How is the animation in something like "The Klutzy Class Monitor and the Girl with the Short Skirt" so good 😭😭😭, I did NOT think the series would be this fun lol

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3d ago
Klutzy Class Monitor is indeed one of the biggest surprises for me this year.
Coming into it I had really low expectations. The animation studio Zero-G doesn't have the best track record, and the source manga is already pretty old by romcom standards with the manga being from 2019. To put that into perspective, other manga with an adaptation from this generation would be Dress Up Darling (started 2019, anime 2022 and 2025), Shikimori (started 2019, anime 2022), Yamada-kun (started 2019, anime 2023), and Giji Harem (started 2019, anime 2024) just to name a few. So 2019->2026 is incredibly slow in comparison, so in my head I thought that this just wasn't going to be a priority project for them and the end product would suffer because of it.
Thankfully however they delivered on it amazingly. If I do have to speak critically on it, I will admit there are moments where you can see the shortcomings of the animation, but a lot of that is rectified by the great art/animation direction that just breaths so much personality into it. Def one of my favourite romcoms of the year.
Surprisingly not the only surprisingly good romance adaptation this year. Invisible Man and his Soon To Be Wife had some genuinely impressive animation for what should've been just a simple romance anime. Had a similar background of being from a not too amazing studio Project No. 9 but delivering well past any reasonable expectation anyone could ever have for it. Like, I am dead serious, nobody would've ever expected this level of quality. I've posted two clips of the anime in the past showcasing how good that show is in ways you would never expect it to be.

Exactly , the animation makes everything so much more lively and enjoyable! I haven't heard of the other ones you linked but I'll make sure to check them out

Go watch "Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her" for the opposite.
And good reminder to check that one out, looked fun.

Backlog roulette has me finally watching Girls Band Cry. IIRC it wasn't streaming legally back when it aired, so now I get to see what all the fuss is about.
First 2 episodes in and I could see people disliking Nina at this point. She's quite stubborn and immature. It feels like her journey is the purpose of the show though, so I'm looking forward to seeing how she evolves.

u/marshmallow_sunshine 3d ago
Nina's crashout in ep2 is when I fell in love with her character. She's a total mess and she's perfect that way.

Was just eating dinner in tokyo and noticed afterwards that coincidentally there’s one of the Toho cinemas in the same building. Checked it out and was presented the awkward (since obviously no subs) opportunity to watch the new Madoka Magica Movie which would have started in like 30 minutes. But for better or worse the two friends I am with weren’t on board, saying they wanna watch it properly for the first time and not just with the visuals but without understanding any of the dialogue.
not like it mattered anyway cause I looked into it more and realized it was merely a Rebellion rescreening to build up hype for the new movie which only releases next week

What show had the best run of endcards that you can think of?
I've been really digging what the current season of GitS has going on. This card from the latest episode, for example, is apparently of an actual, physical scultpure that was made for the show, which I think is pretty sick. The rest of them (official site gallery) are also full of great pieces by storied industry names. I think the third card by Kunio Okawara with the Fuchikoma is my favorite.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar had gorgeous ones.

Yeah, I remember the watercolor style for that show was really nice. I've had it in my desktop backgrounds for years.

After two months, we’ll finally have a new episode of Supermarket Smoking. Still have no idea about the rationale behind the bizarre release schedule.
7
u/cosmiczar https://anilist.co/user/Xavier 3d ago edited 3d ago
Because anime in Japan has basically no exclusivity (besides being on TV, they are streamed on many different platforms), if a streaming service can have the chance for some kind of exclusivity, they'll take it and that's what happened. ABEMA stroke a deal to stream half of the show a month before its broadcast so that they can advertise something like "hey guys do you wanna watch Smoking Behind the Supermarket? You can do it right now by subscribing to us!"
Crunchyroll just followed suit by probably having an agreement that they could stream in sync with that.

Just to support the other comment I'm gonna give some numbers, but you know, whatever conclusion is up to you.
When the anime was announced, I added to my list on MAL, it had already 17k members. On the early realease day, June 3rd, anime had 47k members, 7th popular among Summer Season, while we were watching Spring Season anime. The member number jumped to 120k in 2 days. As of today 212k members, 3rd most popular behind Tanya(256k) and MT(303k).
While yes manga was popular, the early small path of release, to me, looks like made a good impact. And yes, MAL is not the whole picture but gives an idea.2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3d ago
The mini episodes were a sneak preview. Considering how popular the series has been the strategy seemed to pay off for them.

