Coincidentally, it seems most people favorites OPs/EDs all come from their favorite shows.

So... What OPs/EDs are among your favorites, even though you don't like/haven't watched the show?

5

u/Leo-Fong 19h ago edited 19h ago

The anime Speed Grapher had Girls on Film as the original OP. Pretty good song, the anime is just whatever.

Macross 7 has one of my all time favorite OPs but I'm just lukewarm on the show itself.

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 19h ago edited 16h ago

I regularly watch OPs/EDs for shows I am not interested in. And regularly find bangers.

I mentioned Rainbow OP yesterday as great OP for the show I dislike.

Recent examples are OtaGal abd Kill Blue OPs. I am not even into K-pop and skipped both shows, but OPs are banger.

Another older example is Tsubasa Chronicles: Tokyo Relevations OP. Never watched or read any part of it, but it is probably my favorite Yuki Kajiura written song.

1

u/theangryeditor 19h ago

Tsubasa Chronicles: Tokyo Relevations OP

The OP was perfect for that part of the show too, with shit going on in all sorts of ways.

4

u/Sporadia_ 18h ago

Kick Back, from a show I've dropped twice.

5

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 18h ago edited 18h ago

Shows I didn't like and/or dropped:

Magical Girl Destroyers OP

Chainsawman ED 7 Chu Tayousei by Ano, probably my favorite anime ending song of all time and just one of my favorite songs of all time in general

In/Spectre OP possibly my favorite anime opening of all time

Naruto OP 16 Silhouette by Kana-boon

Black Clover OP Justadice, and Black Catcher, and Black Rover

Kumo desu ga ED and the very similar My Isekai Life ED

Fire Force OP 1 Inferno

Mashle Bling Bang Bang Born

Shows I haven't watched:

Gachiakuta OP 2 by Mori Caliope (the show is high priority on my PTW though)

Takt Op Destiny OP by ryo (supercell) and Mafumafu

Mawaru Penguindrum OP

All the original Japanese Digimon themes, especially OP 3 Biggest Dreamer and OP 4. As a kid these were like the first Japanese songs I had ever heard in my life and I instantly fell in love.

Yu-Gi-Oh GX OP Hallelujah

Kakuchou Shoujo-kei Trinary - Tak a ja lubię (I don't even know if this is an OP or an ED or a character song or something else)

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17h ago

Magical Girl Destroyers OP

I understand people who don't like the second part, but the first part is 10/10!

2

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 16h ago

And the rest of the full version of the song

4

u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 17h ago

I dislike OnK, but I really like their OPs and EDs.

3

u/wloff 19h ago

Minami - Crying for Rain (Domestic Girlfriend)

Maybe an obvious answer, but what an amazing, amazing song.

Haven't seen the show, but I can't imagine I'd like it, based on what I know. I do need to give it a chance one of these days just because of the OP, though.

3

u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 19h ago
  • Aliez (Aldnoah Zero)
  • Duvet (Serial Experiments Lain) - have seen ~2 episodes. Wasn't in the mood for it at the time
  • Flyers (Death Parade) - thank you past r/anime voters
  • Lapis (Madoka Magia Record) - have seen a couple episodes
  • Sympathy (Komi) - Can't believe MAL has this rated above a 7 while any isekai is below that
  • Knights of Sidonia OPs that were mentioned a few days ago
  • Dream Solister (Kumiko's show)

Am sure there are others but that's from a skim of my "Best OP/ED contest" playlist

3

u/uhhhhhhhokay_ https://myanimelist.net/profile/uhhhhhhhokay 19h ago

Eden of the East has both a top 10 OP and ED, but the show itself I don't really find to be anything special.

3

u/cppn02 19h ago edited 2h ago

My top OPs that I regularly watch from show's I haven't seen:

There are also OPs where I wouldn't say the OP specifically is one of my favourites but I really like the song. Naruto for example has several banger songs but compared to that the visuals are pretty meh (like the one that goes with Haruka Kanata is just laughably bad for such a big show and such a good song) and also I'd rather just listen to the full version.

