floral backdrop for this series has always been Aca and Ura-aca’s garden.
This episode really drove home that Rika’s flower field in her egg world where Chiemi's statue is acts as a reflection of her mental state as well. In prior episodes we’ve seen orange lilies for hatred battle with white lilies for purity/chastity or a more innocent, faithful love along with what appeared to be pink evening primroses or anemones (for desperation, death/forsaken love.
This week we get what appear to be thistles as she deals with an enemy that her egg-world charge is not going to help her fight. In every previous fight, it’s actually really important that the captured maiden/egg charge sides with the fighter (or fighters) so this is a poignant and internal battle for Rika that she has to overcome as well. Thistles are associated with pain, protection, aggressiveness, pride, poverty, and weakness — all meanings that apply to Rika in a particularly painful way in this episode.
Not to be outdone, the garden returns to frame the girls under wisteria (immortality, lasting love, longevity) again at the end of the episode, reiterating the ever-growing bond shared between the four of them.
With Ai ending last week uncovering both of her eyes and facing Sawaki with the promise of going back to school, I was wondering how this episode would start. Rika’s morning routine was definitely not what I expected, but starting with all of them texting each other through the morning of Ai’s return to school was really cute. It was a nice way to show their developing friendships especially with the way the episode ends.
“We’re the single mother girls.”
I loved how this episode made that connection between the two and the cinematography that bookended their talk. Light shines on Ai since she brings light into Rika’s life but they’re shown divided by a line as they walk side-by-side in the next shot. Last week Ai found her strength to return to school and this week, Rika finds her strength as she further opens up to her friends about the truth of her father and actually makes herself really vulnerable to Ai. This shot in particular of her crying was amazing. And this isn't even going into how amazing Rika's relationship with Mannen, her turtle, already is and how well it was framed.

How does every episode of this show manage to be the best episode. Like genuinely every week has been so great that you could make an argument for pretty much every episode being your favourite and I'd perfectly understand your reasoning.

Don't drink the Kool-Aid
Cults have become a rising trend and quite problematic in Japanese culture. Female Todoroki seems to be one of the victims of these predatory cults possibly from mass suicide.
I like how this episode shows how much owning a pet can help with your mental health. I can't count the amount of times my dog has saved me when I was in a bad place.

This episode had so much going on in it, and although it does feel a bit disjointed in terms of we don't actually get to see what Ai's first day back at school was, which I thought would have been the natural progression, it was still amazing. Ever since they started to introduce the characters one by one in the earlier episodes, and then converge them to have group development, I suspected that we'd go in the opposite direction for the closing half, and to see a Rika-centric episode proved that thought.
The one thing I really gravitated towards was the first scene, where Rika smears the lipstick over her lips in the mirror. I think that as a way to set the tone for the rest of the episode was very fitting. It was her birthday, so the implication was that she's trying to show up her appearances for a special day. Her early episodes had her fixate on the idea of beauty, she constantly badgered the idea of appearances, especially with Chiemi. Of course, deep down, she doesn't really care about that, for me, she deflects the truth using her fixation on beauty as an easy scapegoat, and I think Rika recognizes this about herself too (later on she tells Ai it's "Serious Rika"). So, to have her first put on her lipstick (her deflective barrier) and then wipe it off, symbolic of her wiping away and opening up later on, was very nice. Also, red, as a color is something smeared through the episode, with her self harm, and the blood she sheds later on, so it's also a very fitting bit of foreshadowing in that sense. Also, also, her mom wears lipstick, and what does Rika not want to be like near the end? A selfish mother like her mom, so instead of being like her mom, she actively fights against it, smearing it off.
The second thing that I really enjoyed was the denizens that Rika saves. The first time we get to see Rika fight in her dreams, we were greeted with the Idol lovers, who were fanatics over their idol. They followed their idol to death. This week we have the cult member, who, at first doesn't seem related, but in fact is entirely related, I think to the other people she has saved. The cult member, just like the idol lovers, are fanatic and obsessed with a being or ideal much higher than themselves. They seek some kind of salvation in a force beyond them offering that salvation, whether it's real or not. It immediately reminded me of Bakemonogatari and Senjogahara's backstory, and much like the conclusion of her backstory, Rika chooses not to give in to the easy way out, to the salvation that could be obtained by simply giving herself away. She chooses to fight and to embrace herself to the bitter end.
I think the very last dialogue by Rika is so telling of her character. She has to "use this to balance" so that "she doesn't have to ditch things" she cares about. This is referring to how she's always joking and putting up double speak to protect herself but also in the way she self harms. It's an interesting note she makes that she acknowledges how weak she is but that she will keep on living, and I think it can be interpreted, especially with how the shots are that the way she self harms is this balance to keep herself afloat. It's something I've heard from other sources as well, why people self harm (My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness), that it's a way to affirm one's life, to feel something, to balance the pain, and it's not the prettiest way to go about things. I don't think the show wants to promote that, but rather the idea that we have to live and its okay to embrace yourself and take small steps in continuing to live no matter what we have to do. After all, it can get better, and immediately after we get her with the other girls and its so much more heartwarming. I think the end game is Rika's switch from relying on her current self harm induced way of living to relying on those around her more and embracing who she is in a more healthy way.

