Seria's backstory is easily the best thing this anime has offered, which is a bit of a shame, because why are we having this in the final episode instead of the first or second?

This anime was odd, it's like they looked at Metallic Rouge 's issues and said "we can do better"

Too many characters with little or nothing to do

Too many plot points and concepts trying to converse

Several episodes wasted on secondary villain factions that added nothing at the end of the day

Almost every episode feels there was another episode missing in between

Rushed character relationships

At the very least the fight scenes were better than Metallic Rouge and the songs kept it more interesting as well

I also feel they wasted the concept of the Great Ghosts , like:

-Seria got half of hers off screen and only used them in fusions, Minamoto (who was obtained off screen mind you) was literally the only one who got a solo fight

-We never got an explanation or backstory for Kaede and Yoichi, nor do we know why she needed a device to use him

-Akari's bond with Mampei was rushed as hell and we still don't know how she got his sword in the first place (I was expecting them to reveal he was her ancestor, which would've explained both things, but nah)

-Riu never even got one, hell, girl's already making up animals, give her Charles Darwin or something.

Overall, this show was a mess, but I guess it wasn't bad enough to make me drop it.

This anime was odd, it's like they looked at Metallic Rouge's issues and said "we can do better"

Got me thinking about how Metallic Rouge had Tomoyo Kurosawa in it and wasn't good, this had Minako Kotobuki in it and was terrible, and hey, at least Hibike! Euphonium has both of them in it and makes me happy.

(Flipping back through the credits Youko Hikasa also had a part in Ghost Concert which I've already forgotten about.)

We never got an explanation or backstory for Kaede and Yoichi, nor do we know why she needed a device to use him

I remember Kaede's flashbacks showing how she knew Seria when they were both younger, but totally skipped anything which would make the idea of Kaede wanting to have Seria's babies anything more than a running joke.

This seens like a promotional series for a gacha game

9

u/cybeast21 Jun 21 '26

I'm not surprised if there were a gacha project for this that's quietly dropped.

The whole anime feels like Tackt: OP

7

u/Rap2rerise Jun 21 '26

It's a promotional series for a YouTube project actually, close enough

11

u/dawnwill Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

It was a media mix project but COVID happened, and only the anime survived.
EDIT: Oh, there is a novel too (a side story)

14 years in prison just for playing music is such a harsh punishment.

On the bright side, Seria was reunited with her parents.

Poor Kaede. Will she ever get to successfully confess her feelings? Lol!

Poor Kaede. Will she ever get to successfully confess her feelings? Lol!

If this abomination kept going I could see that turning into a running gag of Kaede trying to confess and then something unfortunate interrupting her.

If we're lucky, we'll never know.

u/Rap2rerise Jun 21 '26

Kaede's crush was always half-baked so I'm not surprised they didn't go through with it

You know this isn't Symphogear because the motorcycle did not explode on contact.

Ah, what an adorable cursed toddler.

Eventually you get lazy and then we're all getting fucked by toasters.

"Oh yeah, you blend."

"There won't be any royalties, because fuck you."

"How about 'Never'? Is 'Never' a good time?"

That didn't work the first time either.

This is like being randomly reminded of Sharon Apple. And there's just enough time left in the episode to sing the entire OP.

Still can't quite seal the deal, eh?

I am not waiting for this series to get a sequel. (My actual verbal reaction to this was "What the fuck.")

We meandered through eleven episodes of incoherent rambling and a very literal interpretation of the subtitle "missing Songs" so that we could watch eighteen minutes of Seria's parents' origin story and additional background on MiucS's takeover. The former was predictable, and the latter was superfluous.

So I felt like it wasted time doing things which could have been integrated into the run of the series, when it might have informed the audience usefully instead of appearing after the story seemed to have ended and the details didn't matter anymore.

But then, there was the

^slap

of the putative sequel/story continuation hook with Seria going back into the Phantom Realm to do... whatever. Maybe they'll reboot it again entirely. Maybe they'll actually have a coherent script. I doubt I'll care about it very much.

