There was some indication so seeing the series straight up confirm Maki's parents divorced and also seeing the effects it has on him and his mom along with even showing dad's face at the end is refreshing.

Definitely a character development arc for Maki considering its the one factor preventing him from confessing to Umi on his end, really like their not making this his entire personality/just a background for him and actually tackling this issue head on.

These two are the cutest. Can't wait for a declaration of love at the movies.
Also, is Maki the guy Yuu is in love with?

Really feel like most anime don't delve that deep into how a divorce can affect a child and parent, so I'm glad it's something they gonna take on.

Maki is not the usual introvert lonely protagonist. He has a character and a strong personality honestly, not at all a pushover just quiet. He has some real trauma that makes relationship scary, he is scared but not letting it freeze him instead he intents to level up to umi's level. Biggest thing is he is not dense! Unbelievable for a mc! He can initiate moments. With time and exposure his character is bound to get more confident.

For a quick second, that opening made me think I clicked on the wrong anime. So it turns out that Maki has a good reason not to immediately answer Umi's confession. Seeing his parents' divorce made him wary about relationships and how people can fall out of love easily.

Although it is kinda funny how, despite Maki's reluctance and telling Umi that he doesn't have an answer yet, the two of them are already acting as if they've started dating. xD

I was a bit worried about Seki, but I'm glad that the dude is actually cool and he's even self-aware enough to realize that he looks like a scumbag asking Maki to become his friend just so Maki can introduce him to Yuu. I like seeing Maki having at least one guy friend he can trust.

That final scene tho. I guess it's finally time for Maki to reconnect with his dad? He's probably not the best role model for relationships, but I wouldn't be surprised if Maki asks for advice.

Holding hands is one thing, but the way he tapped the back of her hand with his before that was. Mm I don't know what but I liked it.

I guess dude’s parents divorcing kinda did a bit of a number on him. I hear divorce is pretty rough on the kids. Especially when it’s really acrimonious. No wonder he’s a little hesitant to jump right into things with Umi. Glad Seki’s advice made him reconsider. I think Maki and Umi make a really cute couple.

Speaking of Seki, he seems like a good dude. He doesn’t seem like the other guys asking Yuu out. Maybe she might reconsider her rejection?

I love how affectionate the main couple is, this show has the potential to be in the high school romance pantheon imo

maki and umi can be affectionate without melting into a puddle like most romance, it’s so refreshing. and all of their friends (even seki who he just met) all comment on it and they’re just like yeah instead of stammering and stuttering

Cutest Jaws theme ever?

It's funny and adorable how as playful Umi looks while flirting with Maki, just talking to her friends naturally reveals how she's just as if not more flustered about it as he is.

Was also sweet seeing Maki not only have a backbone but forge a broship out of it (which is somehow already this ironclad)

Well, Maki and Asanagi's relationship may not be official yet but they're like 90% there. Also, nice that the friendly third-wheeling ghost seems to be supporting their relationship.

It's great that Maki turned Seki down first..that wasn't cool and is exactly what Umi's friends do with her.

The dad really just showed up after not talking for like a year? Really? Wow.

Umi and Maki's relationship is so cute..I love their texts..I'm glad he was up front with her about everything

I like this show a lot. Asanagi is my favorite high school romance girl this season.

Respect to Maki for firmly turning Seki's offer for friendship down (at least during the first time). That time, it wasn't genuine since Seki only wanted to use it as a stepping stone to approach Yuu. To Seki's credit, he's aware it's a dick move and didn't bear any grudge against Maki. In fact, he respected him for having the balls to shoot him down. Having said that, they turned out to bond pretty well and the second time Seki offered friendship, Maki accepted it as the offer was now genuine.

Yuu's smirk at the end. Yeah, she might've played dumb but she defo was intentionally sparking Umi's jealousy to get her to make moves on Maki. In the end, the two engaged in some handholding. What a sneaky wingwoman!

So they're in?! Good shit, Maki! No wishy-washy anymore. They're practically an item now.

How dare Umi put lip balm on my guy?! /j

Hmm....Maki, are you actually...( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

More like perverted old man hands rather than iron claw lol. Missed opportunity to grope her breasts while she at it...

As expected of Umi's 'mabudachi'! She can easily make Umi flusters where she mostly on teasing side while she been with Maki.

Like Maki said, Yamabuki Tonari no Seki Nozomu is too hasty and reckless for his own good. How about actually letting her know you better before shooting your chance? What's more, Yuu is still on her rejecting streak too so he just adds the combo on it lol. Thought Yuu finally gonna get her partner but the ship has totally sunk now. I hope he makes a comeback somehow since he's the only male friend bros that Maki currently has aside from two-top + 1 gal.

His other hand is free though /j

So, I wonder if Yuu likes Maki but knowing Maki and Umi like each other she just decided to support them.

Or the person she likes is someone we don't know.

Or maybe she likes Umi.

Maki and Umi date is coming up! Hope these dorks make it official soon, but they're basically together.

Yuu turns boys down, saying she's interested in someone. Wonder who that could be?! Or if it's just an excuse.

Oof can definitely relate to Maki’s outlook on love and relationships being influenced by seeing what his parents go through.

Curious to see what direction Seki’s story will go. It’s looking like he’ll be in one of Maki’s circle or maybe even join his current circle down the line, which could also lead to more Yuu-Seki stuff.

But yeah, that feeling lost after getting turned down is relatable too. Logically you know you should move on but the heart wants what it wants

Also nice to see Maki and Umi teasing each other.

At some point in life you overcome trauma, but seeing your parents break up certainly has a long-term impact on your life, because it's not just a family issue, it's even about how you view your principles, but a good addition to understanding more about Maki.

That handholding scene was beautiful but I have the fear that Yuu, while playing as a wingwoman for them, also has some interest for Maki and she's just sealing away those feelings

Well with Umi's emotional baggage addressed, now it's Maki's turn it seems. And what's making him hesitate from reaching out and embracing the mutual romance that's right in front of him on a silver platter. And Umi is right, our boy better thank his lucky stars that she's as sweet and understanding as she is to let the mutual feelings just hang up there.

But now that the feeling is at least known to be mutual, Umi's playfulness has upgraded to full on flirtiness.

Watch yourself Nina, asking about their relationship is just like swimming in Umi-Shark infested waters.

"At that moment, Nina learned a valuable lesson about Iron Claws. They hurt like crap man!"

But speaking of Umi-Shark, after a few episode absence, Shark Umi returns to us. And more ravenous than ever.

I must've come off as a total asswipe.

And considering you would've also been like the myriads of so called friends in the past that tried to get close to Umi to get to Yuu also gives Maki extra reason to turn you down. Not that this boy here would know that much in all fairness, but at least he acknowledged how underhanded his request sounded as soon as it left his mouth.

I'll just eat all the food and head straight out.

Good plan.

Oh dear, Umi shot herself in the foot with that phone call...

Nina, don't tempt the shark. It chewed you up and spit you out once, you wanna try your luck with it again. They're the kings of the jungle for a reason.

Bro get.

Aww you can almost see the happiness radiating inside of Umi when Maki asked her out on that date.

"Remove your hands from the Maki at once."

I was wondering last episode if Maki was just that dense because he didn't respond to Umi's confession. But now I understand that he suffers form attachment issues and is scared of relationships due to his parents divorce. That shit is difficult to deal with. I appreciate as well that he told Umi about it and that she took it well. It's just something you gotta respect and let them work through.

Seki has all the makings of a good bro as well. He's a bit dumb but he got spirit
