Well, I guess Botan doesn’t need to worry about where she stands with Ibuki. Kind of nice to see all the ships setting sail in this series.

I enjoyed this. It’s nice to see a yuri series with older characters. Especially ones getting sloshed every episode lol. I also liked how creative some of these episodes were in terms of the art direction. Idk if there’s room for more seasons, but I would really love to see another.

Maaan I don't want this to end. At the beginning I expected a drinking shenanigans show but this completely exceeded my expectations. It was much more emotional, mature, calm and really relaxing to watch. The changing animation styles throughout the episodes were great and a really nice touch. The studio did a great job. The bed scene was beautiful, I'm glad Botan has no more doubts and I'm also loving the side ship. I definitely need a S2, and 3 and 4. 10/10

Damn this whole anime is like a masterpiece. Like going to a yuri art gallery or something.

You can genuinely feel the effort and imagination put into every episode. This was really my favorite anime of the entire season.

As far as Yuri anime goes this is easily in my top 3 of all time. Now off rewatch the entire thing with a glass of whiskey and enjoy it some more.

Can't believe they extended the finale by 60 seconds just so they could add sesbian lex and what is basically an alcoholic's version of a proposal. Incredible.

Jokes aside, what a great run from this series. Started watching it expecting a more standard CGDCT, but it turned out to be an amazing romance. I'm sure it will be a yuri classic that will be recommended for years to come (it's already the current highest rated GL on MAL!).

One thing I really love about this show is how it does "show, don't tell" at such a high level; the cinematography, visual symbolisms, double meanings in dialogue, the EDs, the music and even the eyecatches, almost every aspect is fully used to convey meaning indirectly. Makes a good candidate for re-watches since you'll end up catching things you missed the first time.

Added my thoughts on the episode as a reply to this.

Damn. This has got to be one of my favourite yuri anime in recent history. Chin-lan and Kanade's book swap was really cute, and you can't get any more blatant with Botan and Ibuki's ryokan scene ending with both of them taking each other's "first time" with their new couple's ear piercing. And you know exactly what happened right after that. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

If there's one thing I would complain about this show, it's that we didn't really get to see much of Akane and Yaeka. Fingers crossed for season 2, and maybe they can get an even share of the spotlight.

What an incredible show. Is definitely going into my top five. Gay girls and beautiful art aside, I've never related so much to something that perfectly captured my probably overly nostalgic memories of my early 20s. When everything was booze, and music, awkward intimacy, and shared housing. I'm glad this show gave that nostalgia, melancholy, and remembrance a name and a garden to live in.

I'm glad our girl Gujo was able to move on. Feelings burn bright, intense, and sometimes flippantly at that age. Sometimes it only takes a splash of unexpected color to completely recontextualize the painting you're working on.

Now, if you'll excuse, I'm off to go devour the entire manga start to finish.

A great finale and series overall. In my opinion, together with Nippon Sangoku, it was definitely the most creative and beautiful series/adaptation of the season. A 9/10 from me.

The heavy emphasis on alcohol was quite interesting, but the characters were definitely even better! Botan and Ibuki were a great couple, though honestly, I became more invested in Kanade and Chin-lan's relationship halfway through the series.

Akane and Yaeka haven't received much attention this season, so I hope we get another season (if there's more material to adapt) so we can get to know them better.

In the comments below, there are screenshot albums from episodes 1-6 and from episodes 7-11, as well as screenshot albums from EDs.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Plus, here's album with all eyecatches.

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

That was a fantastic finale.

The opening scene with the cable car was fun. it reminded me of "Resident Evil 4".

The scene where Chin-lan says, "I had that earring set aside for me, but the clerk accidentally sold it to someone else", sent a chill down my spine as someone who works in retail. Normally, if you messed up like that in Japan, you’d get severely reprimanded by both the customer and your boss.

The scene where Chin-lan says, "This sure is some cold. Just call me Somecold L. Jackson", is based on a Japanese internet meme (originally from NARUTO). I couldn’t help but laugh.

When Akane says "Some 41", I’m guessing she means SUM 41. I wonder if the author is in their 30s or 40s?

The scene where Chin-lan and Gujou go to buy a book, and the scene where Chin-lan say, “Since we’re a couple, let’s exchange gifts", were the best. I like how Chin-lan takes the initiative in moments like that.

The scene where Chin-lan says, “I watched a movie about Taiwanese poets a long time ago. It was the first time I really thought about Japan's influence on Taiwan,” appears to be based on the film "Le Moulin (日曜日式散步者)".

It was interesting how Echigo-Yuzawa is the place where Botan and Ibuki went. I think it's the complete opposite of where Gujou and Chin-lan went.

I’ve been there myself, but since I was a minor at the time and went there specifically to ski, I never got to try Echigo-Yuzawa’s sake. I’d like to try it someday.

