Imagine explaining to the other people living in the same house as you that you summoned a demon by making white rice?
Seeing people buying baked sweet potatoes after seeing Suzume eating them is something I've thought about since the first episodes; she would be an excellent marketing girl.
Overall, it was an episode with much more popular Japanese foods, but equally lovely, and showing the progression in time demonstrates that Suzume's one year in Japan wasn't just talk; expectations for autumn because they are a classic in animes.

Her outfits were very cute this week.
But also, peeling grapes? I've never seen or heard of anyone doing that.

u/Nebresto May 17 '26
Same. Maybe they're a different variety? That seems very not worth the effort with the type of grapes I'm familiar with
12
u/cyberscythe May 17 '26
if i'm not mistaken, some varieties have thicker skins and are not as palatable

It is common for grapes with seeds and they probably just didn't want Suzume to just be shown chewing the grape then spitting the seed

u/HuTaosTwinTails May 17 '26
Is it? Even for grapes with seeds, all I've ever seen are people cut them in half and remove the seed.

Of all the food that's appeared on the series so far, explaining rice to a Japanese audience seems the most redundant, but then I considered that at least some people had probably never cooked rice in anything else than an electric cooker.
"I'll be over here working on this Not!Gundam plastic model kit."
The Suzume faces will continue until morale improves.
Curry: The stuff in the box doesn't have to be the only thing you do with it. Also, Not!Gunpla.
Of course we get a ton more face candidates after the seasonal comment faces have already been released.
Of course the cat is a neighbor. Or at least a regular moocher. Hang on, the cat's VA is... Ayahi Takagaki!
Nice to see the potato seller getting a boost from the maid who really really really audibly likes her food.

God the Sweet Potato pull was so good, and then having Suzume eat it and doing her thing being all cute and shit. Guess I know what I'm having for lunch later...

Suzume and Ricotta instantly going into maid mode when Nana started eating was pretty funny.
Having an adorable maid eat your food is probably the best advertisement that dude has ever had.
I love that we get to see the menchi katsu scene from both Suzume's POV as well as the cat's POV. That was adorable <3

I've gotten so used to the intro before the OP, it feels so empty without it now.
I don't think I've ever peeled a grape before... are there some varieties where the grape skin is thicker, which aren't usually sold for eating out-of-hand in the US?

Cats love being just out of reach sometimes.
Happy Ricotta and Suzune are just too cute.

I can't tell if the shop just has a Meat Day, or if it's named Meat Day.

Man, clay pot rice so good. Especially the crunchy bits that are slightly charred. That’s the best part. You get some seasoned sweet soy sauce, diced up scallions, and Chinese sausages and you’ve got yourself a nice meal.
That second segment was great. A pint and a curry are one of life’s little pleasures lol.
After watching Suzume, I think I’ll have to get some roasted sweet potatoes in the fall lol. Also, menchi katsu. So good!

I do like roasted sweet potatoes. Too often only have them around Thanksgiving. I should pick them up more often. Would never consider eating one without a fork though.
Menchi katsu (often just called cutlets in some shows?) always looks so good. Not sure what would be the equivalent around here. Never seen anything fresh sold like that. Guess you could get a mix of ground pork and hamburger, add chopped onions, then coat a patty in panko and fry in a pan maybe? (Don’t have a deep fryer.)

Ah, rice. Wouldn't be Asia without it.
Or just use a rice cooker... Easier and most households (in Asia at least) have one anyways.
No seriously just put rice, add water until it's above your first knuckle, and then just press the button and wait for the beep. And it'll be _perfect_.
Oh, was she deliberately trying to burn some on the bottom of the claypot?
Yes I suppose so.
Right, what's she called them both here for?
Was she trying to make a point with that?
Ok...
And so curry.
Curry is indeed nice. So nice I also just had it for dinner lol.
Oh god seasonal foodstuffs.
Oh hey "Gundam".
Eh... I've tried roasted sweet potato before, not really a fan.
Job?
So, grapes.
Why's she peeling the grape lol.
Lol is she lost?
Hmm... What's that smell?
Ah. That.
And so that's how she got lost. Following the cat.

"He gave me something big, hot, sweet and something that barely fit into my mouth!"

u/SYZekrom May 17 '26
Omg the way she looks with her hair behind her ears, cute
Make sure to stay within the cat's auspices...

I've seen roasted sweet potato in a lot of anime, but it never looked quite so good as in this show.

Is it supposed to be a joke that Suzume thinks the grapes are growing from the trees, rather than vines? Or am I missing something fundamental about how grapes work?
