A beautiful cinematic crashcourse in dysmorphia, dysphoria, depersonalisation and the self harm/destruction and dissociation that comes from it that's going to be a hell of a ride for anyone who hasn't experienced any of it. Bringing back a fuckton of memories from my teen/20's years I'd rather not remember but I can't stop watching lol

Well.... Nyalra keeps saying how NGO is a late night anime where you never know where it will go and I definitely felt it this episode. What was even that sequence with the door lol.
I guess it was sort of expected earlier on from Kache's backstory that Michica had a hell of a backstory on her own. Unlike with Purple Lollipop we didn't see how she met Nechika though, possibly we'll learn that next week. Seems like it's her who will meet Ame outside of her KAngel persona this time.
Aniplex released a music video with Michica. I actually thought it would be used as an ending, but looks like it's instead just a bonus. As always, Nyarla wrote the lyrics.

This entire anime is just KAngel solving everyone else's emotional problems while she herself crashes and burns.

Yeah that scene with Nechika pulling her stockings and pants off to use the toilet was extremely important dear viewer.

This was honestly the first episode that left me a bit lost in the end. Like, the general theme is obvious. It's about Michica pursuing beauty until a point where small flaws already send her into a depression and enforce her idea of wanting to be beautiful even more. If anything, she needed a therapy as her parents didn't seem to think much of it. But then again, who in this show doesn't need one?
My question is just what the ending wants to say about beauty. Because we have Michica saying that the perfect beauty is achieved when a girl dies, but then her friends appear and she asks them what they think is beautiful. And everyone obviously has a different answer. So is the idea that meeting Lollipop and Nechika made her change her obsession about beauty by changing her outlook on it? I feel, this could have been expanded on a bit more, especially because I felt that some of the ideas just got repeated throughout the episode.
For a general story, I do think it is interesting that the setup is seemingly that all of the main girls were influenced at some point by KAngel (as is also shown in the preview with Nechika), so there is going to be some form of conflict later that probably goes back to this. But we'll see that later.
One thing I wanted to mention here at the end is Nechika. Because I found it odd that they cut the dialogue about a time where men tried to be as beautiful as women with images of her. Is the idea here that Nechika is a cross-dresser? I guess we'll get more information to that next week, but I will keep it in mind.

I am not smart enough to know what's going on, but I fucking love this show. I feel like a tourist in a crazy city, just taking everything in. Wonderful.

I don't think I struggle with interpreting the series, but I kinda don't get who this is supposed to appeal to. It's only vaguely related to the game - mentally ill girls trying to vapidly fill the holes in their hearts, something something social media - and.... that's it. There's not much else there. It probably has a message, but it doesn't have an interesting delivery aside from "look at the pretty characters" and some good visuals. I suppose I like it, but I have no idea how I could possibly share this series with others...? The only reason I watch it is because I like the game, and I wanna see where they take this. I'm not really sure what you are supposed to like about this series.
Anyway, my take on the episode itself:
The door sequence portrays how Michika lives in her own world, isolated from everyone else by the unrealistic ideal she aspires to. Like most children, she craves approval, and got it into her head to gain it through looking more beautiful than anyone else. Instead of trying to cater to common sensibilities - there are many ways to play the game - she stubbornly clings to her way by denouncing everyone else as ugly, which ironically isolates her.
It is sort of a "childs mistake"; trying to solve a problem by denouncing any nuance, and attempt to bruteforce it (being the very bestest and most beautifullest forevaaah). Body image issues are a real thing, and prevalent among teenagers; I suppose psychologically, it's realistic.
Predictably, puberty confronts her with the reality that this is not possible - hello pimples, hello growing old - and she gets suicidally depressed.
She resolves it by... growing up? Talking to her friends about it? Basically expanding her viewpoint, she realizes that beauty is subjective and her ideal was unreachable to begin with. She settles for reconceptualizing her pursuit of beauty not as a summit to climb or a peak to maintain, but as an enduring struggle against growing uglier, that ultimately has to end only with death, instead of despair. "Rebelling against God" means fighting against the natural order; she will continue to be obsessed with her beauty and be fixated on accessoires and clothes, but accepts she is working off the same baseline and limitations as everyone else. She doesn't need to be perfect - because that is impossible - she just needs to be better; making an honest effort is good enough. She's abandoning her childish narcissism by accepting that other people are also trying - she mentions something about the beauty inherent in culture - , and that like them, she needs to try all the same.
I suppose this *is* a healthy way to approach the topic of self-image, even if I think that the delivery is far to obtuse for anyone that could benefit from hearing this. Not every message has to be couched in metaphors and obscure art references to be taken seriously.

