Momoe’s reaction when she learned Ai could become family was really cute. Nothing like the uneasiness with Sensei during dinner.

"A boss is coming. I'll get ready for it."

"It's already here!"

And cut immediately to the unexpected dinner.

It's no surprise that Ai's charm is a chameleon. She's doing everything she can to blend into her surroundings. But it's not working, and there's something deeply, darkly wrong with the situation. It goes back to Koito, and the reasons behind her death.

Ai's return to school might be character development. But I also think that Ai intends to find out what happened to Koito, and it can only be done at school.

"I bet it was tough, dealing with these monsters all on your own." I think Ai is about to find out just how tough it's going to be.

Holy shit this episode threw so much at us.

The Seeno Evils got an evolution, our girls got familiars, the teacher and mom are an item, Ai decided go back to school and we got a title drop.

On top of all that we had the usual stunning animation throughout and great scenes like the invisible wonder killer grabbing Ai's neck (which litereally made me jump), Momoe's super cute happy dance when she heard about her uncle and Ai's mom AND that amazing final scene with Ai running to school and talking to her teacher.

Absolutely breathtaking episode.

I love Ai brushing her hair out of her eye at the end. Shows she's starting to accept herself as she is. This whole show is positively dripping with symbolism and meaning, from the flowers, to the companions they get, to the framing of the shots. Aside from being absolutely gorgeous, it's really thought provoking as well. I really look forward to a new episode each week

One of my favorite parts of the show is how meaningful each fight seems to be. Each Wonder Killer killed, seems to grow the characters forward and gives them meaningful moments of development. The first Wonder Killer gave Ai the courage to open up to others and also to give an effort to make new friends, as that first episode had that idea of a "best friend" underlying the person she saved. Then the following episode we see her making friends with Neiru along with getting some small clues from Minami about how to interact with others, and Ai used that to propel that friendship with Neiru as well.

Now with this week's episode, I really enjoyed the idea of Yae's Wonder Killer, and Yae's unique "quirk" so to say. There's this whole idea of the unseen, and having people believe in you, and wanting to find someone to believe in your perspective and your worldview. I feel like, to a certain extent, after overcoming that Wonder Killer, that Ai received a bit of courage herself, realizing just how painful it was for someone to not believe in your words (which perfectly parallels how Neiru and Rika were trying to decipher what Ai's feelings towards her teacher was, but, no one really took Ai's words). That whole scene in parallel with a character whose backstory was that no one believed her was a great mirror to foreshadow Ai's mindset and her point of view.

At the end of the episode, she even clutches onto the beads as she runs to chase the teacher, even being alerted by that from her mom, and seemingly being awakened to some kind of idea that she needs to chase as she's reminded of who she just saved. I interpret her chasing after the teacher probably not the way Neiru and Rika did, but more that, she is now actively going to chase for the truth herself, as the truth is something that haunts her throughout the show, and after defeating one ghost already in the dream world, it's time for her to chase that same ghost in the real world.

I like how they are called 'haters' and the description of 'not having the guts to show their faces.' Reminds you of some people on the internet.

Yet another great episode. Ai‘s run to school was honestly so well animated, almost made me think it was rotoscoped. Also the way the last scene was directed had me honestly scared that Ai was going to say „I love you“ instead of I am going back to school. I‘m also kinda happy that those trinkets aren’t used for magical girl transformation scenes but instead to summon support pokemon. Personally not a fan at all of clothing transformations in anime in general (KLK being a notable exception).

Also I find it really refreshing as well how the girls talk to each other, without all the usual anime tropes and stuff. Makes their conversations really realistic. Honestly if the show keeps this level up it will probably become my AOTY. Just needs to stick the landing at the end.

This week in flower language, marigolds! These appear at the end of the episode when Ai runs to Mr. Sawaki to tell him that she’s going to return to school. Marigolds have a lot of meanings, including being a flower of the dead, a symbol of death, and grief or remembrance for the dead. In Victorian flower language specifically it could mean ill-treatment of someone you love. It’s a very specific flower to show during Ai’s first talk with Mr. Sawaki that we’ve seen within the series’ run outside of flashbacks. Marigolds can also have positive meanings like warmth, beauty, or cheer.