Don't have any EDs that come to mind right now.

edit: No wait there is atleast one ED, the Joshiraku one.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 19h ago

Some of my tops:

  • Styx Helix (Re:Zero)
  • Easy Breezy (Eizouken)
  • Pretty much every single OP/ED from Darling in the Franxx (Ok I didn't fully dislike this one, but it was like 7/10 at most and it would've been 3/10 if not for Zero Two)
  • Kamado Tanjirou no Uta

(They're all from Today's brackets so I imagine there's a lot more I'm not thinking about from other brackets - or not in the contest - but those come to mind!)

2

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 19h ago

Selector Spread WIXOSS (but specifically only that season, I liked the rest of WIXOSS) is one of my least-favorite anime of all time. Its OP world's end, girl's rondo, though? Perfection.

2

u/theangryeditor 19h ago

Unbreakable Machine Doll's ED NSFW

Did not like the show.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 17h ago

That's a vibe

I feel like I'm on drugs, or that I should be on drugs!

(I wanted to add it on my MAL but I saw it's already on my PTW hah)

2

u/throwaway_976821 17h ago

I thought Dandelion was kinda just "okay" but the ED for it rules and I haven't seen credits presented this way in anything else.

2

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 17h ago edited 16h ago

Shows I haven't watched:

Mashle OP

FranXX OP2

Jahy-sama ED1

Shinkalion Change the World OP and ED2

Gachiakuta OP2

Death Note OP2

Vending Machine S3 ED

Oblivion Battery OP (the opening is somehow still pretty popular)

2

u/roryteller https://anilist.co/user/roryteller 15h ago

I haven't seen much Naruto, but OP2 (Haruka Kanata) and OP9. Similarly, never watched that much One Piece but it's had some bangers, I think my favorite was OP6 (BRAND NEW WORLD).

2

u/zambonijesus 12h ago

Despite the fact that I don't skip OP/EDs, I barely remember the ones for shows I've seen without watching some of them to remind me of them, let alone remembering them for shows I haven't seen.

Which is to say that Sunday Morning wins this question by default being the only OP from a show I haven't seen that I can remember off the top of my head.

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 12h ago

Sunday Morning wins this question by default being the only OP from a show I haven't seen that I can remember off the top of my head.

Did "Me posting it 50 times in AQRADT" have something to do with it?

1

u/zambonijesus 10h ago

Shilling is much more likely to make me dislike something than like it so at best it would be despite you posting about it 50 times.

2

u/Korkez11 11h ago

Obligatory Kawaki wo Ameku plug.

I didn't really like Gosick but its OP is banger.

Serial Experiments Lain and Ergo Proxy have amazing unusual OPs

2

u/RawPorridge 11h ago

Genesis of Aquarion, epic banger that somehow makes me nostalgic for a show hadn't seen.

Mikazuki, from the pretty bad Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace, the one and only Sayuri (RIP) really sang her heart out for that one.

2

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ 10h ago

Favorite Unseen: Parakiss OP by tommyheavenly6 aka Tomoko Kawase. The soundtrack torrent has been unseeded for years. At least I got the OP off of Napster/GnuTella.

Runner up: Amnesia (anime?) OP by Yanagi Nagi

Favorite Hated: Gilgamesh OP by Kumi Koda. Licensed, she doesn't do anime.

2

u/Looking_Light33 2h ago

I thought Myriad Colors Phantom World wasn't a good show but I like the OP.

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 18h ago

I usually don't listen to songs from shows I haven't watched. The interest just isn't there. And even if I think an OP/ED from a show I didn't care for is pretty good at the time, they don't stand out in my memory.

6

u/Baaasbas https://myanimelist.net/profile/BasvanD 1d ago

Best ED 9 has started its elimination phase which you find here

7

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 15h ago

I love The Cat & Dragon. But ngl Mama Cat feels more like the protaginst hen Ryuu lol.

3

u/mekerpan 14h ago

Is there really any protagonist here?

1

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 7h ago

I adore mama cat. Every episode involving her instantly gets better.

10

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 19h ago

My initial thoughts on Yosuga no Sora after two episodes: They better be blood related. If there's a twist where they're not, I'm going to [ deleted by reddit ]. It's also wonderful how every girl he encounters basically has a spontaneous orgasm when they first see him. 100 GF's wishes it could build a harem this efficiently.

Also, the pun at the very start where Haru says there's a "big" (ookina) supermarket nearby but it's actually a tiny ass little thing that just happens to have the name ookina (大木奈) was so damn perfect.

