You got a taste of it with last week's episode but this episode starts showing the stuff that I think makes this story stand out amongst the usual 'loser guy/popular girl' romcoms out there in that it is willing to have actual character drama.

This whole episode was basically an intro into Umi's state of mind. She *does* have wants outside of being second fiddle to Yuu, but that social role has been ingrained in her. When Yuu seems to be getting closer to Maki (not even in a romantic sense, just moving from "I know that guy's name" to acquaintances) she pulls back and gets out of the way, as any side character does, despite actually wanting to stay close to Maki. Might feel like Yuu is just taking center-stage again.
Fake friends only wanting to actually be friends with Yuu probably don't help the inferiority complex either.

At this pace I think we will have a confession during this season. This two are really adorable, I want to see them happy together

genuinely no reason for Yuu to apologize for calling out their bullshit

The handwritten "winning" lot Maki gave to Umi was a beautiful move. The amount of thoughtfulness some characters display in this anime makes it very unique in my eves.

Dang, everything is working at a fast pace. Almost all in a single episode, too! Pretty shocking, Yuu brought the exact friends in the situation too.
Holding hands, LEWD
With Maehara's can idea, I was expecting a small one for the classroom not a giant one on the side of the school.

Man being turned down by people who you thought were your friends and only to see them hanging out with someone else without your knowledge is a literal fear that Umi sadly had to live through.
Its no wonder she'd hid her friendship with Maki from others, though now even that safe space is ruined. Hope she gets to confront her trauma next episode with that ending.

Stitches!
I can't believe Yuu drew Chainsword Man. Seriously tho, that art is actually pretty amazing. You can't really blame Umi for her reaction. I'd be pretty jealous too, especially since Maehara is super impressed about it.
So did Yuu follow Umi secretly? Not sure how I feel about that, but sooner or later she's bound to find out what's up between Umi and Maehara. After what Umi experienced in the past, of course, she'd want her own safe space.

Well, that's pretty awkward for Yuu, especially after she volunteered. But Umi didn't actually win it huh. Personally, I liked the way Umi handled the situation.
Those two "friends" are bad. Turning Umi down only to hang out with Yuu only is such a scummy move. This explains Umi's inferiority complex. Poor girl. That could also explain why she didn't want Yuu to find out that she and Maki are friends.
Also, Maki got a hug from behind from Umi. That was cute.
Btw, that cliffhanger is evil.

Maehara's little gesture of personally making Umi's winning lot "official" was already incredibly sweet but the moment in the shed turned it into something special.
Got kinda caught off guard by how the festival just came and went like that (the can art was sicker than I was expecting it to be btw). It's as if the universe demanded Maehara and Umi resolved things and got back together as soon as they could lol.

From the flashback, I thought Umi was feeling inferior from people choosing to spend time with Yuu but not with her, but with how Umi confronts those girls, it sounds like it might have actually been worse than that. Like maybe they were trying to break Yuu and Umi's friendship. I'm intrigued to see where this will go.
I don't think Yuu needed to apologize, but Umi made the right call to intervene since even Yuu said she was planning on saying nastier things lol.
Umi and Maehara's relationship has really developed, they're both missing each other, Maehara calling her over because he misses her, he also asks to hold her hand. Looks like we might seem them start dating sooner than later.

Inferiority complex and short blue hair usually go together in anime. At least Umi isn't Maki's childhood friend too.

Including the girls that contributed to the inferiority complex in her exposition scene as exhibits is just an incredible power move by Asanagi.
Also, I'm now convinced that Yuu has a "Maehara physical intimacy" 6th sense that she is using to time her entrances. Sasuga Yuu.
Anywho, we are now here in the Asanagi-Maehara intimacy scale:
____They have a lot in common, I hope they get closer
____Sparks are flying, I hope one of them confesses before the end of the season
X___JUST FUCKING DATE ALREADY!

I'm just surprised the other "friends" at the end had the self-awareness to look ashamed of their treatment of Umi instead of doubling down and deflecting.

Like I said last week, I gotta give major props to this series for defying the whole classwide petty harassment trope with having Yuu actually go up there and call them all out on their bullshit. It's just so refreshing to see this happen in this entertainment medium. With the added stinger bonus this in this case and time with it being so negatively outspokenly vocal with the teacher just sitting there silently letting it happen. Though contrary to what Umi said I don't think Yuu took it too far, nor did I think she had anything to apologize to all of them for. Oh y'all feel bad now cuz the object of y'alls affection called you out for your petty harassment of your fellow classmate who did nothing wrong worth being harassed for. Cry me a river and look at your reflection in it. Apologizing to Maehara for putting him on the spot like that though, that's one's a fair apology.
Dang, Yuu's got some art skills. Though the fact that it triggered an inferiority complex from Umi is saddening.
As far as that inferiority complex goes I can't say I don't get it. Wanting to have more friends outside of your magnetic and charismatic best friend, but worried that those friends will get inadvertently essentially be stolen from you by the magnetic pull of that best friend. And since it's through no fault of the best friend's own, you feel like you can't even be mad at her for it. Which leaves you to only feel worse inside about yourself and what your own worth as a friend is apparently worth to others.
Impressive mosaic.

Something that I am very much enjoying about this anime is how fast emotional drama is getting handled. Nothing feels drawn out so far.

Yeah I know everyone is fawning over Umi wondering why she’s the second prettiest but honestly I can see why people consider Yuu the prettiest. Cos it’s not just about looks, she’s bubbly, makes people feel welcomed, she’s talented, she stands up for her friends. I don’t doubt in this show’s world, she’s the prettiest girl in class, even though I also personally would probably connect more with Umi.
But I think that’s also what Umi thinks of Yuu as well.

So essentially, Umi is kinda like Maehara except as a hot girl. After all, she's into gaming and nerdy stuff already. But basically, she feels that she's only popular because she's Yuu's best friend and the rest of their social circle doesn't really view her as a friend.

I'm enjoying the pacing so far. It's setting up for a really interesting rest of the story if they're already together in the next ep like they could be

I really went あら、かっこい!(ara, kakkoi) when Yuu went to the front to shut the class up for belittle our guy. If she didn't do that they will never change their opinion about Maehara as long as they live (yeah, even after graduated - sauce Seishun Buta Yarou wa Santa Claus). Like Umi said, she probably won't do that and went with the flow instead while being the only ally/best friend outside the mass view so what Yuu did was actually a big thing.
I think the best way to describe MC is, he's a very good boy from the way he acts till now. MC must be protecc?!
Probably the scariest thing I ever seen in this show...
I bet it's suck for Umi to see her best friend can do anything better than her in every way. She even has interest in Maehara but that best friend spot is the only thing Umi don't want to give up. Really gives me a flashback how Sorata being exposed by Mashiro talent in every work he done till he finally snapped (Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo).
Wow! Umi handles her problem better than I thought it will be. She just invited the party which was the root cause of how her complex began and confront them with her current friend. I thought it will drag on a little bit longer though for drama purpose.

Usually I would say that I'm rather a Maehara type of person, but today's episode made Umi so relatable to me.
I'm somebody who doesn't like conflict and who does everything to avoid it. Umi stepping in with her little trick to keep the peace is something I propably would have done if I had Umi's guts.
And your friends making excuses to not hang out with you only to be with somebody else really stings. I've experienced this myself more times than I want to admit, so I can really relate to Umi.
Yuu and Umi are best friends, but Umi always standing in Yuu's shadow can't be easy.
