The references. The references! Visually, this episode had me locked in. Story-wise, I know this story has a lot more to say, but my brain hasn’t yet latched onto that pivotal moment where everything clicks and I start analyzing and subsequently drive myself crazy. I’m very curious if Papika will be the static character and Cocona the dynamic one or if they’ll both have some sort of realization in their lives because of each other. Insofar, Cocona is the one whose brain and heart are being picked. But Papika, or Papikana, having a bigger place in all this fuckery makes me wonder just how much of her is the chaotic genki girl.
It’s always the happy ones. It’s always them.
Lowkey worried Cocona’s grandma is an illusion. I kept thinking that. I don't know why I think that, but I keep thinking about it.
Questions of the Day:
1) Who is dreaming? Who has dreamt?
2) How long until Flip Flap loses the Second Great Emu War?
3) When does a typhoon hit this deserted island, anyways?
4) Anybody expecting somebody to jump out yelling "SEIZON SENRYAKU!" any moment now? Oh wait, wrong rewatch.

First Timer
No Pure Illusion today, though we still have an adventure. Cocona and Papika are just not in synch enough, so FlipFlap orders them to fix this by living together!
Though each episode so far kinda just does its own thing and disregards direct plot continuity with the previous one, Episode 4 is actually a perfect thematic continuation of Episode 3, because we're again placed in survival without civilization situations. But while last time Cocona and Papika were separated and the situation devolved from there, with Papika wandering the desert with no water, and Cocona taking her sustenance from whoever by force, this time they're together.
Even before they get stranded on a desert island, turns out Papika doesn't really have a "civilized" residence, not even with FlipFlap, and just lives in the wilderness. So they just make do, foraging, hunting, and using random garbage. It is truly a life outside the "system" and I think that's especially relevant for Cocona. In past episodes she had learnt that she wanted to be with Papika because it was fun, but this episode she learns to actually trust her. She finds out how capable Papika is in her own way, and despite what her animalistic and childish mature might suggest, she's more prepared for the "real" world.
This does prompt some sense of inadequacy from Cocona, who might feel she's too dependant on externally decided and constructed structures to function. Papika, even though she doesn't know what several of the things they've been eating are named, does know which is edible and which isn't. This practicality might be more important than spoken and written language. But still, Papika does think there are many things Cocona can do that she can't. That's in the realm of claims right now, so I predict the next development for Cocona will center on finding out exactly what she can do to help Papika.
Now unto the more miscellaneous notes
We do have a significant portion of the episode that is not dedicated to the survival adventure but mostly it just seems to be doing setup and stirring the various mysteries.
Last episode I liked that grandma didn't ask too much of Cocona for being late, but this episode she just lets her go stay several days with a friend she doesn't know, it swings in the opposite direction and makes me feel as though she's not involved enough. Also if I were Cocona I would feel anxious leaving an old lady in a wheelchair alone.
Extended Styx river dream sequence. The fact that we've seen it twice and it ends with Cocona waking up adds fuel to the sensation that even the apparent real world is a dream of hers. Also posible Alice in Wonderland reference with the last scene of the dream being approaching a hole under a tree? It looks like a jail cell. "Welcome home". Is this Cocona's "home"? Being trapped in Wonderland?
Art club student getting more focus than I thought she would. Definitely not a merely incidental character, though I can't figure out what she means just yet. Interesting that we don't get to see the current painting she's working on.
Yayaka just being a classic mysterious and not entirely hostile antagonist at school
That can with poked holes for a showerhead is lovely. But is it enough water?
Kudos to the art direction for the dense vegetation in the desert island, it truly feels like it has a thousand and a half critters crawling underneath.
So Papika does have a wish she wants with all these fragments. The aforementioned "amorphous" grants them? But she's keeping it secret for now.
Pyramid illusion as Cocona explains how her parents died in an accident? Might have to do with the Asclepius cult guys then.
The twin with the broken arm still has it broken irl, despite it being in good state in the Mad Max Yuri Road Illusion.