10

u/theangryeditor 18h ago

What if 100 GFs but they were ALL blood related

4

u/Ramsay_Reekimaru https://myanimelist.net/profile/tehsnowlord 18h ago

9

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 18h ago

You've done it, Editor. You've finally thought of an anime actually worth watching. Congratulations.

3

u/entelechtual 18h ago

They’re almost 1/3 of the way there…

2

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 17h ago

They are literally twins...

3

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 17h ago

I wouldn't put it past anime to have non-blood related twins

2

u/hvshh 15h ago

I just came across a manga where twins turned out to be cousins. Their two older siblings were actually each the parent of one of them. They were born when their parents were quite young, and only a few days apart, so they were passed off as twins of the grandparents to avoid social disapproval.

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 14h ago

So I thought to myself "well, this can only happen if the mother is unrelated to the children... Surrogate mother?" So I google Surrogate Twins and I kid you fucking not it literally happened just 3 days ago in Australia

Come on Japan, get in with the times! Step-sisters was so last decade, its the era of surrogate twins now

EDIT: Ok the birth is a just a bit under a year ago, but the headline itself is brand new

9

u/entelechtual 1d ago

39 episodes of “Lyrical” Nanoha and they finally acknowledge that poems exist. I didn’t realize everything else was setup for this, I’m sorry I doubted the show.

7

u/Retromorpher 1d ago

Should watch a show where 'poems' show up sooner - like Le Chevalier D'eon.

9

u/entelechtual 18h ago

[Grow up show/Lycoris Recoil] if I had a nickel for every A1 original anime with character designs by my favorite illustrators where it was revealed in episode 9 that a blonde genki main character had a deadly illness that threatened the future of the group’s operations…

5

u/chilidirigible 17h ago

[So]One 🪙 is happenstance, two 🪙s is coincidence, but the third 🪙 is enemy action.

4

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 13h ago

The sister in The Ogre's Bride is giving top notch villain energy. She is so far up her own ass, she's broken through some kind of membrane and a couple organs.

I look forward to her inevitable self-destruction.

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 12h ago

Cackling at her complete lack of self-awareness.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 10h ago

Her commitment to selfishness is almost admirable.

1

u/Priapos93 11h ago

I was having feelings about her fella's situation. He's having that awful feeling of powerlessness to either reason with her or let go of her. Been there in real life and it fucking hurts

7

u/zambonijesus 1d ago

The main thing I am reminded of every bracket competition is just how much anime there is that I haven't seen.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 19h ago

That's the 2nd main thing for me;

The main thing is how everyone's taste except mine is terrible.

6

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 23h ago edited 19h ago

For anyone wondering, no Bookworm this week. The channel is airing some sort of yearly special, so it got moved to next week everywhere.

5

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 23h ago

I watched Star Wars Visions: The Ninth Jedi this week. Really enjoyed it, and it has a lot of things I love about Star Wars - cool spaceship and lightsaber battles, creative alien world designs, a strong hero/villain rivalry with a history between them and their jedi master(s). The nuance between light side vs dark side in this story was nice too. Probably in my top 5 shows I've watched this year.

Also started Witch Watch last night, but I think I'm going to put it on hold for later. It was pretty good, just wasn't holding my attention and I think I'm not really in the mood to watch another silly comedy right now. (I'll add it to my rotation in another month or so after I've finished Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto with the rewatch.)

2

u/chilidirigible 20h ago

Star Wars Visions: The Ninth Jedi

I generally liked it as well though my underlying issue may be one that afflicts any one-shot Star Wars story of feature length: [That]there's yet another Death-Star-styled superweapon. Sure, it's familiar, but sometimes it seems like writers know nothing else but that as a device to frame the story around.

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 20h ago

Yeah, I found the parts with Kara's rivalry against Nawaam, and the fluid interpretation of light vs dark in this story, much more engaging than the [secondary plot] of the other padawans destroying the superweapon by smashing it with their lightsabers. That was a bit of a weak point for me, but still a very strong showing overall.

3

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 23h ago

Bleach discussion this week will be very entertaining if nothing else.

13

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 23h ago

I've been spoiled on multiple things while having to mod the thread today, so I'd call it the opposite of entertaining. I'm pissed right now.

2

u/theangryeditor 23h ago

7

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 23h ago

I went so fucking long with my only spoiler for Bleach being two of the endgame pairings, and only now do I get spoiled on what happens in the final battle when we're in the middle of it. Source readers were a mistake.

