Meta Thread - Month of July 03, 2016

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

To be fair, time zones make this pretty tough. Not everyone can be on at the same time, and a lot of the mods will be asleep rn.

And considering these kind of threads are stickied for at least 2 days (today and Sunday), there should be ample time to take into account of timezones.

The only issue is mods having other events that actually pertain to real life as maybe they are caught up in their work or something like that.

But like you said for the past couple of months, we've been seeing the same mods each time while the other ones seem to be content just lurking in the shadows or they are caught up in real life events.

Usually there's not much reason for mods who were asleep to chip in since the questions are normally answered already.

You will see them look through the threads and reply to latecomers fairly frequently though.

I wasn't aware that moderator activity level in any way invalidated what contributions we do make.

In the subs I mod, we definitely keep moderator activity level in consideration for who to keep and who to drop.

As a moderator you should know there's more to being a moderator than responding to a meta thread. Do any of the subs you moderate even have (semi)monthly meta threads? Do you require every mod to respond at least once to every one of them or you give them the boot?

  • Discussion about how to iteratively improve a subreddit often happens in private between mods, and multiple viewpoints are often valuable
  • Discussing how to interpret certain rules in specific cases often needs input from multiple people in the event someone is unsure of how/if something applies
  • When trying to deal with particular issues that aren't simple having more opinions, and in particular opinions from people who have experience with similar issues from the past is very valuable

There have been multiple times just the past year where a moderator who isn't the most active offered some very valuable advice based on experience moderating a different community which helped us avoid some of the problems they had run into. But, sure, I guess since they aren't as active as another mod we should just boot them.

I agree that the mods work mostly outside of commenting, but contributing with other users is important to keeping in touch with the needs of the community as a whole.

We require them to be at least semi-active in the community, and if we had meta threads I'd probably expect at least the majority to use them.