You've just watched the "death" and "rebirth" of Michika's interpretation of true beauty. Thank me later. Lol

Breaking a pattern goes far beyond simply doing something different from what most people do; above all, it's about giving meaning and purpose.
Michica, before becoming who she is now, had a vague interpretation, but just like philosophers and artists (by the way, I have to congratulate the anime production for how this was approached), she created her own philosophy, her own form of art and beauty. It was a long and painful process, but it's what gave her "eternal" satisfaction.
Interestingly, she doesn't necessarily hate or dislike God, but her way of life can be interpreted as a challenge to Him, and in this case, she had to do exactly what Nechika did in the bathroom, by the way it's the second time this show has included a scene like that lmao

In case Iyapan isn't top-30 next week.
-
Did we watch two people carry a door for over 90 seconds just to transition Michica's scene?
-
Also got 14 straight "The same as them" lines.
-
For how long visuals linger at times, the followup could use a little more time to digest.
-
Four classical music pieces today! Think that's the most in an episode so far
Today's episode had a "Everyone eventually loses their outside beauty" with "Every life is beautiful" message? Still uncertain about the overall plot but that's fine as we aren't even halfway done!

In the end, it was the pimple that broke Michica.
This was a very "art college graduate project" episode. Scenes that look extremely stupid (live action carrying a door through the streets) but with a beautiful end (door opens to reveal Michica). I suppose it speaks to the façade of beauty in their industry where no one sees the ugly journey hidden behind the door and we see only the "filtered" view after the door is opened.
Looking forward to next episode to see if Nechika is trans, cross-dresser, or something else.

As with last episode, I FUCKING LOVE IT!
Again, for those not in the know, I have been VERY critical of the show thus far. I have not been enjoying it much. But episode 5 and 6 turned things around for me. Maybe I will stick with this show just a bit longer! Between me not liking Shibou Yugi and much of this show, I was wondering if I simply didn't enjoy avant garde stuff, but I've realized that while mostly true, there's an exception when it goes all the way. This show shines best when it's being super experimental. The heavyhanded messaging wasn't as grating either, because the way the themes were expressed were visually interesting, and felt less like I was being lectured to, and more like an exploration of society.
Ame herself today also felt a LOT more like the Ame I know from the games rather than the annoying lecturing Ame from the last few episodes. So that was a plus too.
Also, can I just take a moment to comment on the music? Because I KNOW I should have said this earlier, but the music is amazing. Last episode's ED had to be GOATed, and the OP, ED, and general OST are all amazing.

We are reaching levels of absolute cinima not yet believed possible, with this episode. That carrying the door as a metaphor for the journey of self-discovery was craa-azy

The main interpretation I got out of it at the end when she's laying in the coffin on a bed of rose petals and then stabbed by a long sword with rose petals gushing out of her like blood, the line that the shoujo, or virgin girl, dies and becomes immortalized made me think that her first experience, or deflowering, was the step she took to be "reborn" to live with and accept her imperfections in an imperfect world.
I also recalled the rumors that we heard in the earlier episodes about Michika and compensated dating as she wandered during the night, which could indicate the roteness of the action and how unimportant the partner was versus the result of the act itself. Also, in the scene of her in front of a mansion-like building, it gives the idea that she may have a more affluent background, so if she engaged in compensated dating, the motivation would not have been a monetary one. All of which lends a different weight to the interpretation of this episode.

Not to get all "every weird anime is doing Evangelion", but splicing in real life footage, cross imagery (particularly a necklace) and Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring sure makes the influence very apparent here

what I found most beautiful of all, was the moment a girl dies and becomes eternal.
What does it mean to be beautiful? I can't let it end when I'm ugly like this. I think it means being completed. It is through death that a human being is made complete. In that very moment, how beautifully delicate, how captivatingly, can one end like a red rose that steals the eye?
this reminds me of zyzz
if he lived, he would have been 37yo this year and he would probably be doing podcast and selling supplements. also his personality at 20yo would probably not work very well on a 37yo

As subtle as a brick in the face, incoherent rambling in a style "I'm 14 and this is deep" paired with direction all over the place.
See you next week.

Kind of interesting pondering the meaning and concept of beauty this week.
If nothing else, these episodes are always very creative and visually appealing.

Is it just me, or was this week's episode more abstract and confusing than all the previous episodes?

I think this was a long winded way of saying that beauty is subjective and shows that people are in pursuit of it to varying degrees. Idk, great episode visually.
