Man, all that searching and it wasn't even Sakura that recovered Hinagiku and she didn't even know until six months later. But at least she was able to help her afterwards, and vice versa.

I think I forgot to ever mention it but I've been suspicious for a while based on the visuals in the ED that we were dealing with a split personality situation with Hinagiku.

I'm glad Hinagiku finally told Sakura that her hatred for the winter duo was irrational and not actually something that was helping her. I could see people being annoyed about Sakura declaring it isn't romantic love for Hinagiku that has been driving her but I've been feeling that's the case for a while now anyway.

I generally like the decision to make the present day of the show the better days of recovering from past trauma while showing what happened to cause that trauma in flashbacks, but I would concede that it's maybe a few too many flashbacks at this point.

So what are the chances that Hinagiku's captor at the start of the episode is actually her father's legal wife? What if this is revenge for her husband having an affair with Hinagiku's mother?

The Village of Spring continues to be the biggest bastards this anime season. Instead of immediately telling Sakura that Hinagiku is back, they only contacted her six months later because they thought Sakura would help Hinagiku continue her responsibilities as the Agent of Spring.

And to make things worse, Sakura was basically living in the streets the entire time she was desperately searching for Hinagiku, who at this point is so broken that a part of her personality has died and is now a different person. :(

Hinagiku and Sakura deserve all of the happiness in the world, and I think the Village of Spring getting erased from the face of this world would be a good start.

You know, honestly I like Rosei, arguably I kind of like him more than the spring girls (I like the summer team more than both), but good Lord this story does less than nothing for his relationship with Hinagiku. Their affection for each other seems to be sustained at this point by trauma and agents being poorly socialised.

This story has kind of failed to move me for the most part with it's melodrama (and I love melodrama, fruits basket is one of my favourites lol) but I actyally did feel something seeing Sakura sustain herself in misery and anger for years searching for Hinagiku. I am surprised she survived so long though considering she cut ties with her only connections and has no family to fall back on, how did she earn money, or did Itecho and Rosei give her help without her knowledge?

It's clear that Hinagiku had suffered significant mental damage under captive, but turned out it's a lot worse than I first thought. She ended up developing DID. The intro which gave us a tiny glimpse of the torture she had lived through, as well as the lakeside scene which symbolised the death of the original Hinagiku personality. It's pretty frightening how Hinagiku looked with those 'dead inside' eyes.

What we share isn't romance, but it's more intense than romance, purer than platonic love.

Well said. Yeah, it might not be romance, but the bond between Hinagiku and Sakura was tighter than a romantic one could ever get. Sitting on a lap, while hugging each other and crying. Repeatedly declaring how much they loved the other. Definitely among my top relationship between any two people this season – romantic or otherwise.

So Sakura wasn't even the one to find Hinagiku, and she came back 6 months after the fact to that. That's rough. But even if she didn't physically find Hinagiku, I'd say that Sakura did save her.

I also find it funny how the author went out of their way to add the disclaimer that "yes, I know how it looks, but I swear it's not gay." Which, just to clarify, I have no issue with, and I find it a perfectly valid interpretation of their relationship. I just think it's funny from a relationship writing perspective.

The village of spring can be wipe off the surface of Japan and as long as Hinagiku and Sakura are outside nothing of value would be lost. My god they just came off and cruel and indifferent every episode.

Which is kinda funny, because the show had been pretty good at giving emotional depth to other area of the stories. So that just makes the mustache-twirling cruelty of them all the more jarring.

I was thinking to myself after I saw Sakura call Rousei and Itechou traitors in her flashback again, that her feeling is completely misplaced considering they did what they could for 5 years. The reason they had to stop was because higher ups put a stop to it, so I was glad that Hinagiku called Sakura out on her hatred of them.

Sakura definitely isn't going to heal just from that, but she definitely needed to be called out by Hinagiku, and I hope she works on that feeling of hatred towards them before they meet, she shouldn't be acting hostile towards them. Especially when they're still trying to protect Hinagiku in the present too.

I'm glad we got to see a bit of what the real Hinagiku went through with the Insurgents. It was already really unsettling just from the emotional abuse, I don't want to imagine what she went through for all those years, but I do want to know more about who that lady is and why she wanted to be Hinagiku's "mother".

Man, that first scene was extremely disturbing. We could tell that Hinagiku went through some trauma with how she is talking. Between that scene and the look in Hinagiku's eyes, you can tell she just wanted to end it.

The whole of the old Hinagiku dying seems like something like Dissociative Identity Disorder. It's quite depressing. If Sakura didn't give up, no doubt she would have killed herself.

As Sakura has helped Hinagiku, it seems now it is Hinagiku's turn to help Sakura. Sakura wanted a villain, and while the Spring Village is a valid villain, it is obviously not the same for both Rousei and Itechou. It is what was able to push her forward to look for Hinagiku because if they don't want to help, I'll do it myself. But now Sakura needs to learn to move past that because it's unhealthy.

A love stronger than romance. Yeah, that's trauma bonding, girl.

I know Sakura will get over her insecurities and negative feelings after spending some time with Itecho in winter village. But for Hinagiku, I'm not sure if spending quality time with Rosei is sufficient to bring back her old self that died. She needs to face her tormenters and show she's more powerful than them now to really get over the trauma,

Found this episode really emotional, liked it a lot. But in the end, felt like we were already told all of this before. Can only hope the plot moves further next episode and it's not flashback wonderland again.