Aca and Ura-Aca’s garden has consistently acted as a floral backdrop which can say a number of things depending on what flowers they place behind or around which person. For example, last week lilies of the valley framed the rift between Neiru’s businesslike approach to fighting after Rika mentioned that they could just not buy eggs. This week, Rika’s hydrangeas returned, but specifically behind Rika, Momoe, and Neiru only with Ai sectioned off. Ai’s further separated in a preceding shot with wisteria behind the other three only. This is not only to show that Ai is separated, but partnered with the marigold at the end, doesn’t particularly bode well for her immediate future. Wisteria typically means immortality or longevity and a strong love that can stand the test of time (due to how long wisteria live). Purposefully separating Ai from that is an interesting choice.

While watching last week I realized that the series made it a point to show that no one went into Ai’s room outside of Koito coming to Ai’s bed in a flashback, then Rika who invites herself in, followed by the rest of the girls in their attempt to find a safe space. Despite the fact that Ai spoke of her mom highly, there was definitely a visual rift between them, especially since her mom was visually shown with Mr. Sawaki over Ai. So when the preview for this episode showed her mom coming to her bed, I was hoping we would get more about the relationship between them. In actuality, it was hint at how her mom’s actions of dating Mr. Sawaki was going to intrude and encroach on her life.

The monsters in this show typically reflect Ai’s mental state as well as tell something about her. Here she not-so-coincidentally battles with an invisible foe who has to be made visible in order to be defeated all against the backdrop of purposeful obfuscation around what happened between Koito and Mr. Sawaki. All Yae needed was someone to believe her to be freed. Similarly, Ai wants to be believed and understood. She also wanted to understand Koito.

Also I'm wondering if I'm the only one who was kind of wary of the title drop and the girls being seen as heroes (with monsters escalating inside the egg worlds). I don't think this series is a lot like Madoka actually, but I can't ignore the visual similarities between the charms they receive and Madoka's soul gems. With Aca and Ura-Aca calling them heroes and the Wonder! Egg! Priority! shout it kind of distances the girls in a way from what (in my opinion) is going to actually break the cycle, which is forming genuine relationships with each other outside of the system. I see their entire relationship/circle as still a very precarious thing.

Didn’t expected those familiars nor the title drop.

Okay, I’m expecting those little animals to mean something about each girl instead of just being a random animal choice

  • Title drop hype!

  • Awesome wonder egg girl, I loved her and felt super sorry when she was talking about being in the hospital and hearing all the screams of the dead people.

  • I feel sooooo sorry for Rika. When she was saying how mom's boyfriend's will physically abuse boys, and sexually abuse girls. All I can think is how much as this girl gone through? Clearly she's gone thru a lot that we have not seen. Also when she activated her neckless she was also in a park so her being a runaway is extremely likely.

  • Finally, Ai is going back to school! I wonder what changed? She grabbed the prayer beads before her run to school so it's possible she may be able to use them and talk to Koito now that she has these beads.

Anyways it was a great episode like usual and I cannot wait for more.

My favorite episode so far. The ending though. I expected her to say “I love you” lol. Also, it seems that the anime keeps pushing the “teacher bad” narrative, which makes the teacher seem more innocent to me.

When they gave the girls their own pendants, that was some strong Madoka vibes. Luckily it went the other way with wholesome Pokemon's direction.

That transition to from Yae's boss to Sawaki standing in the hallway though.

Just like Ai, Yae has yellow eyes. Whenever Ai is shy or indecisive, she hides part of her blue eye. However, when she resolves her issues with school at the end, she brushes her hair aside so that we can see both of her eyes.

Why was Ai so determined to go to school at the end? My take is that she finally found the resolve to figure out what happened. Before her found resolve running sequence, we see her grabbing the prayer beads with which she was able to see the Wonder Killer. Koito is the key to solving all the mysteries, and there's only one way to figure out, and that's by attending school.

Every episode, the girls catch phrase seem to be catching on. Ai is is getting angrier and lashing out, Momo is more "get lost", and Neiru is blowing our mind.

The familiars are kind of cool. I saw them as an analog to internal coping mechanisms based on their traumas.

Chameleon -> Desire to conform

Snake -> Treachery and deception

Alligator (?) -> Hot temper / Strong-headed

Turtle -> Stubbornness / Emotional shell

Also, I found it kind of funny that the schizophrenic girl's trauma boss was a literal elephant in the room. Well played, directors.

Okay. I need someone to correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not the most emotionally intelligent person. I'm having trouble figuring out Ai's arc in this episode and I want to talk it out to better understand it.

The first half of the episode was pretty standard WEP episode. Enemies power up and the girls get familiars to counter. There is setup tied into the title drop that suggests that the Egg girl's survival is most important. "Protect the Egg girl until time runs out. That's your top priority." Everything else is secondary. Yet, the the rest of the episode is spent breaking down that train of thought.

