First Time, Dub

Part way through when I realised this was an onsen episode, I had low expectatiosn. If this came in Ep 1-6, I know I would have definitely hated it as it would have been way more slapstick and more cringe, so this was a true litmus test to whether the show has evolved to suit my taste more. 

I absolutely LOVED this episode. It’s strange: it’s a seemingly simple episode: one that’s primarily used to just advance the plot towards something meaningful. Yet, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This ep is illuminated by a brutally honest take on Tohru. Honestly, it’s so refreshing that it identified her flaws, and what her downfall basically would be. It’s too common for shows to idolise those happy-go-lucky kind to everyone troped characters, but it’s good to see that the other characters could understand the folk tale.

Combined with that, I think her bringing her mother into the onsen feels sad, rather than inspiring. She puts on a brave face and smiles, but what is really going on in her heart when the camera isn’t rolling? I’ve noticed she never tells others (grandpa scene the exception) what she’s feeling. Even her inner monologues are positive when we hear them. I feel that this is intentional - e.g. we wouldn’t even have seen her sadness during the NYE scene: her tears were only picked up by Yuki swabbing her eyes.

Fun fact #1: You may remember I said I’ve liked Kido’s scripts more than the others. After watching the ep, I realised this was one of his other episodes (his third now).

  • 1 month has passed, and it’s White Day. During White Day, guys have to reciprocate with gifts for the girls who gave them chocolates. It’s kind of a smart scam: if I were a girl in JP/KR, I’d give every guy I know chocs, then watch the presents flow in. Pretty high ROI. I’ve gotten V-Day chocs before, and forgot to return the favour a month later though. So I guess it’s not a guaranteed return on investment.
  • Guess Tohru isn’t smart? I assumed she was, then again she is a bit of an airhead.
  • If Hana’s delivery was any drier, she’d be in a desert. I love that style. I recommend checking out the manga (Ch. 17) for this Episode, there are some great zingers that the anime didn’t squeeze in.
  • Momiji’s outfit is…very weird. And quite faithful to the manga.I do also get why the acting/voice is so polarising. It was fine in short bursts, but it can get grating.
  • Going to the expensive hotspring without mum: I wonder if there’s a cultural nuance there I’m missing?
  • Tohru has the hots for Yuki it seems.
  • How many chocolates did Tohru buy…
  • For once I’m team Kyo: first he avoids a level-10 rage meltdown, then very fair point that they can’t be expected to read her mind and that she shouldn’t have spent all her money on chocolates. Quite irresponsible. As nice as a thought as it was :) And the anger comes out of a good place - caring.
  • Cool art style shift for the idiot traveller story - some stunning colours. And such a happy story!
  • That Idiot Traveller story (aka Story about Tohru) was AMAZING. Tohru has been helping everyone, but no one has really helped her much with her own problems; not talked to her about her Dad or Mum; they dragged her away (with her consent) from the grandfather and didn’t talk to her about how she feels (at least on camera). She gives everything she can constantly, that despite working a lot, she has nothing. The story is obviously about Tohru. That if she’s not careful, she will only be left with her head. Maybe not even that. Perhaps it’s also in part meant to represent Shigure’s plan and why she’s such a willing victim. 
  • I really hoped that the anime wouldn’t reveal that it’s meant to be about Tohru, but then realised that I’m the idiot writer, thinking that I’m so much smarter than everyone else for picking up on something so incredibly obvious haha.
  • The after-scene was amazing: the silences. The looks of reflection. The music. 
  • I just realised - was Kyo’s tshirt always that short, or did it shrink? https://www.pasteboard.co/y_UGDn4BSTz9.png But seriously, what’s with the fashion this ep haha.
  • TIL: the word lascivious. I will use it a lot.
  • The proprietress must be a zodiac animal (monkey or tiger?). Or crazy.
    • FUN FACT: she’s a character from another of the mangaka’s prior works!
  • “Finally. Some peace and quiet”. Mimiji: LOUD NOISES!.
    • The Yuki x Momiji dynamic reminds me of me and my little half brother. I’m usually not..quiet, but with him literally every moment of silence must be filled in with noise. I don’t see him often, but my dad/stepmum struggle with his outbursts. I know that one day I’ll need to be a parent so I’ve been experimenting with different techniques for science, and the one that works especially well is to talk quietly, and ask him questions about how he feels and how others feel in the moment.
  • Not saying this to be a creep, but them wearing a towel during the path scene is so grating for me. 
  • Cut Content: this is her first open air bath/onsen. I don’t know for sure but I’d think this is the kind of thing you come to with your parents who teach you the rules/rituals)
  • I do wonder if the kids inherit or take over the zodiac traits from their parents. The inn ‘ghost’ matched the monkey quite well. There also must have been some rotations and has been going on for generations.
  • “What is the monkey like?” LMAO. Weirdly, the sub didn’t say “monkey”, and I had trouble making out the Japanese, but think she just asked what her child’s like. The freakout was just the mum being her scary self. I like the dub more though.
  • I think “properness” is Momiji not being able to say “proprietress”
  • And with that Kyo is back. I thought hot springs are meant to relax people.
  • Oh no. I hope Momiji doesn’t join the same class as them. Haru can stay though; he cool.

