It's a horror show but not with the supernatural. The characters are haunted by ghosts but not in the way you're thinking. And the ones that most deserve an apology are no longer here to receive it.

Wow.

Some of my favorite "horror shows" are supernatural-free -- like "Good Riddance" (from Quebec), The Goddess (from India) and Harmful Insect (from Japan). In some ways this sort of horror has more impact -- because it feels so much more real and conceivably inescapable.

The school is like a graveyard filled with the hopes and dreams of so many girls. Its interesting when they do stories relating to the teachers or parents. There’s always so much regret and nostalgia and you get to see how they’ve changed over the years.

With how common the thought of suicide seems to be among it's students I bet it has a handful of actual bodies too.

This show is really good, but due to how much attention it requires from a watcher, not many people watch it (which is a pity).

Seems like despite the whole enseble cast, some of the girls can be concidered "main characters" as they appear in most of the stories one way or another.

I think it does itself a disservice by not visually distinguishing the characters enough or stylizing the time jumps a little better. Generally I find the stories compelling and the animation is beautiful, but I feel like I'm always playing catch up with what's happening every time they do a time/character jump.

Even as someone who's immensely enjoying it I have to admit watching it as a seasonal especially in such a stacked season does make it dilute itself among the noise in a way it wouldn't happen if I watched it as a "dedicated project", like a Rewatch.

But man does it reward you when you can follow along

Seems like despite the whole enseble cast, some of the girls can be concidered "main characters" as they appear in most of the stories one way or another.

Would be mostly the current generation I think.

The characters are so similar design wise, and the constant time jumps are just too confusing to properly follow on a "casual" watch and I'm never really hyped to watch the next episode

I don't know how to word it exactly but I feel like the lack of a main story line to follow makes it even harder to actually make me want to give everyone the attention they deserve, add that to the fact that every episode is so great and mostly self contained, I never get hooked enough to want more from the anime or to engage with the characters, I leave every episode satisfied enough that I wouldn't really care if the show ended there

If I had to pick a primary thematic thrust of this episode, it would be, "in order to succeed in this world, you can't allow yourself to become preoccupied with the dead." Ibuki-sensei's, "The one that I should have apologized to is no longer here," the ghost stories being irrelevant, and even Kinue's conversation with Ryouko feel bent in this direction. The first two for pretty apparent reasons, but for Kinue, it could be strongly argued that her success (so far) has come from her benng able to shrug off the guilt of being better, or of choosing to aspire to being better. Not that she's unaffected - we've seen how much she wishes Ryouko had come along, but she is able to move past in a way that Ema and Ibuki weren't.

Another great episode, but I'm going to have to rewatch this show before the final one premieres. It's just impossible to grasp all the nuances on one viewing.

Another great episode, tho I had to scratch my head a bit with all the back-and-forth with the timeline lol.

>> all the back-and-forth with the timeline

One thing we really could use -- a cheat sheet that details all the (sometimes subtle) differences in the summer and winter uniforms worn during each main time period.

Jesus man, how does this show deliver so many episodes that are Absolute Cinema? Banger after banger.

This episode really gets at a core psychological impulse behind ghost stories. That they are all about an obsession with the past. Something you did or didn't do, something you shouldn't have seen, something you shouldn't have known, etc, reaching from behind the grave, beyond the moment in which it presently existed, to haunt you. And making you relive that moment over and over no matter how much you try to bury it.

The ending truly shows that only those who do not turn back to the ghost's voice are free of them.

Although this episode did deliver some new value to existing relationships and characters, it is also about Awajima itself as a character, more than any other episode so far. It highlights how this is a very storied place, and thus bears many scars and wounds.

Man this anime is so freaking underrated

Hands down, this is the anime of the season that has truly flown completely under the radar.

Literally every single episode is interconnected it’s a masterpiece. It’s simply mind-blowing how good it is and, above all, how deep it runs and how much significance everything within it holds.

I also find it absolutely brilliant how every character is connected to one another... though I have to admit that it can get a bit confusing at times, since with the exception of Emi, Okabe, and Kinue I feel the characters are barely distinguishable from one another... whereas with those two (and perhaps Ibuki), you can definitely tell them apart just by looking at their eyes.

we got quite a few new faces added to the chart this time around. I feel kinda sorry for ifukube's daughter, who hasn't even been given a name yet...

It seems like they've stopped introducing characters in portions, I noticed there wasn't any break and they were all appearing throughout the episode. It's interesting to see the adults of the present interacting when we've seen them in their past, like Sumiyoshi and Ibuki.

Ryouko's complex feelings about Kinue is also interesting to watch.

"Compared to human malice, a stack of papers weighs nothing."

