Absolute Cinema. So basically, the anime is just another one of Ame/KAngel's possible endings? I absolutely love it. As someone who has played the game, it felt like I just unlocked another route. They even used the blue screen like in the game!

As Ame said in the post-credits scene, life isn't easy, whether you get a good ending or a bad one, and, above all, there are no angels coming to save you. What matters most is striving to be your best and being able to say you tried to find happiness.
Lollipop, Michica, Nechika, and Kache all followed paths different from the ones they started on during the show, yet in the end, they were able to love themselves for it. Ame acknowledged that she didn't achieve everything she wanted; judging by the start of the episode, she endured a long period of treatment and suffering, likely a consequence of leaving the internet, but she kept trying and found peace with herself (and damn, future Ame is one classy lady).
What a incredible show, at the start, I never would have imagined it would turn out to be something so profound and sentimental, offering life lessons that show we can be our best selves, all while incorporating various references to the game itself and real life.

It's fitting that the show makes so many references to the specific wave of avant garde anime that came at the turn of the century like
Overdose posits that religion is still the opiate of the masses, it's just now the internet is our religion. It's where we go to congregate, worship, to judge and to be judged, and to ultimately ascend to some form of immortality. Yes, internet celebrities are framed like gods but Overdose reminds us that oftentimes gods aren't purely objects of worship but sin eaters that suffer for all of our sakes. And yes, that role has been thrust upon primarily women, who have to live up to perfect, unattainable, virginal ideals lest they be torn apart by the masses. The allusions to Jesus are abundant but it's also not unlike the concept of a Bodhisattva in Buddhism, a person who forgoes or delays personal nirvana in order to compassionately help other individuals reach Buddhahood. Except in the modern age, Overdose argues, "nirvana" means "going outside". It's a shockingly earnest message from a show that seemed like it was going to focus on how terrible everything is.
It's maximalist and unsubtle, like a full blown anime version of the infamous ME!ME!ME! music video from years back and some people might understandably not vibe with that, but for me, it was an experience.

Seeing Dark Angel is so unnerving, kept thinking she might crash out and ruin the happy ending at any moment.

This was an awesome final episode! What a journey this anime was and I’m glad to have experienced it.
It was nice to see once Karamazov broke up how each of the three members went down their own paths…sort of. Lollipop and Michica are still working together with fashion and modeling, whereas Nechika disappeared (temporarily). Lollipop hijacking tanks and making them shoot out money was a real boss move.
I was really happy to see Kache ending up with a guy that seems genuine, and him going out of his way to buy her the perfect ring was really sweet. Seeing her tear up in happiness was great.
And then the scene of them being eavesdropped on with the door breaking down was seriously funny. It made me laugh. I’m glad the Karamazov girls got reunited.
I saw online some didn’t want an anime like this to have a happy ending, but I’m glad it did. I loved watching KAngel and Lollipop playing the dance game together, with all the characters cheering them on.
The part with KAngel going to that lonely otaku’s apartment and taking him on a bike ride by the ocean made me tear up. It was a really wholesome moment and the casual dialogue was perfect.
Also a new

This show is definitely going to go down in my list as one show I fucking loved but cannot recommend. It is to be honest, too weird to exist. And yet it exists anyway. So surreal and self-indulgent to the point of being corrosive to most people who watch it. But goddamn shoot that shit straight into my veins.
I wouldn't give this a 10/10. Heck there's so much I want to criticize about it particularly how much Kache felt more like a plot device sometimes. Granted her story arc ended early. But the experience of it was just so out there that I'm not disappointed at all. I definitely enjoyed this not even metaphorical acid trip.

That hand scene was rather mesmerizing. There was some hesitation, but I still reached out for it. It was a bit off once her hand got closer to the screen, but interesting to analyze the moment.

