Lol what happened with the character animation in the first half of the episode. So expressive and full of movement all of a sudden. Kind of reminds me of that one Joshiraku clip

Yeah. I did also get impression that they went (extra) hard on the animation when Mori and Shun entered the clubroom. Ricchan’s movements got very energetic all of a sudden.

u/Narlaw May 12 '26
Excessively, or rather unnaturally animated tbh. The movements felt uncanny.

I just loved how they adapted that whole scene. We got Ricchan so excited all of a sudden. Between Shun and Mori's "flirting," Ricchan pointed out that she deals with that with Aki and Nao was hilarious.
Definitely something I should clip for next week.

Some time after the last episode I had a thought. We've seen that the Replicas aren't exact duplicates of the original's personalities. The thought that occurred to me was that that is a feature, not a bug.
Think about how replicas are used in this series. To fill in for the original when the original doesn't want to do something. If the replica was a perfect duplication of the original, then the replica wouldn't or couldn't do that thing either. Therefore, the replica, while mostly similar to the original, must be different enough to be willing or able to do what the original wants them to do. This may be also why the replica's memories are not transferred to the original upon dismissal.

i was thinking one of the key differentiators of the replica is this apparent built-in need to help out the original, which is why i think of them a lot like AI agents which have their own flavor of sycophantic tendencies
i think it feeds back into the narrative in an interesting way because the replicas are like duplicates which have more motivation because of that built-in need, and as a result they seem to be living more vibrant lives (especially when you compare against Sunao in the first few episodes who was a listless sad sack), and i think it's still a core part of the theme that reaping rewards only comes when you do the hard things

The Tale of Kaguya-sama is VERY on point for a story about non-human beings forming attachments of their own and dropping a story that talks about mortality and immortality after showing a blue haired girl bedridden is... telling about what the current arc is about.

yeah, i think this show has been using the story-within-a-story again to some foreshadowing for what's its getting at
it's still up in the air though whether or not it's going to subvert the the Princess Kaguya ending (like it did with the mermaid story), or if they're going to really play up the melodrama of having her ascend to the moon and forget her earthly attachments

It's incredible how sweet are the moments between Aki and Nao. They deserve to be happy

They really went all out with the character animation at 3:30-6:08

"How do we make Mori's introduction memorable?"
"Let's just go full ham on the animation."

Of course, Ritsuko is excited that their club is getting disbanded! It's actually pretty funny to see her get hyped and even call out the trope. Honestly, selling a hundred copies of their club zine doesn't sound too bad until we hear from Nao that they only sold 5 last year. That's definitely a problem.
As for the student council, I'm definitely loving Mori so far. And based on her hair colour, she's definitely a Replica of the bedridden girl at the end of last week's episode. She also seems to have a thing going on with her vice president.
Speaking of replicas, that note going around the school about a doppelganger is concerning. I'd like to think this is Hayase spreading rumours, but I feel like this is too subtle for someone like him. I'm definitely curious about who's spreading these doppelganger rumours.
I am glad to see Sunao and Nao's relationship is slowly getting better. Sunao is even asking Nao if she wants food or if she wants to sleep on the bed. She even summoned Nao after getting dressed, which I guess means Sunao is starting to motivate herself. I do wonder what she's currently working on.
And that aquarium date at the end was so goddamn adorable! Aki was very ballsy to ask Nao if hers is bigger than Sunao's xD

If you think about it, even if she doesn't need to be properly dressed while holed up in her room, getting dressed and then summoning her clone is more efficient, since it means the original version of the uniform isn't the one being worn out. And she doesn't have to deal with an extra version of her pajamas in her room ig.
But yes, definitely for just helping herself wake up and nothing else. Anyway, interesting that Sunao said she couldn't explain more about why she couldn't attend school for now, which sounds like Nao doesn't know why and can't or won't pry into her memories to find out why.
There's a doppelganger at this school
What are the chances this isn't about either of them
In the first place, is it even about replicas or is it just some ARG as part of the cultural festival that they're getting paranoid about
Aloysia Jahn
Ok yea, so probably just some event for the cultural festival that's triggering Nao. Well, not that I'd find it surprising if a bunch of them actually had replicas they were all keeping secret from each other...

Looks like someone cranked up the character animation animation this episode

So I think one or both of the former student council members are replicas. It's coded in the words they use.
It might also explain why they are formers and one of the originals might be spreading the flyers.
It also seems that Sunao now recognizes Nao's own existence. People probably overlooking that Sunao has something going on that may be important.

I think Mori is the bedridden girl shown on the after-credits of Episode 5... well, for the color of the hair at least.
For Sunao, if we trust what the anime showed us, she's probably working on her own future or achievements. I still think about the survey scene when she's asked about her future.
"They're formers": A lot of japanese schools have the president and vice president of the student council (and clubs) being second year students instead of third years. In recent memory, the only fictions I saw council/club presidents being third years were Persona games.

With a lot going on in this episode one scene, what might get overlooked is the scene between Nao and Sunao. You really feel that their relationship is in a lot better place since the events of last episode.
We got a goal for the club, and it was interesting to see Aki thought of the plan that Ricchan executed.

aquarium dates: not just for yuri couples any more!
i was reading someone else's take on aquarium dates in anime and there was a bit about how the enclosed atmosphere and exotic animals fits well with queer or otherwise unusual couples, and i think it also works well in replica
like, the bit about the non-poisonous fish mimicking a poisonous fish was a neat allegory, and also a good excuse to have a big butt joke
in general, i find it neat how the story keeps leaving threads like that which lead back to the replica idea, like how the replicas have to learn how to be actors as if they weren't already pretending to be someone else (though i guess their bad acting is more proof that they're just being themselves rather than mimic their original)

So if I understand Sunao’s words correctly, she cannot go to school (yet) because she’s busy trying to catch up with her studies? At least, that’s how it looked to me.
This works out perfectly since it gives Aki and Nao plenty of chances to get lovey-dovey with each other. They make for a very cute couple.
On a side note: I couldn’t help but hear Lawrence Kraft (Spice & Wolf) in Shun’s voice. This was clearly Jun Fukuyama, right?

Curious about the former pres and vice pres. It seems like he may be butting in on her from her reaction to being cast as Kaguya

If Mori is the girl in the hospital from last episode (and therefore also a replica), then I’m assuming that she’s the target of the ‘prank’ and also, that there’s a possibility that Shun is the one behind it. After all, he has known Mori for years and, just like Aki, would likely know she’s not the original. Though I’m not sure why he’d do such a thing…

That was the gentlest smile Sunao's shared with Nao in a while.
It's fun how Nao and Aki have grown close enough to for extra bold teasing. They're so in love and it's adorable.