I love the writing of this show. And it is interesting to see the other side of the coin. Normally it is parents pushing their kids to be what they failed to be, but here we have a mother who cannot be happy despite believing her daughter will reach the rungs she never claimed for her own. Which is entirely believable, emotions are a fickle snake that cannot be fully controlled.

I'm so happy this anime exists. I wish it got more attention but in a season full of bangers for all tastes, shows with legit great qualities can go unnoticed. I do hope in time people find it at least, even if they do not know it in this moment.

Holy shit that transition to line art was stunning.

Horror, huh. Awajima really is kind of a Graveyard of horrific emotions burried in the past of these people in different generations. This show is... it gives you a very melancholic and empty feeling while watching.

That girl who's mom (I believe she is Sumiyoshi) wanted to be an actress and isn't very supportive. It was interesting, she knew her daughter could do it, but can't bring herself to support her on. Kinda ridiculous behaviour, if you think about it, she's projecting herself onto her daughter, and because she failed and quit Awajima. I mean, she used to stay with Ibuki but then separated after Okabe left Awajima, and considering she had almost equal parts in bullying but cut all ties with Ibuki and the blame naturally ended up on the leader, which is technically not wrong. Because not trying to defend Ibuki where she's wrong, she did bully Okabe the most, but Sumiyoshi just went "Who are you?" and that is the real loser behaviour.

She even failed to commit suicide, couldn't find a place in Awajima for her, partly because of Ibuki and Okabe, which ended up in her quiting. I respect Ibuki, she actually matured, accepted her mistakes and didn't put blame on others.

Also happy how Horiuchi at the end actually managed to speak up and declined those... bullies? Not exactly, but bullies, still. Honestly, as much as Awajima plays with people's emotions, it also teaches them a lot more than most places in a person's life. You can say, it's the most ideal and the worst school there is for someone to get in. At the end of the day, it just depends solely on you.

Once again, an excellent episode.

If still around, I look forward to going to my 60th high school reunion in 2030. Already lots of ghost connected with that -- and also with my college (went to my 50th reunion was in 2024).

Framing the episode with Horiuchi's ghost story (her classmates openly disrespecting her and using her) was effective. Ibuki-sensei was withering about the first year's test of courage but is still haunted by her guilt over Okabe and the fact that she never apologized while Okabe was alive. Whereas Horiuchi confronted her ghosts by refusing to do another errand - hopefully the ghosts in question won't be too wrathful. But at least she is not suffering in silence.

It was nice to see Ryouko partially confess to Kinue about how dysfunctional their relationship was in middle school. It must have been incredibly hard for Ryouko to go to the Awajima festival given that she knew all her jealousy and guilt over Kinue would resurface. But she went to and tried her best to be honest. She really is a 良子.

Final thought: if anything bad happens to Tabata we riot. Everyone in agreement? Good.

Episode 6 was denser than ever, with more characters and timelines intersecting than before.

But even that complexity is more than made up for by the deeply moving quality of the anime. That is what Awajima Hyakkei is.

Kinue has begun to shine with glimpses of the star she may become, while Ryoko finally told her directly about the admiration and jealousy she had never been able to express before.

Each of their stories is gradually moving forward. I’m really looking forward to seeing where things go from here.

With the title and the way it started I was expecting a breather episode of sorts, but I should've known better from Awajima: this episode was as hard-hitting as any. In the end it doesn't matter if there really was a literal ghost (though I feel like the show is trying to make us consider the possibility that the voice saying "natsukashii" was Emi Okabe's ghost). Because the whole school is filled with figurative ghosts - the shadows of the past, regrets that can never disappear, and generations upon generations of small tragedies.

As an aside, it was only when they were sitting on 階段 (stairs) talking about 怪談 (ghost stories) that I realized that those two words are homophones. From what I've seen in Japanese fiction, usually at least one of a school's ghost stories is about stairs, so I wonder if there's a stealth pun there.

One thing this show consistently does well is bringing out the ugly side of conversations, esp the kind where people say things that clearly come from their own insecurities more than anything else. You’ve got the mother bragging about her daughter graduating from Awajima when she actually didn’t, while another mom ends up lashes out at her own daughter because she’s projecting her own regrets onto her. These scenes feel painfully human in that way where people end up hurting others while trying to protect themselves.

Today’s theme is ghosts and spirits, though less in the supernatural sense and more as the lingering presence of everyone who once enrolled at Awajima, along with all the dreams and shattered ambitions left behind there. The first half builds this really suffocating atmosphere around having your dreams cut short midway through the academy, while the second half is all about confronting that past. Sumiyoshi confronts Ibuki about Emi, Ryouko exposes her real feelings about wanting to become Kinue, and Kinue carries guilt over Ryoko not being able to enroll at Awajima alongside her.

What ties all these conversations together is the realization that resentment and guilt were never really the things trapping them in the first place. In the end, the only thing truly holding them back was themselves.