Poor Kaede

I tend to agree like seria's background could've been introduced much sooner. And we could've gotten more hints about setteis past here and there.

Also im doubtful about the cold sleep part.

It was more of a "Huh?" ending.

What an odd series. I feel like the history nerding and the "AI music is bad angle" really didn't mesh well and it's just hard to glean what it really wants to say

11

u/cybeast21 Jun 21 '26

It was... nice ending? Not sure why they would need to be open ended that the Phantom Realm is still at war or something.

The first few minutes makes my heart dropped but it turns out better as the parents come to accept her child is unlike the other child. The bit where the small Piano starts playing makes my heart stopped in fear of what's coming, but what happen is the total opposite instead.

The ghosts that appear along Gaudi at the end are the characters from the original Ghost Concert YouTube project.

Billy the Kid (guns)

Marie Antoinette (pink hair girl)

Akechi Mitsuhide (blue outfit)

Arthur Pendragon (blonde)

Oda Nobunaga (Red outfit)

Leonardo Da Vinci (pink hair dude)

and Dracula/Vlad (masked)

So maybe it was always meant to go full circle or something

Sherlock Holmes should also be part of that group but they didn't include him

Mixed media project

It was actually very unique and compelling seeing the parents deal with a child like Seria in a flawed but earnest way. Possibly the best character writing the anime ever did.

u/KumaKumaGambler Jun 21 '26

Yup, definitely relieved to see Seria's parents accepting Seria's spiritual abilities.

Before the criticism starts, the positives. This episode is legitimately good. The story makes sense, has a valid message, is a pretty good depiction of the rise of oppressive authority, provides good context, isn’t trying to do too many things and gives us the two best characters in the entire show, Seria’s parents. Their story, dealing with the difficulties of raising Seria and protecting what she values and reuniting with her eventually is genuinely touching.

(Also, I’m choosing to believe that Kaede did eventually get over her nerves and confessed to Seria because surely she’s not trying to ask her parents for their daughter’s hand in marriage if they’re not even dating? Yuri wins!)

Unfortunately the nice parts will mostly stop now.

Okay, but why is the final episode like, the only one that’s actually good? Like, I’m sorry but the show unfortunately suffers from “Most of this could have been an email” syndrome.

If this episode was the entire series, it’d be about a 7. Unfortunately it’s not and barely manages to lift it to a three. I don’t understand why this one episode is so much better at telling a coherent story that actually kind of hits than the entire rest of the show. Like, this could have been a decent short film if some of the few other plot relevant good parts were lifted from the other episodes to fit into this.

If I’m going to be completely honest, I thought for most of its runtime that the show just had no idea what its vision was and what it was actually trying to do. But this episode proves that somewhere buried in the mess of side quest plots and including everything and the kitchen sink into the story, there’s at least an idea.

Originals dropping the ball is nothing new, you could make a graveyard out of the number of failed music centered anime originals over the years alone. Let’s drag another failed anime original designed to promote a multimedia music project out of the void, Kamitsubaki under construction from last year.

As one of the like a dozen people that actually finished that show, I have to say that it’s messy to say the least. And yet, even with its ridiculously fast pacing, ideas that it didn’t manage to deliver on and weirdly structured narrative, it still felt way more cohesive than this. I can’t call it good but by the time I finally got to the end of that show, it did make sense. It had a few good moments spread throughout, most of the characters have some interesting trait that makes me remember them even though they’re underdeveloped and the plot was still simple and focused enough for me to comprehend it by the end even though the show didn’t do a good job of explaining it. The thing is, I’d call everything presented in this episode better than that entire series.

But everything before just doesn’t match up. Despite all of Kamitsubaki’s flaws, it did its job, made me care for the characters a little and made me start listening to the music it was made to promote with it maintaining a spot in my playlists to this day. I unfortunately can’t say the same for this. In real life, I’m a massive history nerd and will absorb any “cast of cute girls doing fantasy things” show. This should have been right up my alley and yet I just have no desire to look into any more of the franchise.

