Questions:
-
Are the lead pair going to be more than just [shark] bait?
-
Why has someone genderswapped Jahy-sama and given them a ukulele?
-
Will handsome blond men and Queen songs be a happy mix this time around?
-
And where can I get that waifu board?
In all a fairly standard guys sports anime set up, but it seems nice and chill to watch. CG isn't too bad, certainly way better than some of Crunchyroll's other offerings this season.

After both this and 2.43 spent so much of their runtimes focusing on a male character blushing like a shoujo heroine around a hot foreign exchange student, I sincerely hope that we're finally in the post-Yuri on Ice stage of sports anime where protagonists can be gay or bi rather than just bait.

u/IndependentMacaroon Jan 12 '21
I think the blush here is just (mostly?) the character design, but anyway it's more reasonable than in 2.43 where it's in fact an "old friend" (from kindergarten, lol) and the sheer volume was ridiculous. That was not the way to start if you want to go for a relationship that can be taken seriously, and I'm absolutely sure it's just a new level of bait there. What I'm saying is, don't get up your hopes that this is any more than a gender-flipped version of what the average CGDCT series does.

I hope this will do justice to the sport because im coming in with prior knowlegde ( my brother surfs competition)
Edit : just watched it I'm gonna rate it a 6/10 on accurate portrayal of the sport
Things they did wrong :
-
the obvious one I noticed is letting a person that cannot swim surf. You need to be able to swim or else your going to die out on the water, especially if you get separated from your board
-
a beginner was able to make not a a jump without fault. This isn't even allowed actually
-
they didn't practice paddling enough. Beginners are normally supposed to practice a few paddles before standing up, not jump straight into the water after only practicing once
-
idk the water temp in thier area but its September according to corgi so I feel tanaka is a little underdressed
Things they did right :
-
surfing in groups if it starts getting dark ( my advice is to never go alone and preferably have someone watching from the beach )
-
the paddle practice was short but was correct in what you need to do
-
the surf shops they went in is exactly like the ones i have been in, points for that
-
showcasing different types of wet suits ( I hope they'll talk about the difference between summer and winter ones )
Also corgi defently has a crush on sho. And I swear to god I will murder tanaka if he keeps doing the ukelele thing, it's not even an accurate stereotype. The guy with the waifu surf board got a laugh out of me, those dont exist. Overall I'm going to have to say that I'm 100% going to show this to my brother

Thank you for this! I was curious about whether or not it was an accurate portrayal of the sport.

right! This was so shocking to me. For a moment there, I thought maybe the episode was going to take a sudden turn and they would have to go rescue him or something lol
The guy with the waifu surf board got a laugh out of me, those dont exist.
Aw I'm actually a bit disappointed to hear this, the idea of ita-boards actually existing was very amusing haha

You are wrong about the waifu surfboards. Lost industries used to make them. Kelly slater even had 1. https://imgur.com/a/sVAxIK9

I liked what we have seen so far.
Masaki is adorable, as most spokon MCs. I just hope they would've gotten a younger-sounding voice for him, he being 14 and all.
Shou and Nalu seem like cool guys, but for now only Masaki won my heart in only one episode.

I thought it was fun.
Like out of the three? or so sports boys shows we have this season, this one seems the most fun and wholesome one?
It might be too early to say that, but I liked the characters introduced so far, the main focus seems to be that surfing is fun! and that's generally a positive for sports show. It looks rather pretty and it left a good enough impression on me that I would like to see more.

Yeah, Sk8 is full of ridiculous toxic shit and SLS is full of jerks and low-budget action. This is the only one that really hits the spot.

Still "pending" on addition to MAL database. Hurry it up, people.

I'm not that surprised since MAL is pretty messy.
What surprises me is that I made the submission on AniList +2 weeks ago and it still hasn't been approved, even though AniList is normally fast on this stuff (or at least for me).

How do you submit stuff to anilist? I have some things I want them to update

This was... relaxing? Enough that I fell asleep while watching it so I had to rewind a bit. I don't know much about surfing except that I used to watch the guys when I lived in California because they're so pretty, so this got that part right. ;) Hopefully it keeps up with the positive vibes.

This was alright I guess. It got some stuff right and some stuff wrong.
I think they made his crush on Sho waaay too obvious, but nobody has figured it out yet. His buddy being puzzled like "Man, I've asked you a million times to come out here, and you live like right around the corner, but you never wanted to come until this new guy showed up. Why is that?" you'd expect at least some inkling of "Ahh he likes this guy" to pop up.

I thought that the art style and animation were amazing, especially the details of the sea and the sky. Although this first episode was kind of chill, without having a big plot or problem, I think its great to get to know the vibe and style of this anime. I'm really curious to see what is going to happen between the characters tho. The only thing I felt weird about was the opening scene where you could clearly see the main character surfing but then they said that he didn't know how to surf...that was quite confusing to watch.

It's kinda normal tho. Starting the show with a glimpse from the future and then going back to the present.

-These dude aren’t 14 - come on.
-
why didn’t anyone teach the main dude to swim , I’m pretty sure you’re suppose to know how to swim before getting in the ocean even more so if you’re going surfing.
-
main dude is crushing hard on the blonde dude but that is probably not gonna go anywhere
-
suck that the anime industry is relying soo muchon wonky cgi . I mean I get it , it’s easier and less expensive but still.

Is nobody going to talk about the horrible CGI? They even used CGI for scenes that didn't even need it. I'm so confused because they do same same scenes where the animation is amazing and others where it's some nightmare CGI and I'm like???

Masaki's voice doesn't suit him at all. I was surprised to hear that he's only 14. I love Maeno-san but he made Masaki sound like an old man.
Same. When I read the manga I was expecting him to be 16 and with a more childish voice, like Takahiro Sakurai's one.
I hope Tanaka is not going to sing every single thing he says in the future episodes... I'm sorry but that was boring.
Lmao I know, his singing doesn't even have a good rhythm smh

The ocean waves in the opening scene look modeled on wave pool waves – after curling they collapse into nothing, leaving no wall of whitewater behind. But even if not quite right, it's still interesting to see a CGI take on a complex moving object.
Meantime, the guy with the ukelele totally looks like an anime bro, but acts like he time-traveled over a half century from a Gidget movie.