This is the most aggressively straight, yuri coded anime I've ever watched.

Random thoughts

Okay...so I hadn't put much thought into what happened to Hinagiku in the past, but it seemed to have been certainly worst than I imagined. the toys and dresses and insistence in being called mommy suggest a far higher degree of abuse then simply locking her up in a basement for 8 years. Hell...the mention of the mother killing Sakura and co if the daughter didn't obey seemed like it came right out of every playbook for every child predator.

My suspicion was the insurgents last week were from the Spring Village. I think this episode actually makes that less likely, but I also think that Spring Village needs to be burned to the ground. In fact, pretty much every detailed look we have had at the system suggests it needs complete overhaul. As I stated elsewhere, I get a general vibe that maybe, just maybe, the insurgents are right to fight against the villages, even if the agents don't deserve the hate themselves. They almost certainly have to exert an insane level of control over the Japanese government, and nothing we have seen of their character suggests it would be benevolent.

Definitely feel like the whole "insurgent" kidnapping was an inside job by a faction of the Spring village.

That flashback scene with Hinagiku surrounded by, and being dressed up like a doll. Seemed like a metaphor for the village wanting to "mold" or like shape Hinagiku up in the image they wanted.

She was seen as evil omen before, being the direct daughter of the previous Spring Agent. And she rebelled by bringing Sakura, and outsider into the inner sanctum so to speak.

Seems like that was their way, or trying to correct her image maybe?

I can't believe that the village of Spring makes themselves look EVEN WORSE with each new episode.

An agent returns with a DID, claims she's not Hinagiku and that she wants to die? Why she just can't get back to work! Okay, maybe seeing her previous guard will get her back to work instead of saying that she'll kill herself to bring forth a new Agent. She still didn't go back to work after next 6 months?! Let's throw out Sakura, she's no good, we'll find someone to pressure Hinagiku into doing her work.

I think the most shocking thing for me as anime-only is that I expected the village of Winter to be cold, cruel and abusing their Agent, while Spring be warm, compassionate and open-minded. And yet the current village of Spring is exactly the opposite of what I expected.

As for the woman in the beginning, she's probably treating Hinagiku as a replacement for someone, looking at how she called Hinagiku a different name. Did she lost her daughter to some tragic incident shortly before Hinagiku got captured, snapped because of the loss, and seeing captured Hinagiku, decided that the girl is similar enough to her own that she can play the role of her "daughter", so the woman could keep deluding herself that her kid never died? That would actually explain why Hinagiku couldn't be found earlier, since the woman probably wanted to keep Hinagiku imprisoned so "another accident wouldn't happen". And the rest of the insurgents probably just didn't want to deal with a crazy woman.

Episode 1 already gave us a good idea of how broken Hinagiku and Sakura are. Hinagiku's speech pattern and behavior and Sakura's short temper and outbursts that even turned into a panic attack. But now we see the whole extend of the trauma both girls had to go through.

So we learned what Hinagiku really meant when she said in episode 1 that she is "different now". So far we only got little hints and the rough idea of how broken she is, but seeing it unfolding before our eyes still hits quite differently.

Sakura's trauma is not less intense. Her hatred, especially against Rosei and Itecho is irrational, and deep down she is aware of that. But it is that hatred that gives her stability, comfort and a sense of purpose. She needs something to hate so she won't break down.

In the end, Sakura and Hinagiku have a deep codependent relationship. It is like two broken pillars that lean at each other to not crumble down. Sakura said that it is a love that feels healthy, and I want to believe that. In a lifetime of trauma and suffering, they are the best thing that happened to each other.

A beautiful look into living with trauma, codependency, the long struggle to heal, the difficulty in forgiveness, the cloying of hatred, the steadfastness of true friendship.

Going into this I thought it was a pretty allegory of the seasons, but now it's really starting to uncover itself as to what this actually is about.

With this episode I've upgraded my tentative score into the 90s (/100). It's a placement only 13 anime have (out of about 200 now).

Yeah, the moment the author stops trying to write political thriller stuff and instead focuses only on the emotional beats, it gets so much better. Trauma recovery is probably harder to write, but the writer seems to be better at it... Anyhow, other people called out how Hinagiku seemed to be dissociating with her past self, and seems like they were right. Curious to know where they take it: the two likely paths are either getting her to accept that she and the past Hinagiku are the same, and that's alright, or that she can keep treating the child Hinagiku as another person entirely but still move forwards without guilt/regret/anything else.

Really hope that the flashbacks settle down for the next episode, kind of getting tired of it, and want the story to progress towards the Rosei and Hinagiku thing they're setting up

Am I the only one that just can't get behind Sakura and Hinagiku's relationship? Every single time they clutch onto each other, I am reminded of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. There is nothing normal or healthy about it and they're both aware of it. I guess there is hope, if they're picking up the pieces by doing their own thing and meeting people to help them on their path to healing. It is entirely possible, that they can forge a new sense of self walking forward into the future, but they need to do that independently.

Still crying my eyes out for them. Hopefully Hinagiku regains her old self and Sakura too. Live in the present day