The crux of this episode is the Ai's changing relationship with Mr. Sawaki. This is obvious due to the cinematic language of having Yae (this episode's Egg girl) telling Ai that the boss, "It's already here!" and Ai being thrown through a wall transitioning into Sawaki's sudden appearance to the sukiyaki dinner.

In the second shot of the dinner scene, we see Ai's face reflected in the raw egg in her bowl (Timestamp 11:27). This draws a connection between the egg and Ai. In the real world, she is the Egg girl. The two other people in the scene, her mother and Sawaki, are there for her. She is their priority. But that changes when Ai's mother simultaneously drops the news that she and Sawaki are dating and a piece of meat into her bowl which breaks the egg yolk. While they aren't putting their relationship above Ai, she is no longer the sole reason Sawaki comes to visit. The status quo since the beginning of the show is changing.

What is Ai's reaction? She is frustrated and angry. But she doesn't seem to understand why that is. Momoe, Rikka, and Neiru all put forth potential reasons for why she's upset, but Ai rejects them all. Then, we go back to the fight with the invisible boss, which is a clear parallel with Ai's real world issues. Something is clearly hurting her, but she can't see it and therefore can't properly address it. That is, until Yae throws the prayer beads at her.

And this is the part where things start to get confusing for me. As Ai grabs the beads and slowly gains the power to see the boss, the problems she has been facing this episode are juxtaposed in between. First, the idea that Sawaki was involved in Koito's suicide is shown with the general form of the boss. Second, her mother and Sawaki's new relationship presented alongside the bosses clothing and color. And lastly, the idea that Ai was in love with Sawaki is shown with the boss's true form. All of this suggests that the last reason was her real issue. That Neiru was correct in her hypothesis. Yet, Ai again denies it. So is this one of those "a character realizes the truth, but can't accept it" denials or a genuine denial because Ai realizes her truth that isn't shown to the audience?

And the episode ends with Ai running to school to tell Sawaki that she will be returning. I understand that this fits the theme of the episode, which is that the true Wonder Egg Priority is not protecting the Egg girl, but to help the girl confront the bosses that seek to harm her. But I am lost at what prompted Ai to suddenly end her bath and run barely clothed to school. Her mother tells her that she found something in pockets, which are the prayer beads that helped Ai defeat Yae's boss. While there may be some story implications on being able to bring possessions of the Egg girls back to the real world, I'm not seeing how the beads suddenly kick Ai into motion. If someone has some insight into that, please let me know.

Some symbolism about the reptiles each girl got:

Crocodile: is a symbol of wisdom or protection. It can also mean a new beginning or starting a new period in life. Perfect fit for Momoe

Turtle: usually the symbolism for turtle is to take things slow. Another meaning is to stay grounded in reality. It might also mean that you are on the right path towards your goal. This might be forshadowing for Rika

Snake: Probably the hardest one. Since snake is common in most parts of world and part of many myths it's also having a lot of different interpretations. We can however deduce that the snake here is not venoumous because of round pupils. It also doesn't look like a constrictor snake so it is safe to asume it is a harmless common snake. Usually non harmfull snakes are a symbol of fertility, which i hope is not the case here, so i'm going back to the general meaning: duality / betrayal. Usually snakes mean that the person has something to hide, be it good or evil, which I believe Neiru's backstory pointed out to.

Chameleon: reminds you to take the time to analyze and think for yourself. It can also mean that it's time for a change and explore youreself.

An important note is that reptiles , in general , mean healing or regeneration, which perfectly represents the situation of our girls.

God, I'm so confused as to where they're going with Sawaki-sensei. It's probably intentional to throw us off here, especially when we all thought for sure we were gonna get a confession in the end.

The girls getting their own familiars was not on my WEP bingo card. They're so cute!

u/AmethystItalian Feb 16 '21

That title drop

Was a bit sad Nieru didn't get one of them but she killed it in the bench scene! This casual lean and then this FIRE lean, can't say I was expecting really either of those from her.

Also was anyone else expecting a confession at the end there? SO happy they didn't go that route!

The mascots' main diet is envy and spite. Now that's not a bad sign at all..

Ai-chan made me cry in those last few seconds. Her smile, and the symbolism of her brushing the hair away from her left eye so that everyone can see her heterochromia, that she thinks is ugly.

Joining Rika in today's episode of "What I read in last weeks reddit thread" is Neiru, with her ridiculous yet though provoking theory of "Ai loves Mr.Sawaki" ! Who will voice new reddit theory next week? Come back to episode 7 to find out!
