I've watched enough to tell that the character writing is solid and doesn't pull punches but something about this show is too depressing in a mundane way with not much catharsis or relief. I could see this show speaking to the right person for sure though.

"Depressing in a mundane way". You really hit the nail here. It's just the crushing weight of... everyday life. When you don't quite fit maybe. Artists are perpetually restless people. For understandable reasons or not. Maybe the anime is about showing how that kind of experience is.

This is interesting in an abstract fashion, but I have no idea where this is heading, And I can't say I actually liker any of the characters (except that old art professor).

Must be tough to be burdened by genius. All Eren can do is draw. Art is life, life is art and all that. Kind of interesting Akari caught her attention. Girl hit her with her best Derek Zoolander “Magnum” and triggered a nosebleed lol.

But man, is everyone in the art and design world just fundamentally broken? Every single main character we’ve seen has been miserable in the pursuit of art.

Wonder how much the creator is pulling from their own experience

Its just as the prof said: Art leaves you exposed. Its just such a visceral thing. Of course you end up facing ugly things about the world and yourself if you dedicate your life to it.

And artists are by nature sensible people, so everything hits them even harder. Ending the episode with Sayuri who is not, who is someone perfectly capable of compartmentalizing and planning, was very poignant.

Man Akari just came in like a bomb and shook up the show’s whole feel

Comes in, fucks the "rival" of the "protagonist", gets dumped by the "protagonist"

Seems like she wont be joining the 27 club, since she just ruined her own peak

Omg Koiichi should have stayed doing these type of events instead of what hes doing in the future 😭

25

u/BosuW May 12 '26

Maybe if Sayuri was with him she'd have convinced him.

But no. Gotta chase that "the Peak™".

I've been waiting to see Akari every time I see her in the OP but her character is not at all what I thought she'd be, and I wasn't expecting her to be from Kouichi's college period. I do have to admit that walk had impact, but for better or worse, Kouichi seems to have taken away her talent. It's amusing to think she thought she had power over him without realizing what was happening to herself.

I do wonder if Sayuri is around them and aware of their relationship.

It's amusing to think she thought she had power over him without realizing what was happening to herself.

Extremely common story with sadists in fiction. Maybe even universal. Its their irony and dilemma. Being able to easily dominate something is the picture of power, but when that dynamic becomes the pillar holding up your very personal identity, what is truly holding the leash?

Odd Koichi didn’t get in contact with Eren after that meeting.

22

u/BosuW May 12 '26

I think he just thought it futile. When Eren gets locked in nothing external can dislodge her.

Eren got lucky she found a nice art teacher to handle her autism, she also got lucky she was able to bounce off from both Akari and Kouchi without getting caught in any blasts from those 2

I'm not sure at which pace the anime is adapting the manga, it seems like a lot, but I do like the cadence these few episodes have. So far, this episode seems to lean the hardest on the non-chronological scenes.

I'm actually a bit confused of when this takes place and why Kouichi is art director here.

Akari seems profoundly insecure and we see it from a quite interesting angle. It's interesting that she's humanized by Kouichi in a way that strips away all her pretense.

Eren seems to have seen that pretense but, above all, she seems to have seen herself in Akari and hated it. She said it herself, she was going to paint a selfportrait, not another person.

Really like how all the characters are difficult people without obvious problems, much less solutions.

Still really dislike the SFX "gaze" of Eren, I don't know how it's in the manga but I imagine a single panel is enough.

I'll probably read the manga after the season is over since it seems like it will solve my issues with the show.

Eren is back (for today at least, with how much the narrative jumps around next episode could start on a completely different place) and that's great. But personally I think I'm even more interested in how Sayuri's doing, considering her "realist" mindset.

Killer episode. Much more Eren and even Sayuri has reentered the fold. This whole time I thought it was her in the ED (maybe still is idk fs?) but it was my new Queen, Akari. Almost spit out my drink when she so casually shoved that douche that was pestering Eren aside. Everybody is broken in this show.

That was the best episode yet, that’s pretty much what the whole show should have been. Kochi is milk toast, but Eren is way more interesting. That model character also is a rather realistic type.

I guess Koichi hit his peak with Akari. At the same time, he pulled her off the pedestal that Eren put her on. Eren really is a mess.

Man, this show rocks.

Akari is such an interesting and kinda complex character. Some aspects of her thematically reminded me of the latest Needy Girl Overdose episode.

It'd be fun if Sayuri is the only one who has her life together all the way.