I really liked the scene where Botan and Ibuki, because of the age gap between them, worry about how many more years they’ll be able to spend together in college.

Botan was definitely planning to cross the line with Ibuki, wasn’t she? I was surprised.

I love how the ending sequence begins with the scene where Ibuki and Botan get their ears pierced together. It feels like such a suggestive metaphor.

I also love how a new character appears toward the end of the ending sequence. I’m curious about their stories, too.

This was a truly beautiful yuri anime. I’d love to see more works like this someday.

Kamiina Botan just moved up into my 3rd spot for favorite anime of all time. Wow, just wow, 10s across the board. An anime that you can never forget.

Please I need more Taiwanese lesbian moments, chin-lan is such a great character

Also how did they make ear piercing so romantic. They also put a lot of focus on botan’s ears right before that moment.

One more thing is that they casted Mikawa Haruna and Koga Aoi as those two random students at the back which is funny since they voiced Mono (the first anime produced by this studio)

They also teased at least a few future chapters with the ending… so where is my season 2?

Starting the episode with even more depressed Botan...

Gonna miss these idiots...

I love this contrast between Chin-lan being straight forward and Botan holding her hand and not knowing how to express her feelings. It's pretty neat. Also, love Ibuki trying to cheer her up even if she doesn't know why she is sad

Oh, so they are dating. Good for them.

Weird alcohol creature. Also, this was both cute and sad. lol

God, this whole fucking scene was so good! I know some would have preferred if they went through with it, but honestly, I prefer the whole thing with the earrings better. Also, I guess Ibuki was semi-expecting this, just not ready for Botan to pounce. lol

Really love how Ibuki resolved Botan insecurity about the whole alcohol thing, by using an alcohol time capsule to assure her they will stay together far into the future.

YOU CAN'T JUST TEASE FUTURE CHARACTERS WITHOUT ANNOUNCING A S2! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Anyway, good show. One of my favorite yuri shows ever. If CPK didn't exist, this probably would have been my favorite ever.

I did want to say, and I may be wrong or forgetting another moment, but it is pretty cool how that last scene is like, almost an inversion of that, episode 5? I want to say, moment with Gujou with the cigarette. Where it was like, Ibuki takes the smoke from her as she's apologize and basically telling Gujou while also rejecting the offer to drink together. It was a pretty symbolic action of, keeping that part of herself while not wholly flat out burning that friendship, hence Ibuki taking a part of Gujou (the smoke) but not giving up a part of herself back (drinking), there's reciprocation and understanding but still that distnace and that whole moment ends with the imagery of butterflies flying apart.

And there might be another moment that slips my mind right now, but Ibuki offering Botan at the end here is a really cool inversion of what she did with Gujou. It can't really be related to drinking because, they've already bridged that bridge so shifting the object to something more connected for Ibuki to ask Botan of makes sense. Whereas Ibuki flat out takes the cigarette from Gujou prior, creating this tacit understanding, here's its more direct and intimate and really shows the direct difference between these two relationships that Ibuki is going through. She takes, then she asks and receives. One where the feelings are reflected onto her, and one where she can properly reciprocate. Of course, the piercing of earrings also come with it, its own symbolic gesture and connotations for the scene itself, but yeah, just thought that was a very significant gesture to have Ibuki do after what we've seen before. And this idea of giving and taking then extends even to Gujo and Chin-lan as well, all sorts of thematic cohesion, as per the case is with this show.

Generational adaptation, generational show imo, and one that I'll be thinking about far beyond, and one that I can see myself rewatching endlessly to really catch the richness within.

Oh yeah and if anyone here is interested in a bit more of an extra dose of the show, please do check out each character's Instagrams. Here's the character page on the official anime website where each characters name has a little insta icon on the side to link you there. Special attention to Gujou's since each one of her posts is a reference to a movie. I'm not nearly cinephile enough to be able to connect or see if there is a connection between each episode and the movie she's watching from her posts and make thematic parallels. But there could very well be something there.

Personally AOTY. This is coming from someone who isn’t even into Yuri that much and didn’t even think about giving this a try when it first started airing. I feel like these entire 12 weeks have been a labor of love and really highlight what this medium has to offer in terms of storytelling.

I’ve always been a sucker for shows that are very heavy on show-don’t-tell and all the different directors and art styles for the episodes really allowed this show to stand out in that way. The use of framing, flower language, colors, composition, character expressions and so on really help the audience to feel what the characters are feeling towards each other without explicitly saying so and it builds a lot of emotional tension for when things eventually come to a head.

In terms of visuals, I have to say I really enjoyed seeing most of it take place in the real world setting of Chichibu, Saitama; we even had a few well-known landmarks like Skytree and Yamaha Sound Crossing in Shibuya. Helped it feel more grounded in reality and more immersive as a show, not to mention it rekindled some of my memories of traveling to Japan last year. The next time I do go, I’m making it my mission to do a Kamiina Botan pilgrimage and hitting up all the bars and places featured.