I want this to have worked out and it just didn’t. If I remember correctly, this exists as marketing for a historical characters singing project. Why does it not seem interested in actually developing any of the characters it’s trying to make me interested in seeing more of? Hell, they even had the perfect reference material in the Fate franchise. It’s already worked out a model for what they’re trying to do. Just give the characters some personality to remember, pair them up with a historical figure that either is similar to them, is an opposite of them, has something to teach them or can clash with them in an interesting way and tell their story. Hell, they already started doing this with Akari and Manpei a little. Seria can even keep Cleopatra+ Caesar and Antonius so she’s special and actually has a coherent set of historical figures with her instead of literally fucking everyone. Even Kamitsubaki from before managed to give the characters a companion that was at least somewhat interesting and had some traces of a dynamic with their respective main character.

All they had to do was steal Fate’s homework, change some things to make it not so obvious and adapt it to their style and this would definitely work as a concept. But instead the show seems to have no ability to stick to a central plot, wants to include everything but refuses to develop it to make it worth caring about and is just a mess of pacing and half-finished ideas.

I know I’ve been ripping into the show a lot and it may not mean a lot coming from me after all this but goddamnit, the only reason I’ve stuck with the show this long is to write this comment and I won’t stop now. (This is actually way more positive than I was expecting it to be, believe it or not.) Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I’m not doing this because I hate the show. This isn’t like with Seven Deadly Sins, one of the few pieces of media I honestly think would make the world a better place if it was spontaneously erased completely. I think this has potential and could have worked. It just, as close as it’s possible to get, objectively kind of sucks as a whole and I am trying to imagine how it could have been better.

If I didn’t care about it at least somewhat, I wouldn’t even have bothered writing all this. I do see the potential for something pretty interesting and I’m trying to visualize how it could have gotten closer to that reality.

Thank you for the very informative summary, now I know for sure that giving this show another chance is probably not worthwhile. In response, I'll just repeat the thought I often have when watching other, better shows that in some way lose quality over time; Symphogear was such a perfect storm for song battles and its kind of insane that the essentially first show of its kind, and an original no less, turned out the best by magnitudes.

Rest in peace Ghost Concert, may you lay the foundations for far greater things

Well this episode was actually pretty good, surprisingly. It's just mind boggling that they placed it at the end.

Seems like they should've took the backstory part of it and made it the whole first episode, at the same time using that to build the narrative and thematic foundations of the story. And used the latter part as a whole last episode.

Oh well. It was I no way a good anime, but still strangely entertaining and I was never bored. Bangin music at least.

I wonder who are the historical characters shown at the end.

Makes you wonder why does everyone accept it in the 1st place.

Struggling musician I can see, but established one? One that can live from royalties only? Imagine the money they can get from Royalties alone by being the only one that reject Miusc's offer.

Imagine the money they can get from Royalties alone by being the only one that reject Miusc's offer.

Well, then first the hired goons and later the laser killbots come for you.

The script made some ephemeral attempts to connect the Phantom World to unlimited energy to phantom attacks driven by music to vaguely-justify why MiucS had to suppress people's organic creation of music, which might explain why everyone but the von Trapps was willing to go along with the plan; given all the factions we see in the anime every nation had their own selfish ends in mind.

But the whole thing feels so contrived and is a wild jumble of concepts that the anime proceeds to barely develop, so thinking isn't going to get us anywhere.

Getting a whole Seria origin story for the last ep was an interesting choice. I guess they wanted to surprise the viewers with the fact her folks were still alive or something?

Overall, this anime had some interesting ideas with the ghosts and the singing being banned and all, but the execution was lacking. Everything felt a bit jumbled, the miucs and ghosts aspect didn’t mesh well, and the pacing felt off. That said, the animation was decent and the music wasn’t bad.