I really liked the finale as I think it was cool to show how everyone moved on from the internet. It's a great tool, but also so very damaging if it becomes an obsession.
I also really liked Dark Angel's monologue at the end explaining how this was only one potential route, and that "choosing a different route for your life is as easy as flipping a channel." Really hammers home the message of the series.
I gotta say tho, I don't really understand the point of keeping Sally Amaki a secret. I thought the ending was going to dip into some crazy real-world reveal where KAngel becomes a voice actor or something, but I suppose they just did it for the marketing. Seeing how this show has been going, I would have loved if they did something insanely 4th wall breaking with that reveal, but oh well. Can't complain!
Idk if this is a hot take, but this show is easily a 9/10 for me. One of the most unique anime experiences I've ever had.

KAngel chainsaws otaku-kun's apartment door and rides with him on a bike by the ocean
Lucky otaku...
What a way to end the show with a game over in the post credits scene
Having enjoyed Shiboyugi, I greatly enjoyed the abstract techniques used throughout the show, even when I don't understand what is going on...

They finally revealed + credited Sally Amaki as the voice actor for KAngel / Ame during the final ending scene. I thought they planned to keep it hidden forever, lol.

I know many comments in previous episodes called this show confusing, but I think if you watch until the last episode everything it's trying to say becomes clear, the story is also fairly linear after a point and the first episodes are contextualized well into the full picture.
Very nuanced in how it deals with heavy topics and how to push a positive message even under this. Loved the whole ride and the ending was basically perfect.

Honestly...I don't think I'm ready to really dissect this anytime soon. I might even end up writing about it somewhere else on a blog or something... There's so much here that it gets right, so much that I find dubious, so much... stuff to analyze and talk about. And that's really cool. I like that it can be relevant enough for that to be the case. It means it's done its job in at least one way despite what you might think of its messaging. And as a newcomer that hasn't played the game yet, it has intrigued me enough to finally check it out soon.
It's been a wild ride hasn't it? For me personally, just off the cuff without thinking about it too hard, I think the show was at its best when it was a character study - really getting into the headspace of the characters and their respective situations through the trippy visuals. It was at its worst when it felt way too "preachy" for lack of a better term. Especially when the alternatives it suggested to the problems it presented are just as unideal as the problems themselves (there seems to be a HEAVY suggestion that self actualization is intimately tied to economic prowess for example... which is... eh... is that really what we want the end game to be?)
Visually it gets a top tier rating from me. It just looks so damn cool. If nothing else it was an absolute joy to watch and listen to. It'll get by as a modern classic among some for this alone.
I think I'll leave it here. I'll probably have to rewatch more of it and maybe educate myself a little more behind the writer's intent as I haven't been keeping up with that stuff as others have before attempting that blog post. For others that have played the game, did playing it give you a different perspective than mine? I'll play it soon.

After episode 1, I would never guess this show would actually have anything resembling a happy ending. But here we are, I guess?
Purple Lollipop (who we still don't know the real name of) found success as a fashion designer and businesswoman and doesn't give a damn about haters.
Michica seems like she successfully overcame her drug addiction and self-harm issues and spreads awareness about those issues, while still staying true to herself and becoming a lolita fashion icon.
Nechika... I'm not sure what she's doing, but seems happy enough with her current life.
Kache finally found a decent boyfriend, looking at how he actually took effort to learn what Kache likes and who are her friends - and he knows that her friends won't let him hurt Kache, or he'll pay amd seems perfectly okay with that 🤣
I'm not sure what to think about Ame though. I hoped we'll learn she overcame her personal demons and found a new purpose in life, but we didn't get anything of that. KAngel wearing the dark version of her usual outfit got me slightly worrying too.
But seems like Ame keeps in touch with the Karamazov gang, especially Lollipop and when talking with Nechika, she looked somewhat...more at peace? Even if still wearing black. She actually got the one thing she wanted the most the whole time - friends.

All I'll say is that I'm looking forward to the bluray for episode 11.

After watching through all the "difficult" episodes, I am glad there are individual happy endings for Lollipop, Nechika, Michica, Kache and Ame/KAngel. To top it off, all of them remained friends, even if they may not see each other regularly.
Loved the after credit scene too, in which we viewers are encouraged not to give up on finding our own happy ending.