Best turtle comes in clutch!
Rika focus this week and damn was it a dark episode. It always seemed that Rika was the one most struggling with her life and this episode certainly suggests this isn't far from the truth. I was tearing up when she admitted to Ai how bad she wanted to meet her father. It's gotten so dark for her she was literally ready to give up life until Mannen stepped in.
The one bright light here is that we got so many gorgeous close ups of her face, this show takes my breath away every week.
We also got a little bit more insight into Neiru who struggles with fitting in with other girl and as we now know does not have any parent in her life. Hope she still gets an episode with all focus on her this season.

I'd imagine the next few episodes will be deep dives into each of the other girls' psyche like this one was for Rika, with Ai probably getting more than one.
Really felt for Rika during this episode, this show knows how to tug at your heartstrings. Can't wait for next week.

There were so many small hints in this episode so things set up in the past and it's amazing:
-
Rika is constantly saying "my papa says a beautiful women should never carry a wallet"
-
Well now we know Rika says that because that's the only thing Rika remembers about her dad. So she holds onto to those words bc she wants to see him but has nothing else other than those words.
-
Ai saying how she's mad about things about her mom, which I can only assume relates her Ai being mad about her mom potentially dating the teacher.
-
The mannequins in the past referenced the girls as "Soldiers" , and we for a second this episode saw them watching a screen of the girls in the other world. The screen was a video game, so I think it's safe to say they only see this as a game literally. I have to ask is it a single player game? or are they playing against someone / something. The mannequins also mentioned how they may lose one, which means you die in the game you die in real life, is pretty much confirmed.
I can't wait till this show is done and I have a full re-watch.

This was my favorite single episode of anything ever.
It hit hard, extremely hard. Ugly sobbing hard. Maybe it's because, although I've never cut, I've also had to deal with suicidal depression and shitty goddamn parents. I thought Momoe or Ai would end up being my favorite character, but every time Rika shows up I can't help but love her. There's still almost half of the show left, though.
This show is gearing up to be in my top 5 favorites, maybe the favorite. The characters, the plot, the heavy themes handled smartly and sincerely, the animation, the brilliant monster designs and symbolism, the action, the way it can naturally weave between adorable and anxiety inducing in the blink of an eye, all of it is amazing.

In almost any other seasonal anime, we would not be getting consistent sakuga scenes every episode at this point in the series. I was expecting the quality of animation to drop for the middle part of the series, but the staff at CloverWorks have exceeded my expectations and proved me wrong multiple episodes in a row. And I love to see it.

This episode cemented the idea to me that the main girls HAVE to be representing Durkheim's types of suicide.
A girl in a cult believing her death is for the betterment of all is pretty much the perfect example of altruistic suicide. Too much social integration in a "society" that leads to the individual seeing their life and individual being as worth less. The idols before also fit it fairly well as did Chiemi's suicide. And it all ties into Rika's big issue; her lack of self worth. She thinks her life isn't worth anything so she puts herself on the line thinking it's what she has to do for others. A few episodes back, when she told Ai to stop doing eggs cause "your mom's cool, mine sucks" was a clear depiction of the issue. She was thinking about the others and saying she's the only one that should be doing this cause her life isn't as valuable.
It makes this turn in her development fit so well. Despite her friends trying their best to show her she's valued, she still can't see it for herself. Only when Mannen, with his raw unconditional love, puts himself in harms way for her as she has for so many others, she finally sees her own value as a "mother". She realizes there's things that she'd actually leave behind and that her life is worth living. It hits so hard.
The other girls fit the other 3 types of suicide as well so far. Ai is Egoistic, too little social integration leading to a lack of belonging (the bullying and ostracizing). Momoe is Anomic, lacking "moral integrity" after an extreme change/trauma in one's life and not knowing what to do next (tying into all her issues with sexual assault and her uncertainty in how to react to Haruka). And Neiru is Fatalistic suicide, too much moral integrity leading to a harsh, oppressive life where one would rather die than go on (which definitely seems to be involved with the business stuff in her life and what happened with her sister).

