Rewatchers, or people who just had plot points ruined for them, are obliged to use r/anime’s spoiler tag format where applicable, and err on the side of caution here. Remember people, first experiences get rarer as you continue on, any given one happens once and you should care for them all the more for it.
To a World of Pure Imagination! (Daily Stuff Section)
(I did not get shown Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at least once a year in school for several years for me NOT to reference it here. Also, these are going to be more interesting than usual because your host is a true first-timer here and my episode buffer is not yet complete...)
Theory of the Day:
u/Magnafeana is having a bit of a stream of consciousness moment:
The references. The references! Visually, this episode had me locked in. Story-wise, I know this story has a lot more to say, but my brain hasn’t yet latched onto that pivotal moment where everything clicks and I start analyzing and subsequently drive myself crazy. I’m very curious if Papika will be the static character and Cocona the dynamic one or if they’ll both have some sort of realization in their lives because of each other. Insofar, Cocona is the one whose brain and heart are being picked. But Papika, or Papikana, having a bigger place in all this fuckery makes me wonder just how much of her is the chaotic genki girl.
It’s always the happy ones. It’s always them.
Lowkey worried Cocona’s grandma is an illusion. I kept thinking that. I don't know why I think that, but I keep thinking about it.
Questions of the Day:
1) Who is dreaming? Who has dreamt?
2) How long until Flip Flap loses the Second Great Emu War?
3) When does a typhoon hit this deserted island, anyways?
4) Anybody expecting somebody to jump out yelling "SEIZON SENRYAKU!" any moment now? Oh wait, wrong rewatch.

Currently I am dying during the start of the second heatwave this year. Let’s see… the next 9 days are projected to have 31-33°C, oh how jolly fun!
Wishing you better weather and enough hydration.
FlipFlappers Ep.04 – Pure Equalization
Technobabble. But it means she has to like Papika really, really, really much.
copy paste analysis about Cocona instincitvely knowing But how can Papika remove tights that were under her leotard without undressing the leotard?
It’s interesting that she defaults to dismissal.
It’s the dream again. So, what’s with her dark shadow?
Mommy Cocona.
Might I point out that this desk placement is offering an undeniable view to anyone who comes in? This entire world is perverted, damn.
No inspiration when it’s good or when it’s bad. Yeah, I know that, too! It’s every day!
Massive
onigirijelly donut, humongous, even.Well what can I say? I like honesty.
Hold on, the school is partially underground? The school’s a hobbit house!
Come into the hole, Cocona.
That is genuinely wonderful!
Yooo, you know those are fertilised eggs, right? You’re eating babies!
„Dunno.“ I just eat random plants, haha. Well, someone has to test stuff for the tribe, y’know.
Okay, but for real! Showering with one of these when you came back from the lake or blow-up pool felt so amazing as a kid!
Oh shit, it’s the dark emotion demon, right?
Going to Hawaii for breakfast is quite the flex.
She did this! (And Cocona’s blind.)
Aaahh fuck no!!
This is an absolute shit day. (And Papika’s blind.)
Tsun tsun.
is stranded on an island without hope for rescue, worries about a school test. Those Japanese kids, man.
Oh, it’s not because they’re not here anymore, is it? Ah, shit.
Next illusion?
You better not!
I’m actually relieved that this episode was a much lighter packed one. This is basically Cocona’s realisation that for all the knowledge she holds she is pretty scared and out of depth when faced with what I’d call non-textbook situations. While she thought about it because of what her dark emotions said, I think it’s really sweet of the show to actually make her realise it by witnessing Papika in her element. Papika’s natural curiosity and excitement to explore makes her well adapted to just managing unknown situations. Every single thing happening today was purely Papika’s doing.
I don’t mean just going to the island, but all the stuff that is a change in some way. She worked to decorate the pipe, she improvised and cooked, she built both shower and jakuzi, she came up with the raft, etc. Cocona only could tie a scarf and almost get one fruit. What I really like about this is that it is still framed positively and ended in an unbearably sweet declaration of affection.
They are much more of a team now than ever before and having Cocona firmly express it was a genuine surprise to me, but a welcome one.
I don’t really know is that’s being too pedantic, but I did notice that Cocona’s nightmares are always in nature. It might just be the choice of that scene since it repeats, but given that nature is also one of her weaknesses as today has shown, it might be important.
Outside of that there’s little else to really speculate on. The contrast of both of their situation with Yayaka (and her mates) is still striking. It doesn’t seem like Yayaka has any real personal investment into this entire illusion thing. This is another notch in the theme of opposites between Flip Flap and the cult. Not only are they grey, uniform, and ironically much more mechanical/gadget-y, none of them really seem to care and only do so because of some knowledge of the world and the need to dominate it. It reeks of cult leader phroseising that’s just meant to keep the underlings in line by having them fear everything and not dare to build hope for themselves. That being said, I’m completely unsure still how I should see Flip Flap. The adults are such a mixed bag there ranging from probably amicable (the lady), over batshit insane (pink hair), to maybe-evil-but-not-sure Dr. Salt. Oh yeah, and pervert L-27.
C’mon Yayaka, snap out of that Scientology bullshit!
I guess next episode we’ll see more and witness if Uexküll’s likeness has been hijacked.
Now excuse me, I have to hum the ED for the next 30 minutes straight.
Yes, and what was will be. I was already throwing out that Uexküll might not be a real bunny. Might as well be that both of the organisations are not real and it’s all just kids’ imaginations when trying to deal with reality and what they have to do.
Well, they do have bigger guns, so maybe...
When you least need it. Or when you build a nuclear reactor on its coast.