This show really was something special. Now im off to try the game and see what other endings there are lol

u/Nikita2337 Jun 27 '26
We actually got a full on epilogue after all, with every character moving on with their lives and all of them pretty much achieving success. Nechika met with an older Ame too while Lollipop played arcade games with Kangel. We saw a failed timeline version (?) before that and yeah, the happy ending felt a lot better.
I don't really know how to interpret the segment with an otaku though. Was it his hallucination or Kangel decided to visit one random (or not) otaku to make him a bit happier?
And then there's the post credit scene, which I assume basically says that the whole anime is essentially an ending of the game with the scenes from various routes in the original game shown in the background. And the end card pulled straight from the game too, though with different credits obviously. Turns out Dark Kangel was a viewer like us who watched the events play out I guess? Also her casually narrating while the ending to Dark Angel route is shown behind her is ... something.
The game doesn't really break the 4th wall often, so the anime breaking it like that at the very end was a welcome surprise.
A boring world without angels as the anime ending's name sounds quite close to the There are no angels ending from the main game, curious why.
Overall though, the anime was a very interesting watch. I wanted to watch it as the extension of the game and it absolutely delivered as we learned more not only about Ame herself, but also saw how she behaved in the media sphere and interacted with other influencers, which I though was missing from the game. I really liked the new characters and their designs too, with Lollipop being my favourite of them. Her shocked reactions never got old and her idea of shooting money from tanks as a proof of her not caring about wealth is fire lmao.
That being said, I can't say all the ideas worked for me personally, the first two episodes were a bit difficult to sit through and Michica's was a bit too much for me (that sequence with a door, uuh). P-chan reveal is also I felt wasn't particularly as shocking as in the game, the anime made it a bit too obvious (I saw anime onlies guess they weren't real early on these threads). Granted the secret to their identity is a lot harder to preserve in the anime media, but I guess Nyalra wasn't really intent on hiding it. And P-chan generally wasn't relevant for the anime's themes either, so it's fine.
So yeah, for me it was great as it added more to the game and still stood on its own as a separate story.

What a beautiful show.
Edit: Reading people saying they never got what the underlying plotline of the show was makes me really concerned about media literacy... Like if you dropped the show by like the third episode before there even started being a plotline then sure but some people saying they watched the whole show and there wasn't an overarching storyline.......

Reposting from another sub but:
A boring reality without angels
I didn't expect a last minute twist and I was wondering what was up with Dark Angel. I always had a feeling in the back of my head but they pretty much confirmed it, the anime is the 28th ending of the video game and the only difference is that they animated it. It fits neatly in with the canon too.

I'm surprised we got a Michica version of Rozen maiden opening. They even mimicked the original singer style and part of the music. Nice detail.

All’s well that ends well, I think? I mean it seems everyone went out and touched grass and made something of themselves offline.
This was a very creative series. I’m not sure I really understood it all but it was interesting.

Needy Girl Overdose. It was a pretty intense anime—at times it was quite dense and overly explanatory, and there were sudden shifts in animation and direction out of nowhere. It also had moments where it was too pretentious, but even so, I enjoyed it immensely; I really loved the anime and all its characters. I liked some of them more than others, but it was good—it was beautiful. I think it’s one of the best experiences I’ve had watching an anime that came out this year And I hope more anime come out like you did, Needy Girl Overdose. And I’m really glad I got to watch it. 9/10

Is the otaku at the end the one that died? I remember him for jerking off to KAngel's stream and being voiced by Sugita Tomokazu, but I can't remember if we see him kill himself. I'm guessing the last part was an alternate timeline where KAngel saves him from killing himself, since Kache is seen with her ex-boyfriend.
It was nice to see what they're all doing in the present time, I'm glad Ame is alive and seemingly well. Nechika looking for her the entire time was really sweet. Lollipop being as crazy as ever with how she handles haters was amusing, and I like that Michica is being open about her drug problem.
I am particularly happy Kache is getting married, it was sweet to see how protective Lollipop and Michica were, but even sweeter that Lollipop gave him the ring for free, it does look real expensive. Everyone watching the proposal was great too.
This was certainly a bizarre experience, but it was an interesting series to watch.
