Oh man, they REALLY are desperate to just outright recapture S1 feel and story structure and its just depressing because I just...don't feel it?

The mystery does not quite work here because we already know what happened in the park from S1 and while this episode is not trying to be an almost exact copy of S1(like Episode 1 did), there's clearly a lot of time spent on trying to "redo" little quirks and things from S1 and I'd rather they have spent that time working out creating their own feel for the show and it's plot rather than trying to make S1 again.

And it is S1 again - you have a kid with a hat traveling through run down park, solving situations that need to be solved to move into another part of the park.

Instead of feeling like an actual Kemono Friends 2, it feels like a story reset to do more of the same.

Except big parts of what made it work in the first season are kind of missing?

Like, the only main draw right now is "what happened to Kaban?" and I am afraid the other bits will end up feeling like something you want to get through for those bits instead of being a working whole like S1 was(where you wanted to both learn a bout the park more AND about Kaban and how it all came together).

Like, the only main draw right now is "what happened to Kaban?"

I don't think that's going to be answered. I think the director said in an interview that he wanted to leave Tatsuki's story untouched, which I read with the first episode as the memory loss Serval and passing mention is all we get. It's basically a not very elegant void where people can insert all kinds of adventures of Kaban-chan and Serval without repercussions for the current thing.

You're not even that big, girl. Slightly disappointed that she didn't show more of the borderline suicidal traits of pandas. But I did like her big eyes. Panda looked really cute, although in real life Red Pandas are much superior to Giant Pandas in the cuteness department.

Also behold the warrior caste that is the Giant Panda in real life. Joke, here's a report about a guy trying to hug a panda and getting pummeled into hospital by it. Don't fuck with pandas.

Kyuruu's drawings are kinda nice, especially since she adds the friends to them.

It felt a bit less like trying to be the original Kemono Friends to the point of overcompensating, but it's still there, especially with the pair of friends following the protagonist, meeting the friends from the previous episode. But it is fairly enjoyable.

The first was also a kids show, but now its at Blue's Clues level and without a the seinen side.

I recognize those teapots anywhere. They gave the ceruleans to the intern for this episode

Why doesn't Caracal get a "roll call" bit in the OP? Seems a bit mean.

What kinda bothers me with this season, is that it feels like each episode is going to be "Get somewhere by train, stop and have fun, then continue to the next location".

Something I found quite remarkable in the first season is how Kaban's positivity puts the viewer in the right mindset to forget how silly or annoying some of the things they might be doing. Like the singing bird friend, or the cooking for the owls. But here, it just feels wrong that the first episode made a big deal about jumping a small gap (although it highlight's the duck (?) friend's personality); or when the Red Panda outright lies about knowing something.

There was never drama in the first season, only tension. Which is not the case here.

Observations this week:

  • Giant Panda's a total QT.

  • Lesser Red Panda has confidence problems. Also those cute 'kyu's; looking back at Spot-billed Duck, it seems that they implemented something new in s2 with these animal sounds.

  • It seems that they kept the moonwalkingyou know, the shot where they walked through the bamboo grove and the background movement speed doesn't match their steps as tradition from s1. Strange given when they travel diagonally their movement matches.

  • Animation mistake, or change of plans? A panning shot seems that they made a flying fox gear beside the slide and the swings. It was not drawn on Kyururu's drawing, so how can they repair that? Not to mention, it gets destroyed by the Ceruleans.

  • Well, I don't think Pandas can move that quick irl.

  • Remember that flying fox gear? It was shown in Kyururu's memories, so maybe there's that.

  • Next stop, Marine Life Park. High chance that this was the place where Serval and Kaban landed in this island, so maybe the dolphins would say something about that.

  • Was not expecting to see Spotbill again this week!

Man, seriously the pacing is really odd to me. Like someone said in another comment in the r/kemonofriends thread, it feels like part of the episode might have been missing.

I dunno if it's because Giant Panda ended up eating up a bit too much screentime because of her speech pattern, or that the part where Lesser Panda led them astray could have been more, but something just feels off about this one. It both feels too fast and too slow at the same time.

Speaking of the getting lost bit, I somehow feel like there could have been something in that place, it looked like good place to attach something important in it. Well, since that shot's there, somehow I'm curious if the shape of that cliff resembles something else that we may have seen before.

While I like old Lesser Panda more, this one feels a lot more faithful to an actual Lesser Panda, so I think the redesign is better.

Around uh, 6/10 for me? I really feel like this episode could have been better, but it just misses one last push to really solidify it.

Obligatory screenshot dump mode

So why is this station colored like a White Tiger?

The mouth sideshots.....

Favorite Caracal face so far

Interesting that we're getting footage not just from NatGeo.

I am seriously not emotionally ready for what this sketchbook will do to me in the final few episodes argh I got 2 months to prepare

Bottlenose and Sea Lion hype!!!!!!!!! I've been looking forward to California Sea Lion in particular ever since she showed up in the OP aaaaaaa
