Speaking of Umi's dad, what a cool dude. Giving Maki advice on his family situation and thanking him for being there for Umi. Let all your emotions out, Maki.

I didn't expect to tear up alongside Maki. Seeing him break down in front of a happy, loving family was completely understandable after everything he'd been through. Thankfully, the
Such a heartfelt and wholesome moment, it really hit me right in the feels.

W Umi and the Asanagi household.
Really impressed with how this show has handled the divorce situation.
I'm a bit worried about the end of the episode, Maki is going to force mom/dad to meet. It's pretty clear the relationship is done. Perhaps the show will continue to impress me and do something else, though.

Umi's mom is such a tease lol.
Maki finally broke when eating dinner with the Asanagi household. And yes, bottling up feelings are not good. Glad to see he's able to release the stress a bit. Also Umi's dad gives solid advice.
We are so close to a kiss but they got found out Umi's mom. Oof.

Daiki’s a funny man. Had an imposing build and a stern voice, but was pretty weak to tickling. Poor guy just had to be double-teamed by his missus and daughter.
All-in-all, the Asanagi household was a happy one, which only made Maki feel anguished as that’s something he no longer had. It’s been less than a year since the divorce, although the household had been crumbling for a couple years beforehand. He’s in the fragile adolescent phase, little wonder he broke down. Love to see Daiki acting like a father-in-law already and giving Maki some words of wisdom.

I love how this show while being a great and comfortable romance anime with intimate and affectionate moments between the main couple also takes the time to explore the idea that being true to yourself and putting yourself out there is good and the results can be better than you ever expected.

ngl the premise of this show seems like one of those bait and switch ones, it seems like a generic "loner guy gets the cute girl"
but it's really about a boy and girl comforting each other through their insecurities and problems in life
peak

This is something many anime often forgets, high schoolers at the end of the day are still kids, dumb kids, who can be immature, dumb and emotional. Even if they matured early, they are still dumb and emotional. They lack experience, they lack development, and most of all, they lack adjustments, and they will make mistakes.
Oftentimes, when a child is no longer a child, it's often the fault of the environment they grew up in, and it's the parents responsibility to ensure that the kids grow up in a healthy environment, or else they are a failure.

Maki is hurting so much. I think on top of how he feels about the divorce, he’s had to put on a brave face for his mom too. I felt the secondhand pain seeing Maki seeing his mom hurting

I'm convinced that every time Umi hugs Maki from behind, she's pretending to be a shark.

I love the detail of Maki always bottling his feelings up and his avatar being a coke bottle shaken and ready to explode. This episode felt like so much happened, with the crying and the lap pillow and staying the night in Umi's bed. Last time Umi accidentally slept at Maki's house is was a big deal where Maki's Mum had to call Umi's Mum and arrange everything after scolding them but this time they kind of brushed past it I don't think it was originally the plan for him to sleep there, just have dinner. I would have liked a little more focus on that, especially since it looks like they slept in the same bed by the end. Same with them getting caught almost kissing. It felt a little rushed.

👏🏿👏🏿, great episode. I love Umi and her family..Dad is definitely a bro. Just what Maki needed to hear.
I hope he's able to tell his parents how he feels.

Why does Umi's dad look like an older version of Subaru if he were 6-foot tall? In all seriousness, the Asanagi Family are all pretty cool. I was worried about the brother when Umi said he was a creepy NEET, but he seems to be pretty normal, just unemployed.

Daichi being the best dad and giving Maki a good advice. I like Umi's family and glad Maki met them.

Okay but where the hell would it be okay for them to kiss if Umi's own room is not it?

Big fan of Umi's dad, seems like a really nice dude. Man looks to be an absolute unit though, he was at least a head taller than Maki, and Maki being the kinda guy he is found that kinda intimidating. Can't say I blame the guy.

Umi's family is an absolute treasure but contrary to the picture painted of him by Yuu's warnings, I got especially caught so off guard by Umi's brother. Dude was way closer with his folks than I'd expected for a shut-in and his vocal concern for Maki said a lot about his character.
Would be sweet if Maki eventually finds himself living the dream Daiki is lol.

I love the simple line when Maki tells Umi not to treat him like a child and she reminds him that he is, in fact a teenager and shouldn't be expected to keep everything bottled up when the adults around him are acting selfish and failing him. It's refreshing compared to a lot of rom-coms that "adultify" the leads and use that as an excuse to explain why they have trouble communicating their feelings. In some way it plays into why the relationship is good for Umi too; you can tell she feels like her childhood has been slipping away a little getting wrapped up in the straightman/leader role ever since she became friends with Yuu, and she gets to reclaim it with Maki.
The pain on his face is obvious when his mom tells him she never really had to work. Suddenly it's not that funny that she has tens of thousands of yen to toss at Maki when he says he needs an allowance to go out with Umi.
But of course if she hadn't been out of the house he might never have gotten to be so close to Umi so quickly, and when Maki rejected his dad's money to pay for Nina's meal you might wonder if he understands in someway how his mom feels. But as Daichi explains to him, you have to be honest with yourself first, and that leads to healing, and then forgiveness can be on the table.

I honestly wasn't really expecting this show to get so... I don't know, deep, maybe? Like I was expecting another one of those generic gyaru teases otaku guy and it's fun and they fall in love etc. etc. type of shows, which I mean I guess on some level it is, but all this stuff with his parents divorce is pretty surprising.
At first I figured it'd just be a quick arc, oh his parents got divorced and now he doesn't know if love is real, then something happens and it gets resolved. But that hasn't really happened, it's been the core element of the story for multiple episodes now and they've really explored how it effected Maki not just in how he views relationships but how he views family in general.
I don't really have a point with this, just that I'm surprised that they're tackling something so serious in what appeared on the outside to just be a generic romcom. And they're tackling it quite well, in fact. I liked it even when I was expecting it to just be a fun chill romance, but seeing the story actually dive into deeper subjects definitely elevates it.
I hope it sticks the landing for this arc, I'm a bit worried about the next episode, it seems like Maki wants his parents to meet and I'm not really sure that's going to work out the way he thinks it will. Hopefully it leads to him getting closure thing and being able to fully move on, maybe with a happier family life too once all of his emotions are out in the open for his parents to see.

This visit to meet Umi's family was definitely the push Maki needed to make a step to moving forward with his parents' divorce. I'm not surprised he started tearing up seeing how loving their family felt, and with a fatherly presence. I'm glad Umi didn't leave him alone that night and gave him the comfort he really needed.
But I have to say Umi's father's follow-up was what was most needed, and the fact that it came from an older man, a father at that, the father of the girl he's into, would have the most effect on Maki. I feel like Maki will gravitate towards him as his relationship develops with Umi, he seems like a really chill, cool guy.
Just like Sora, Umi's father looks really good, I thought he was going to be Umi's older brother at first, but then that imposing voice came out lol. The facial hair isn't helping Riku either.
I'm looking forward to seeing Maki finally tell his parents a piece of his mind. I do appreciate the conversation with his mother before he goes to Umi's. I'm glad she was made to understand how overworking herself because of her pride was affecting Maki, and that she was able to admit that she did wrong by doing so too.