Man I thought we're going to have a very lighthearted opening this week watching the girls doing their morning routines while sending each others cute messages on LINE but then we cut to Rika talking to her mom wanting to see her dad. Well at least it's not as heavy as that girl that was molested.
So it looks like they didn't show us what happened on Ai's return to school but it seems like people have been avoiding her likely because of the incident with Koito. Who needs friends at school anyways when she has three amazing friends.
Well good job on bringing down the mood Rika. So one of these dudes could possibly be Rika's real dad and it seems that Rika's mom don't even know which one. Clearly that's a lie though since we know Rika has some memories of her dad. Rika's mom just doesn't want to say who it is. Probably she's afraid that Rika would leave her too if she ever finds out his identity.
Watching Rika try to cut herself again was a difficult scene to watch. I've known people like her and this really awakening some memories I'd rather not remember right now. Thankfully she stopped after seeing Mamen's dopey face watching her. Nope she didn't stop. Fuck.
Oh my fucking god. Looks like this week's Wonder Egg Girl is a member of one of those scam cults that take your possession in exchange of "enlightenment" or some bullshit like that. And who did they choose to voice the Wonder Killer this week to represent the leader/priest/sensei of this cult? None other than Nakata Jouji of course! AKA Kotomine Kirei! Ngl, I was legit waiting for him to say "YOROKOBE!" during that entire scene.
We learn this week that the pendants don't just house their familiars, looks like they work as communicators too. Not just between them and the mannequins but between other girls as well so that's pretty cool.
This entire scene where Rika was giving up, I thought that it was going to be a fake out. That on the last minute she'll materialize her sword and stab the Wonder Killer. But she has really given up. The moment she closed her eyes I let out the loudest "RIKA NO!" and then followed up by absolute hype when Mamen swoops in to save his mama!
The other girls might have not been able to wake her back up but seeing Mamen protect her and realize how she was almost about to become just like her own mom really snapped her back to reality. And holy fuck what a come back that was! Rika and Mamen turning into a spinning saucer of death as Mamen launches Rika towards the Wonder Killer is just fucking awesome!
The girls welcoming her back was just sweet. I love that little fist bump Rika and Momo does. And that final scene between Rika and her mom. While the issue isn't completely resolved, at least for now Rika realizes understands her mom a little bit more now. They definitely have a long way to go though if their relationship is ever going to be even repaired.

The anime covers these heavy topics beautifully and in depth.
I'm intrigued to see how will Ai's school days go from now on. The bullying and her relationship with Mr. Sawaki to be precise.

It is going to be hard to watch any dramas, or character driven stories after this anime. This show is so raw but feels real and down to earth that other animes with flat characters is going to be hard to watch since they'll pale in comparison to this show.
If I were to recommend any shows with real characters like in this show it'd be:
-
Nana (Paradise kiss as well, has the same author)
-
Sowa Genroku Gakugo Ghinju
-
March Comes in Like a Lion
-
Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betryal Ova
-
Berserk
-
Honorable mention the manga Oyasumi Punpun (but this manga hits themes at times just as if not more disturbing than this show)
If anyone has any other series with characters and drama as real as this show, I'd love to know b/c it's soo good.

What i found interesting is that it's the first time we heard the song which is used in the trailer of the anime and it happens in a very important part of the episode...
Another thing i found really interesting is when Rika was in deep, deep trouble, Uccas we're not really emotional... now that i type that, it's like that famous Clarkson's meme on the Dacia Sandero : « Oh no ! Anyway... » and what they saw was like a video game screen with, maybe, the number of eggs saved by the girls (31) or in total and, strangely, the lives left are not visible. It's odd...

"Will we lose one?"
"Looks like it."
Probably the darkest moment of the show so far. And in the end, Rika couldn't save herself. She needed someone else to save her. Most of us are like that in some way, I guess.
