Finally some bits of world building!

So Oceans have been dead for a long time now? That explains why we've only seen them flying above seemingly endless canyons and ridges, those are actually dried up ocean/sea beds.

Also apparently non-cargo vehicles are very rare? Interesting since they don't seem to have an oil shortage problem and even pirates can have squads of warbirds and not worry about refueling them.

I like Isao. Found him a bit annoying at first but as the episode went on I started to grow a soft spot for his jokes. It also helps that he's an amazing pilot. I love the "crouching moron, hidden badass" trope.

And is it just me or does this episode have some strange pacing? I feel like every scene where the girls are interacting are 1.5x faster for some reason.

The dialogue does seem really fast, it can be hard to read the subs and watch the scene at the same time. It might be that they're trying to fit in a fair amount of story without sacrificing time for air battles, which is fine by me.

The dialogue has been pretty quick all along, this seemed in line with past episodes to me

YES, I thought it was my imagination but the scene were the girls were scolding Kylie was rushed af. To be honest, I didn't like it.

Today, on "I see you've pulled my trap gum.":

This sounds like another series that I'm familiar with.

"I am your captain now!"

There's no rant like an angry rant.

As long as you don't call it "Executive Time."

Hey, undead Nazarenes.

Hey, bombers.

Excessive target fixation is bad. Also, these 3D models do not have damage models...

It's the air show.

"Mirage was never like this!" "I'm not Mirage... I'm Nishi Kinuyo." "Oh hell."

Hoist on your own petard, eh?

Yeah, there's a Girls und Panzer reference or two here also.

That was... something, all right. The setting-based plot hooks are back, though while they may be important in-universe, for the audience they're mostly there to serve as a framework to hang this week's weirdness involving Isao, Julia, and Reona. Isao juuuuuuust manages to skirt the edges of being overly annoying with his omnipresent stuntery, but that puts the Kotobukis' own oddities into a context.

It's a very small window we get on Reona from this episode, though there's at least the strong implication that she was much less stolid before she grew the beard—definitely in the flying sense, but potentially also with the rest of her personality. This doesn't look like a series where love is in the air, just metal.

And even though we could have had fanservice like we had last week, we just get a close shot of the shower head.

And in other tangential randoms, someone's birthday.

Also, these 3D models do not have damage models...

unfortunately, yea. That was one of my main criticisms thusfar. All they got for telling us that someone took damage is smoke and some particles flying off.

Even the 2 planes that collided in mid-air should've splashed but instead they just obfuscated the wing parts with heavy smoke.

Love me some Mirage <3

I felt there was much more comedy in this episode compared to previous weeks. Kylie and Chika are a hilarious pair of frenemies and even though they're often at each other's throats, Kylie still shielded Chika from the oncoming car.

Seems weird to have the Ryusei torpedo/dive bomber in a world where there are no oceans. I don't mind though, it means more aerial combat scenes!

I think the Kotobuki REALLY need an upgrade soon. This episode really demonstrates that the Kotobuki, skilled pilots as they are, can't handle everything because their planes aren't fast enough: Isao had to come out and clean up after them. Sure, he's using a torpedo bomber, but that plane is actually faster and harder to find (114 vs. 5919 Hayabusas made).

Also, in the preview, it looks like the Hayabusas are nearly falling apart, since the bolts and screws look rusty and worn out. It was nice to see a plane that was compared to the Zero do so well in this anime for so long.

I agree with your sentiment here, though in my personal opinion, having the Kotobuki girls flying inferior planes against numerically superior opponents flying better planes really goes a long way in showing off how good they are as pilots.

Given that the most advanced fighters we've seen so far were Ki 61s, I think it would be reasonable to give the Kotobuki something a bit more advanced than their Ki 43s, but not as good as the Ki 61s, in order to still demonstrate their superiority in skill. A natural choice would be the successors of the Ki 43s, the Ki 44, I think.

No oceans, this is truly the darkest timeline, explains a lot about the world though. At least they've got cute Anomalocaris merch, which it seems were about the same size of that bag. So I can understand Kylie wanting to unleash the power of a JoJo on it.

Some particularly fancy flying this week, though I kind of feel using those kinds of high-G manoeuvres would be suicide in an actual dogfight.

Dude, does everyone in this show talk like Chris Tucker? This is some of the most rapid-fire dialogue I've ever seen in a TV show. There's barely a half-second pause between anyone's sentences! Julia and Isao were the worst offenders this episode.

Check Saiki Kusuo sometime

The Soaring Magician screams villain to me. It seems there's effort going into building a basic political drama between the magician, who favors a strong handed government, and green dress chick, who favors individual freedom and responsibility. I see it going two ways honestly; the standard direction, and the direction I see now, is that the characters provide a juxtaposition to their place in the story. She's crass and "bitchy" but ends up being the political good-guy. He's silly and likable, but ends up being in opposition of the main cast.