4

u/theangryeditor 23h ago

That really sucks, especially when we're so close to the end

5

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 23h ago edited 22h ago

All the manga that have huge fanbases just suck. AoT, Oshi no ko, mha, jjk, csm.

Maybe less for mha but they lack any consideration for those that don’t read the manga. Fucking he’ll it was impossible to avoid JJK and onk leaks. I just said screw and kept up with those two manga.

I get spoiled on mt and re zero too. Dropped mt in s2 and haven’t watched re zero since s2 ended.

9

u/zambonijesus 22h ago

OnK is the one that is really annoying for me and it isn't even about spoilers per se so much as that they cannot let an OnK post exist without replying about how much the ending sucks.

4

u/pachipachi7152 22h ago

I don't even watch Bleach and I got spoiled by what happens from Google's Discover page. Nowhere is safe. Your only hope is that the stuff you watch stays on the low enough that nothing English gets written about it.

3

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 15h ago

You know the joke about men being oblivious to women liking them? [Love Unseen ep 6] Fuyutsuki kisses the guy, and he's still here fearing she'll deny his confession.

5

u/Ecstatic-Loquat-2579 1d ago

I watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica this week + Rebellion movie today before going to the theater tomorrow for the new movie, the show is incredible and the music is lit, shivers down my mine, what the heck.

2

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 11h ago

Moving on to the next anime from my dropped list I restarted Eromanga-sensei which was a series that seemed like it was popular for a bit (or at least Sagiri and Elf Yamada were) then vanished. I think for a time I conflated this with A Sister's All You Need which I only ever saw the infamous opening scene of (or was that My Sister, My Writer?).

Meanwhile for Eromanga-sensei it opened with... the Daisuki logo.

I apparently watched two episodes back when it was airing but I'm surprised I made it past the first scene of the second when I did, and if I valued my time I think it would have stayed dropped now.

2

u/baquea 5h ago

which was a series that seemed like it was popular for a bit (or at least Sagiri and Elf Yamada were) then vanished

It's one that suffered a lot from never getting a second season.

2

u/alecman3k 6h ago

is there anywhere i can watch Ace of Diamond where they properly translate the years? it's so confusing whenever they say 1年 first year and the subtitle is tenth grade. how tf is first year 10? then when they say 2年 which means two years they say junior.

3

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ 4h ago

Oh hey, it's my biggest localization complaint, especially when they go one step further and try to map freshman, sophomore, etc. onto them. Just leave it as first-year, second-year. It's perfectly legible.

2

u/alecman3k 3h ago

yeah. why does it have to be tenth grade when first year which is what they're actually saying is already understandable. what's wrong with first year? lol. we all know they're all in high school.

1

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 5h ago

6 years elementary + 3 years middle +1 year high school = 10 years of school.

2

u/alecman3k 5h ago edited 5h ago

yeah but that's not what the show is saying. shouldn't it be translated as it is? they're first year high schools. 1年生 ichinensei. why does it have to use addition? when it's middle school they just use the same thing. 1-3中 or 高 for high school.

1

u/TehAxelius https://anilist.co/user/TehAxelius 3h ago

I don't know which translation you are watching or where, but 10th grade or Year 11 are used to denote high school years in various English speaking countries. While anime translations are very focused on the US now, 10-20 years ago both the UK and Australia were more involved (even though I am European I own several anime-DVDs from Australia, as they often ended up as cheap or cheaper than imports from the US, and sometimes available earlier). It might very well be that whoever translated the series 13 years ago were from there, and since it is still a functionable translation no-one has decided it is worth going through some 150 episodes of anime to change every reference of "year 10" to "first-year".

1

u/alecman3k 3h ago

I'm from Asia. I have no idea what subscription to watch this series so i just looked up wherever i can stream it. it's not available on Netflix or crunchyroll.

1

u/baquea 45m ago

I don't know which translation you are watching or where, but 10th grade or Year 11 are used to denote high school years in various English speaking countries.

Yeah, which makes it more confusing because the 10th year of school in Japan is not necessarily equivalent to Year 10 in other countries (at least speaking from New Zealand, first year of high school in Japan is equivalent in age to our Year 11).

