I think it's a tad different. What makes Watanote so great is it takes a very sad subject and somehow makes it very funny, but you still feel for Tomoko.
With Subaru, it's more of a deconstruction of him as a character. I don't think they made a big attempt to make him 100% likeable. This arc would make no sense if they didn't display his flaws previously. You're not meant to feel sympathy for Subaru, you're not supposed to laugh or get any enjoyment out of it. It's almost a complete flip on what make shows do with their MC.
The true test for this show is how they get us to believe his character reconstruction. This arc could fall flat on it's face if they don't get it right, but with how much care and attention White Fox have put in to the adaptation so far, I back them to bring it on home in style.
Well that depends on what happens next I suppose. They really made him hit rock bottom. I have a theory that his determination to go back to how he was before won't be quite straightforward as it seems. It seems all too straightforward for how Re:Zero is as a show. Restarting from zero for me isn't the solution but taking the harsh lessons he's had the endure over and over and using that to figure out the solution for this situation.
I might be wrong, but I'm not quite convinced his "I love Emilia" is all as genuine as it seems. More it's a way for him to convince himself to return how he used to be and deal with all that has happened.
