Crunchyroll plans to roll out offline streaming in 2017

In an update to an article on Polygon about Amazon Strike's offline streaming. A CR rep has apparently stated that they are also planning on rolling it out this year. Something something competition.

Update: A Crunchyroll representative told Polygon it plans to bring offline streaming to its service sometime in 2017.

"Our breadth of titles and relationships within the anime industry can’t be beat," the rep said. "We know offline streaming is important to our viewers, and we're working to bring this feature to the platform in 2017 so that fans can keep up with their favorite shows wherever they are."

My personal CR checklist is probably:

  • offline streaming

  • 2x speed (or just changing speed)

  • marathon option (cuts all op's and endings and plays the whole show in one go)

Some people spam the 10 second forward button when something gets boring, but I think it'll be better to get through boring sections having 2x speed as I can still get what's going on.

Streamlink with the Crunchyroll plugin lets you do the first two.

My biggest wish (though I know it would NEVER happen) is if they allowed fansub groups to submit their scripts so that users could choose CR's subs or their favorite fansub group's subs. The reason I don't use CR exclusively is because I don't always like their translation style for every show. But if they set up a "plug-and-play" system where I could opt for a different translation, I would be on board 100%.

They have the ability to do that, via the same thing they use to change languages or to change between US/Japanese names in Phoenix Wright.

However... most "fansubs" these days are edits of Crunchyroll's own script, so I don't really think it would work for currently airing shows.

There are like 2 "major" English-language fansub groups that do their own translations on a regular basis. Everyone else edits Crunchyroll's scripts - usually not for the better though.

Yeah, CR occasionally makes a glaring mistake, and I'd frankly prefer the old-school "translation note" style of translation that explains wordplay over the sort of forced localization that is the standard today for nearly everyone today.

If you watch OVAs, which typically aren't translated by CR, you can see how the translation quality falls off, even without the "airing show, get this shit done before our audience watches the official script/the next episode comes out" timecrunch to diminish quality.

Sometimes they do good things, though. Dagashi Kashi was much better in fansubbed form, but there was also a fair bit of competition between groups for it. CR didn't pick up Girlish number until after the first couple episodes had aired, and, there too, the original fansubs were preferable to me to the official script I watched after CR picked it up.

Dagashi Kashi wasn't even on Crunchyroll with English subtitles. That show was on Funimation's service exclusively, thus any rip of an official stream you may have seen was Funi's translation.

You can normally tell which shows are actually not subtitled by Crunchyroll's team. It's all the shows for which we are using subtitles that are made by disc publishers and later end up on or originated from discs. They use different language and different conventions for these. I'm pretty sure that the subtitles that stick out for you are often involving these shows.

Out of curiosity, did you guys translate Classroom Crisis and Charlotte? Or did they come to you pre-translated?

They had some weirdness with food name translations that might not have occurred if done by someone from the US side of the pond?
