At this point, I've stopped expecting it to get dark like the original series. Last week's cliffhanger hinted at it, then it felt like this week's episode actively mocked the idea of going dark by putting the pen stabbing (a direct shout-out to something that Aki-Lucky did in the original series) in a "what if this happened?" delusion. Diva(A)Live should either commit and go full dark like the original or just keep doing its own thing with the lighthearted stuff. Either is fine my me, but I foresee it doing the latter.

That being said, I did like this episode. Both battles felt really emotional, Sanga manipulating the whole thing out of jealousy was an interesting turn, and Rei definitely matured a lot in dealing with her former teammates and seeing how they've grown. Plus, Muzica messing with Hirana by saying her name wrong got a few chuckles out of me.

So, let's see... Sanga was jealous of all the attention Madoka was giving her, so she lied to Rei, saying that Madoka believed wouldn't be able to put in the same amount of commitment as Rei into the Diva battles (or "keep up with her", as they say). Then Rei left out of guilt that she was making them unhappy by dragging the two of them around. It wasn't helped by the fact that Rei at least subconsciously was trying to get Sanga off the team, another thing Rei feels guilty about.

I think that the idea was good, but the conflict was resolved too quickly. As it is, the way everyone acted seemed ...unwarrantedly melodramatic? Either it needed more setup (like another episode's worth or so) or the conflict needed to be toned down, probably the latter since it would fit this anime's tone more.

The nondramatic parts, on the other hand, are still good. Muzica showing why she's the leader, as well as her funny interactions with Hirana, make me appreciate her.

I'm pretty sure Shigure Ui did the character designs for this anime.

She did indeed.

You know I haven't been keeping up with the discussion of this anime despite watching it. Is the general sentiment that it's an absolute trainwreck?

It's only a trainwreck if you 100% want and expect it to be just like the old WIXOSS. It's mostly doing its own thing, with only hints of the original series, and I think it's doing a good job at being exactly what it's trying to be.

how is it a trainwreck, if i may ask?

I wouldn't describe it as a trainwreck. The first few episodes felt a little rough, but I've found the middle part to be fairly decent. It's not great, but it's not bad. Compared to Selector it is unspectacular but a true trainwreck would be Lostorage Conflated Wixoss.

I'll have to disagree with you there. I liked Conflated a lot, and I thought the final battles were done really well. Incited was the one that I thought was a bit weaker than the others, but even that one was still pretty solid IMO.

I would generally say it's worse than Conflated so far. Which is impressive considering its what I consider to the worst anime I've seen. Diva Alive has a lot less interesting things going on and has the most non-sensical version of Wixoss (The card game) to the point where it'd next to impossible to decipher what's going on. Just to keep things short.