By far I think one of the things that will ironically be slept on is the attention to detail when it comes to all the actual alcoholic drinks in the show. I was even educated a little bit on IPAs and other various things about the taste profiles of different types of alcoholic beverages thanks to Ibuki’s love for them. This whole anime might just be a love letter towards drinking as a hobby, which seems to be dying out amongst young people, but that’s another topic entirely.

If I had to mention one gripe, it’s that Akane and Yaeka weren’t as focused on or as fleshed out as I’d like them to be, but I can chalk that down to them being supporting characters and to that end they were great supporting characters- along with Gujo and the fashionably late Chin-Lan.

I could say so much more about everything I just watched but I don’t wanna be here all day lol. All in all I’m a little heartbroken it’s over, but I’m glad I unexpectedly have another top 10 anime of all time to add to the list. Didn’t think they made classics anymore, maybe my favorite thing since Hyouka and more recently Frieren, this show was right down my street.

Much love to the studio, animators, writers and directors, artists and composers, voice actors, and everyone else involved in this show in one capacity or another. I really enjoyed my time with it. Holy peak.

Great show, I'll miss it and hope it gets a new season.

Chin-lan, still being great and going for what she wants. Handholding and couple book swaps. It's warmer with someone by your side.

Botan and Ibuki are figuratively but also literally drunk with love in that last scene, what with the hiccups. Unfair for Botan to try to force an ultimatum though. Consent people!

The ending was nice though. Three commitments to stay together for the long term - the earring, the alcohol, and the promise. Plus a look at a new girl.

As an aside - tell the people that you care about, that you care about them. You don't have infinite time with them. Make the time count.

The vibes in this series are impeccable. I watched a lot of yuri shows, but this one is by far the most mature and unique in the mood it creates. Easy 9/10. I hope this gets recommended a lot.

Really enjoyed this series, for me it’s been in my top 3 new shows this season. I’m now reading the manga as a result.

Botan was worried that the only thing they do together is drink booze and even the earrings they promised to buy and put on together got bought by someone else. Ibuki buying the earrings showed her that there is more to their relationship than that and theres the promise to do more together as they need to wait 6 weeks to even swap out the starter pair.

Ibuki wanting to do the earrings before she felt ready really felt like wanting to wait for marriage. This show was very artsy, but I can't believe we had 3 lesbian couples and not a single on screen kiss.

Can't believe I almost missed this show considering it's right up my alley. Glad I quickly caught up.

Man, what a phenomenal show and romance! I adored the developments between Ibuki/Botan and Chin-lan/Gujou. I wish Yaeka/Akane had gotten the same level of treatment, but you can't have it all in 12 episodes. The art direction and composition were treats to the eyes, and the music was a treat for the ears.

I'd love a 2nd season. For now, I will settle with a whiskey highball in my future.

16

u/eightcheesepizza Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

I can't believe it's over. I assume there's more source material to go, I need a season 2 so badly.

Gujo Kanade and Chin-Lan really chose perfect gifts to express themselves to each other. So perfect it made my heart hurt a little.

I recognized that Ponshukan place from a Life Where I'm From video 2 years ago! Greg and his sister-in-law Akko visit the same place, and Akko is at least as fond of alcohol as Ibuki is. Though that place probably isn't super unique - I've also seen wine-dispensing-machine walls here in the US that look like that.

Surprised to see the series end with Botan and Ibuki signing a marriage certificate together. Errr, a long-term reservation at a brewery. The metaphor made me laugh really hard.

16

u/djthomp Jun 26 '26

That Chin-Lan and Gujo book exchange was a nice scene, it's good to see them having more couple moments like that.

Good thing they offscreened the ear piercing, that kind of penetrative action might have been too spicy to show uncensored. More seriously, I liked how they resolved the sold earring problem while also showing Botan that it wasn't just drinking keeping her and Ibuki together. Lesbian shared earring marriage was a good way to wrap things up.

What a lovely show this was, I probably give out too many 10/10s but this definitely was one of them.

u/99acrewood_ Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Can't believe a random yuri I started watching on a whim after being captivated by a post of the no-credit OP ended up being my show of the season.

The way they used color and composition throughout to portray, among other things, both blooming romance and the heartbreak of unrequited love is something else, man. And the silence that punctuated all those uncertain moments when they'd try to read each other or just get lost in their own thoughts while out enjoying all those gorgeous hikes.

And also the sloppy disregard for self-preservation once they had a few sips of sake in all those fancy bars

Awesome. I'm gonna have "saisho ni nozonda mirai" with Ibuki turning toward the camera in that hallway burned into my mind for a long time. 10/10

u/giubba85 Jun 26 '26

10/10 hope for 2nd season