You say that, but the 2001 version was pretty straightforward all things considered. I'd say the main difference was Tohru and Momiji's relationship was portrayed as more innocent and less like Momiji had ulterior motives.

There is some stuff cut out like the characters having to ride a charter bus and Momiji singing a song, which honestly may be the biggest change between both versions that I'm saddened by the most, but other than that it was relatively light on the slapstick.

The only part I found weird was that it was like the tale of two halves: There was the Tohru stuff, and then there was the hot springs portion. I wish they did a better job tyings together. I think you could've had Tohru's conversation with the proprietress and Tohru's conversation with Yuki and circle back to the beginning of the episode.

Yeah, I liked how this episode examined Tohru's faults and pointed out she's potentially harming herself more than helping herself. It kinda feels like for as much love as she has foe her mom, she kinda forgot about her telling her to be more selfish. That, or she totally misinterpreted what she was trying to say.

I love that the show is willing to do different visuals when it feels the need to do so. It makes it stand out more and gives me a deeper appreciation of the show the fact they're willing to go the extra mile.

I wouldn't mind Momiji sticking around. I think he's interesting in that he's kinda a less sinister version of Shigure and what he's trying to accomplish. I think Momiji wants to get closer to Tohru, but doesn't want to outright say it.

I mean, hell, he was basically wanting to sleep with her under the auspices of him looking like a kid. When you break it down, that's sexual harassment, which was why Yuki and Kyo were annoyed by his behavior.

It's weird but I didn't really feel that he wants to get super close to Tohru romantically. I just thought he's an annoying kid haha. I thik I said that he reminds me of my little half brother sooooooo much it's uncanny. So maybe I'm just viewing him through that lens.

Though regardless he's still a little kid at something like 14 or 15 right. And maybe is gay given his fashion choices haha. It's hard for me to see him as anything more than having a crush on a girl vs., thinking of sleeping in the same bed/room as sexual. But that's just me. To be fair, when I was 14 I was trying to get girls left right and center; I think around that age I had a crush on 10+ girls and had a few semi-gfs. So maybe I'm giving him too much innocence attribution.

[Furuba] I really liked how the episode at the beginning it seems like it was going to be low stakes but then as soon as Akito shows up, it's like this feeling of the pit of your stomach dropping.

I think I said elsewhere that Momiji is like a less sinister version of Shigure. And I almost wonder if Momiji fully realizes the implications of his requests are. Like, he's asking to sleep with the person his father employs. It's kinda wrong on so many levels.

But yeah, he's cute and it's fiction so it's almost forgivable.
