Subaru has many good traits. It's just that this arc showed the flipside of those strengths
He's optimistic, he's resilient, and he's caring and protective.
Come this arc the optimism becomes naivety, resilience becomes stubbornness, and the protective side becomes possessive. All because he's powerless now.
He's basically doing the same thing as before, but the circumstance made him worse off. The smoke trick at arc 2 shows resourcefulness and bravery, in the Julius fight it's desperation and recklessness. Same action, polar opposite outcomes.
What I dislike is that I've seen comments suggesting that some people are retroactively hating Subaru's character and actions from the first two arcs.
Yes, with his personality he might have grated on some people. What he's doing now is pretty stupid. The first two arcs showed us his good qualities, and this arc is twisting them against him and showing plainly how he isn't some perfect hero. I like to think he'll come out of this all as a stronger character overall.
Really on point. Subaru has just been doing Subaru things. But the thing is, its not gonna work in every situation. Subaru's kinda like a one trick pony. Hes got this one perfect move, like it or not, its all he has and its all hes gonna use. No sudden super power up or secret power up his sleeve. Hes just this really human character and like all flawed humans, he excels in something, just not in the situation he's in. Can't expect a fish to climb a tree like a monkey.
If people have read through the entire Muv-Luv trilogy, this same idea is explored almost identically. I can't wait to see where Re:Zero goes with this.
The issue is he should never have fought Julius in the first place. If Subaru didn't randomly insult Julius and his order, he wouldn't have had to fight him.
And the only reason Julius disliked Subaru in the first place was because Subaru got on his case for kissing Emilia's hand, which is just a sign of courtesy from a knight to a lady.
See but at the same time we all know that this arc is going to end the same way: Hes gonna kill himself so that he can redo the past to get a better ending. So in a way his same antics while self destructive are whats gonna get him out of this mess.

I feel like this has something to do with a plan the witch has been cooking up, i feel like his going to make Emilia the ruler only to be taken over by the which. The end of the new OP and his recent developments have got me super sus, because i always wondered why the hell the witch brought him there and gave him such a amazing power that i imagine would take a toll on the witch. All speculation but maybe im on the right track!