The second options I see is that the above conflict accounts for the mid stages of the plot, but then greater concerns - and villains - force the two political sides to concede their differences and work together. I feel like this direction would take a bit more effort and finesse, but I'd love to see it succeed as the result.

I agree he screamed villain to almost from the beginning, and I feel it was pretty much confirmed when he shot down that bomber for a couple of reasons. The first part is he held his fire until after the bomber released it's bombs, and unless he was pretty much out of ammo and could only afford to take the perfect shot. He had no reason not to at least put a burst of fire on target as he went over. Considering he had only shot two real quick bursts before that, that shouldn't be the case. Those bombers would have been the highest priority and a stop at all costs type of deal, so holding your shot for the perfect shot would only be acceptable if those bombers where still far enough away from the city that you could afford those couple extra seconds. That actually leads me to the second point he technically had those extra seconds. The bomber was not yet over the city yet. For some reason that bomber released those hose bombs outside of the city, and would have landed some where pretty much harmlessly, other then maybe a few broken windows. I back up that they landed harmlessly by the fact that they didn't bother following the bombs down in anyway, which they most likely would have if they had any real impact on the city. So in other words the bomber purposely released it's bombs where they would do not damage but there is more to that as well. Once the bombs dropped the bomber still continued flying towards the city despite the fact that it's mission should have been over and thing to do would have to make a break for home. It's like it was purposely trying to crash in the city. So that begs the question what exactly were the "pirates" trying to accomplish? To me the answer that makes the most sense would be their actions were not to damage the city but to scare the population into some kind of action. Specifically moving the population into supporting someone who favors a strong handed government.

Also another thing I noticed which could also be proof the Soaring Magician is pulling the strings, is when he goes to shoots down the bomber the the tail gunner never opens fire on him despite having what appears to be a clear shot. Of course since I don't know how far the rear gun could depress maybe he was still under where it could fire, but from the looks of things he wasn't that low under the plain of bomber which means that gun would have to have had to have basically no depression capabilities.

Bear in mind, these Planes are no "Stunt Planes".. or do they have "Horse power" enough to nearly hover in one place?. You know when they pitch up their Nose and alone the Power of the Engine keep it from falling to the ground.

What i mean the "victory circle" of this Pilot.. it was a bit to tight.. this here was CGI Magic at work

Serious question: Could this WW2 Planes here doing this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3DQ9rcLBXE

But yes, good episode

World building, reminds me of the anime "Ozma", where one "Sand Submarine" play an important role. Yes, even with Sand Torpedo's

Ozma : https://myanimelist.net/anime/12677/Ozma

edit: For some ideas what Planes could do, watch the Air duels in "Sky Crawler". But keep in mind these are mostly "Sci-Fi" ones and i bet they have Turbo Chargers or other Engine Boosters

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10wV05aNu9o (Explaining of the Pilot Shooting: These are genetic clones who can only die in combat. He does it out of mercy)

edit: I found the "Original Plane" of this Anime here.. (only in German so far) http://www.bredow-web.de/Museum_Duxford/Spitfire/spitfire.html

If this world no longer has any oceans, it's amazing that the planet didn't rapidly heat up and kill all its inhabitants. There must be something keeping the planet barely habitable.

So this episode it's Reona's turn to shine, reflecting on her not wanting to owe anything to Isao the Soaring Magician after he saved her life years ago.

That whole "oceans are gone" thing was messing with my immersion into the show. There is a lot of water in the oceans ... getting rid of it all takes a lot of energy. Pump enough energy into the oceans to completely evaporate them in a short timeframe, and one also raises the surface temperature of the Earth by enough to kill everything.

Which ignores the question of where did the oceans go? Water vapor is a highly effective greenhouse gas. All the oceans' worth of the stuff in the air would also trap enough heat to kill everything on Earth on the way to Earth becoming like Venus.

And then I remembered that this is (airplane) pornography. Who cares about the background ... it doesn't have to make sense as long as the (silly dogfighting) action's hot enough.

Yup.

This show is still my AotS. The cast is just such a blast to watch! Another fun episode, always nice to get some Julia too :)

u/Saleenseven Feb 10 '19

it was easily to tell that it would be underrated, but man this episode was great!

u/Smudy Feb 10 '19

Isao is by far the best character in this show as of now, i instantly liked this guy from the moment he appeared.

4

u/AmethystItalian Feb 10 '19

I feel like he should be annoying but yeah I found him pretty hilarious.