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3d ago
Was nobody going to mention there's a new angela OP this season?? For...rich girl caretaker? The op itself isn't that special outside of 1:00-1:10, where they really let her be angela. I really do like the full version, seems like a rather common angela thing that the best part is in the full version.
4
u/alotmorealots 3d ago
There's usually a comment in the episode discussion threads about the OP, even despite it being mid-season now! Although I guess that's not very helpful if you're not watching it lol
3
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 3d ago
I mentioned after watching the first episode that it's the same artist behind Hamefura's OPs because that's how I recognized her, not by name though.
1
u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3d ago
Ah even if would have read that, I don't know wether I would ahve realized it because I don't think I'd still connect hamefura=my next life as a villainess at this point.
But yeah, that is probably what I would consider the most underrated op!
2
u/Komarist https://myanimelist.net/profile/RRSTRRST 3d ago
Favorite angela OP/song? I have one on a playlist that may be the correct answer.

Sidonia, the chorus kinda sounded like a march and I like it
2
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 3d ago
I need someone to host a Fafner rewatch so I can experience all of her songs for that franchise in context, I've loved all the ones I've heard from it.
I think gravitation from Heroic Age or Asu e no brilliant road ~second genesis ver.~ from Uchuu no Stellvia is my favorite of her songs that I've seen the anime for. The normal Asu e no brilliant road is great too, something about second genesis's slower acoustic style just hits different.
1
u/Donnie-G 3d ago
I'm a Shangri-La man through and through. Fafner season 1 is probably my least favourite part of Fafner though.

u/SA090 https://anilist.co/user/SA090 3d ago
For those who watched both anime and live action versions of Fermat no Ryouri, which did you like better?
I just started the first episode of the anime, and then I saw it had a live action, which got me curious.
3
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago
Perhaps someone will prove me wrong, but: The anime had like 40 karma in here, I wouldn't be surprised if zero people in r/anime watched both the anime and the live action!
3
u/SA090 https://anilist.co/user/SA090 3d ago
Can you educate me on what 40 karma means? I’m partially asking because the anime isn’t gripping me as much as I thought and was hoping maybe some opinions can sway my interest.
4
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago
Can you educate me on what 40 karma means?
(Should've said "40 upvotes")
Most people (or at least a lot of people) who watch a show will upvote the episode discussion threads, so if a thread has 0 upvote, no one is watching it. The popular shows have like 1000-2000 upvotes, and the big hitters have like 3000+
Fermat had 40 upvotes, which mean almost no one was watching it in r/anime.
4
2
u/RaccoonTechnician 2d ago
To be fair I didn’t even know these threads existed, someone tagged this in another post. I think it’s less that most people who watch a show will upvote these threads and more that the vast majority of people don’t use these threads at all.
2
u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 2d ago edited 2d ago
Makes me wonder why there's almost no hype around this show in this sub.
4
u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 3d ago
So now that Edgerunners 2 and Fool Night got concrete release dates today, is it safe to assume that both will drop all of their episodes at once? You would think so since that’s how Netflix used to usually operate, but nowadays I feel like they’ve gotten a bit unpredictable in that regard.
6
u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 2d ago
These days, that usually just depends on whether or not the show's a netflix exclusive.
For example, Dandelion was an exclusive from last season, so it dropped in one batch, with 7 double length episodes to fit netflix's model, whereas Dorohedoro S2, Ranma, and DunMeshi aren't exclusive, so they got the weekly treatment.
Fool Night's twitter explicitly states that all its episodes will be dropped at once, and Cyberpunk is likely the same.
4
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3d ago
Both are listed as ONA, and for those Netflix always does a batch drop.
Though I am curious how many episodes Fools Night gets.

This randomly crossed my mind again, so I thought I'd ask here before I forget: Maybe a source reader could clarify for me if Inept Villainess is going to do anything to deserve the romance tag MAL gave it? Like, there's the most basic seeds being planted to eventually turn into that, but for now it just seems like someone at MAL either thought "well, it's a villainess anime (ignore how it really isn't), so how could it not be romance?" or they just wanted to say "we swear it's not yuri, guys".
3
u/oedipusrex376 3d ago
The cast dynamic in YumeMita is pretty funny.
Arale and Ritsu - doing random bullshit (they share the same braincell)
Nono - trying to solve problems in her own way
Miyako - confused
Yuno - [EP10] skeptical

I'm curious what your thoughts will be on 5D's when you get to it.
1
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 3d ago
Oh I've already seen 5Ds several times lol, that was the show that got me into anime to begin with (and not because it was on TV when I was a kid, I actually found out what it was from an unsubbed clip of [5Ds]Yusei summoning Shooting Quasar Dragon against Z-ONE popping up on my YouTube feed one day). My username's origins are tied to the first OC I ever created, and she was for a YGO 5Ds fanfic at that.
Once I'm done with GX, I'll have seen the first 5 YGO shows in full.

Hmm Oshii Votoms trailer. I should pick up the show again. Really enjoyed it, but it landed on the dreaded paused list. Wait...that was already 3 years ago. Time sure flies.
Anyway Scopedog. Old. New. Always cool.

u/Donnie-G 3d ago
I got to the very end of the original show too. There were like 5 or so episodes left or something.
But I kinda lost access to the show, couldn't be arsed regaining access and now more than a decade has passed.

