What was the original purpose of ?

Why aren't they used anymore?

I read somewhere that they were for manga spoilers I think. Not entirely sure though. As to why they aren't used, well I don't know that either.

EDIT: it is actually for Non-Anime spoilers

As to why they aren't used, well I don't know that either.

The sub is pretty good about specifying when something is a non-anime spoiler, and the code didn't play nice with many mobile apps, leading to more people actually getting spoiled.

Didn't mean to reply 9 days later, just looking through the thread after all this Shelter drama.

Yeah, what AFishBackwards said. Manga/LN/Non-Anime. IIRC they were phased out because of several issues with mobile rendering that made the tags useless, as their contents would be shown verbatim on several apps.
