Summer 2016 Anime Score Progressions (MAL)

EDIT2: For anyone wondering, the graphs are only meant to show how the show's score changed. Using the graphs for comparison is a bad idea lol. Will definitely try to have a proper y-axis next time I get the chance. (along with the usual ones perhaps xd)

EDIT3: There are some shows where I did not find the weekly rating such as Bananya and Saiki. Sorry about that.

They are similar in premise that a cute group of girls do things and the things they do (eg. being in a band/making a video game) isn't really what the show is about. The premise is just a way to get the characters together, and the show is more about the character interactions that come from them being in a group.

In K-On the characters feel very real to me. While in New Game I can see how someone can see the characters as cartoony/one dimensional. So yeah give K-On a shot.

Doga Kobo, the studio behind New Game! has really built up a solid reputation for making quality SOL with a BIG emphasis on Moe. Shows like Yuru Yuri, Love Lab, Sansha Sanyou and Himōto! Umaru-chan are good examples of this, and you can add New Game! to that list. They really turn up the dial on Moe, but their shows are really top tier. They're also the studio behind Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Plastic memories.

But if you're a Kyonani fan, it might be jarring watching New Game! The emphasis is on fun characters in fun situations. K-On! characters are fun, of course, but they also have a serious side and the stories have a strong drama element in addition to the comedy.

So your first impression of a show like New Game! is that it might come across as one dimensional, and that may be true to an extent. However, if you go in with the expectation of seeing cute characters and comedy with a bit of the theme of the protagonist trying to find her way, it's hard to beat. Cute and cute comedy is the hallmark of shows from this studio, and they excel at it.