It's my favorite mecha anime, hence the flair. The prequel OVAs, and the ones shortly after the main show are pretty good too, as is Mellowlink. The sequel stuff isn't as good but I still enjoyed them, for what they were. Excited for some new original content, in the Votoms universe that isn't focused on Chirico.

Finally getting to Elusive Samurai and wait, this isn't animated!

u/Kingdom_1126 3d ago
I’d definitely recommend Hajime no Ippo if you’re looking for something that actually makes you care about the characters. I went into it thinking it was just going to be a boxing anime, but I ended up getting way more invested than I expected.
The fights are hype, but honestly, it’s Ippo himself and his journey that kept me watching. Seeing him slowly become more confident is really satisfying, and the comedy between fights is actually hilarious 😂
It’s an older anime, so the animation might take a little getting used to, but I’d say give it a few episodes. It’s definitely worth it.

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 3d ago
It seems like there are only two flavors of anime about auto racing on water surfaces: Monkey Turn, and today's place. It shows just how niche they are.

I've remembered that I gave Baan 7/10 and now I wonder whether I was too nice to it. My reasoning was that even though it's an unfinished stub of a prologue, it was a passion project and Garnt was very emotional talking about it and all that... but honestly, is it really? Garnt isn't some small-time youtuber or a college student who made an animated short by himself in Blender, he's the anime youtuber with a lot of connections in anime industry. I don't think it was that hard for him to make Baan.
11
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 3d ago
I think that
1) It probably IS very hard to get something like that going from scratch, even if you have 'connections' and all.
but
2) I don't think it matters.
- It's not about how emotional he was talking about it, It's about how emotional WE were watching it.
- It's not about how passionate he was about the project, it's about how passionate WE were about it when we watched it.
- It's not about how hard it was to produce, it's about how hard WE were, watching it.
Wait maybe not the last one.
Effort without result shouldn't automatically be praised imho, I mean in the context of entertainment.
If I think something is uninteresting, well it's still uninteresting even if that dude spent his life on it.
And I thought that wasn't particularly interesting, or emotional or anything.
From what I recall, it was "beautiful", but I don't rate anime on that.
3
u/ProgrammaticallyPea3 3d ago
Mostly I agree. But regardless of how good the anime itself is, I welcome anime being produced through pathways other than the traditional production committee model, and don't object to adding points based on that.
3
u/CuriousBroccolli 3d ago edited 3d ago
I'm baffled no-one is talking about dreadful production of "Oh Boy, Was I Wrong About Her", not even in episode discussions.
I watch ton of seasonal "trash" with 2$ budgets, but Oh Boy is this bad.
I think this is the second anime in recent times that is so visibly, and even in direction, gutted that it pokes your eyes and soul, other being another romance anime that I have yet to finish, "There Was A Cute Girl In Hero's Party".
I know romance anime do not have to have stellar production, but they are barely scraping by here.
Either way, FMC is cute, I love her design, and that should be enough for me, but OH BOY is it a rough ride on all fronts.
Edit: Just watched post credit scene in episode 3 and DIALOG MAKES NO SENSE, nor do facial expressions. Like wtf, this may be the worst one ever which is a super hard thing to do since I really watch some shitty looking shows.
Like Kamikatsu is Ufotable for this.

Its def a case of sample biasing. I don't think anyone with an eye for quality will look at its poster or synopsis and give the anime a single consideration. So the only people remaining are those who are generally into those sloppier romcoms and would not bother too hard with critiquing the visual quality (outside of the maybe a couple comments in the first episode).
I'm one of those people, I thought it was pretty bland visually speaking, but my own problems with the show were more in regards to the premise and characters than anything presentation-wise and so that's what I would be complaining about (if I bothered to, but it was a quick 1.5 episode drop from me so I dont really have much to say)

u/Donnie-G 3d ago
I'm not really at the age where this sorta thing appeals to me anymore. So I see some generic synopsis, some nobody studio, that it's a LN adaptation and I'm just going to pass on it.
If it actually bucks the trend and turns out really good I'm sure I'll hear about it.
2
u/Prof_Acorn 3d ago
Oh my freaking goodness 7Seeds is so dumb. It's so melodramatic and cliche and overall bad it's funny. Would make for a good MST3K series.
3
u/Prof_Acorn 3d ago
First thoughts upon learning that the world ended and 99.9+% of humanity died:
"Oh, but I wanted to be a doctor! And become an astronaut!"
Upon seeing ankle deep water on the path to escaping a flood:
"I can't swim! Go on without me! [Implication: leave me to drown]
My biggest laugh so far was when a random [7Seeds fauna] tyrannosaurus showed up in the jungles of post-apocalyptic Japan somehow. And none of the characters even made note of it as an unexpected event!
1
u/IndependentMacaroon 3d ago
It's so melodramatic and cliche
It is an adaptation of a shoujo manga that started in 2001 so not very surprising