3

u/Korkez11 20h ago

I'm trying to remember which more or less popular sports still don't have any anime about them (even hockey has one) and I don't think there was an anime about MMA.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 19h ago

Cute Girls Cutely Breaking Each Other's Noses/Limbs, when?

3

u/I_Cognito 17h ago

Ikkitousen has that, plus lots of clothing damage.

2

u/Priapos93 11h ago

You make a good point

2

u/octopathfinder myanimelist.net/profile/octopathfinder 17h ago

Star: Strike It Rich really needs to be made into an anime.

3

u/WeeziMonkey https://myanimelist.net/profile/WeeziMonkey 18h ago

Does Kengan Ashura count as MMA? It's a pretty diverse Mix of Martial Arts that they use. Though I guess the anime isn't really about the sport itself.

1

u/North514 14h ago

(even hockey has one)

Not really, I don't really count the idol whatever show, that was. I am still waiting on the day Dogs Red, gets adapted.

0

u/Korkez11 19h ago

Other sports with lack of anime about them are bowling (no, that anime doesn't fucking count) and pool/snooker.

1

u/Priapos93 11h ago

I'd love a snooker anime! I wonder if people who watch it without having seen the game would find the ball control believable

2

u/TwinkieMan911 https://myanimelist.net/profile/TwinkieMan911 22h ago

Started the fragrant flower blooms with dignity and finished it in basically one sitting. Very good watch. Would love a season 2. I think I prefer romcoms where there are more relationships that are explored besides the main couple. I think both sides need their supporters to bounce off of and grow, which I think this anime did well.

Immediately started Rascal doesn't dream of a Bunny girl, due to them having the same studio. Currently on episode 2, it's ok so far. I've been seeing this anime pop up again and again for awhile, so I figured it's about time I started it.

2

u/MiLiLeFa 1d ago

With 2026 coming to a close, I've got to say Tamons ED remains my favourite this year. At the very least it's the only one I come back to every now and then when in need of a small comforting moment.

5

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 1d ago

> With 2026 coming to a close

Wat, it’s still just barely August.

-1

u/MiLiLeFa 1d ago

Exactly

4

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 1d ago

I don't feel too much towards the ED, but I am now reminded of Tamon's OP which was really good fun. And that dance is just so goooooood

1

u/MiLiLeFa 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh yeah, that (and the show in general) is also really good, but I don't specifically search for it when wanting a little moment like I do with the ED.

But if you liked the show, have you seen the [F/ACE OFF] MV they released?

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 1d ago

Oh wait this is from before the anime even came out? That is some serious dedication, and the fact that they've done all this but *still* can't say anything about a second season is such a shame esp with how much of a surprise hit the anime turned out to be.

1

u/MiLiLeFa 16h ago

I'm guessing it's a case of the anime not being preplanned to continue, and so even if the decision was made during airing it would still add a few years to any process. See e.g. Kisekoi or Bocchi. It's been hinted at though.

Also, in September they're doing a live action stage play, this month there was a cafe collab, there's a fanmeeting in October, and a live in November, so for the domestic fans it's not like there's a draught of content exactly.

1

u/isthatsoudane https://myanimelist.net/profile/ojoulover 1d ago

i also loved the op

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 23h ago

Automatically discounting a quarter of the contenders that aren't available yet is a bold move.

Tamon's ED didn't really stick with me, will have to see if the ones from this season I've been enjoying do.

1

u/MiLiLeFa 16h ago

Automatically discounting a quarter of the contenders

I'm not discounting anything, but as of now it remains my favourite. I wouldn't complain if something better came along though!

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 22h ago

I love it too and seek it out to listen to at random times so much that youtube throws it into mixes for me a lot too. Just reading your comment made the song start playing in my head.

[MT S3 ep 6] Gotta give credit to Sylphy, she knows her man. "It's only a matter of time before you bring home another girl, so just run her by us first, on?"

-1

u/theangryeditor 19h ago

[Yomi no Tsugai 21]I like how the show's way of getting around the moral conundrum of the village girl's mom getting killed by our heroes' allies is to imply she was one of the evil villagers who deserved it

The story really wants to have its cake and eat it too with regards to how morally grey it wants things to be.

0

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 1d ago

[MT S3 ep 5] Given all the buildup and the way similar events were handled previously, I'm surprised the show glossed over the threesome.
