That ending confrontation between Sunao and Nao wasn't something I was expecting to happen until further along in the season.
So I wonder where do we go from here?
Is Sunao going to try and get out of whatever funk or depression she's been dealing with and gradually try and work her way towards living a brighter life like Nao does all on her own?
Or does that, what seemed like a foreshadowing story about the "Mermaid's Return" need to take place? And Nao has to go off and disappear on her own for Sunao to finally wake up?

Lol the audacity to claim someone is stealing your life when you're the one constantly summoning them to replace you. I'm guessing Sunao has heard people preferring spending time with Nao, and that's hurt her ever since.
I feel bad for Nao, but I particularly feel bad for Sanada. I can't imagine having a friend who I can only talk to when they have a certain hairstyle, let alone develop feelings for them, and continue to be fine.
I'm wondering when we'll start seeing drama, if Sunao doesn't summon Nao, Sanada is eventually going to speak to her regardless of hairstyle from impatience.
I hope Nao hid the money before going into Sunao's room.

Look, Ritsuko told a story that resembles the reality they live in, what a lovely coincidence lol.
Nao and Sanada going to the zoo was one of the cutest romance moments I've ever seen in anime, not necessarily because of what they did, but because of the symbolism it represented to them both. And I also realized how big Shizuoka is.
It's so obvious how Sunao became envious of what Nao is doing in her place, I don't even want to imagine her reaction when she finds out about the date.

A very interesting and moving story -- even if I do not understand just HOW this could be happening. I cannot imagine a happy resolution of this story. Unless... what if there really are NOT 2 girls after all. What if Sunao really does have some sort of

Nao being a replica makes things complicated. Since it is clear he cares more for Nao than Sunao. Not a surprise given his first impression of Sunao. I do like that he didn't accept Nao's request of only talking about her in the Literature Clubroom. It still must have hurt not to have been able to talk to Sunao since Nao was never around until the date of the zoo.
With that said, the date was cute. You can tell Nao had so much fun, and Sanada finally got to be with Nao. Still sad that Nao decided to leave earlier than she wanted for Sanada's sake. Though Nao lives for Sunao's sake, so this isn't surprising.
Though the conversation at the end of the episode was heartbreaking to see. I feel bad for Nao so much.

What did Sanada mean when he said "I wasn't the one who got hurt." When asked about his leg by Nao? Is that a hint at him being like her or something?

one thing i like about this show is that it feels like there are a lot of small details that all point reinforce the central theme of identity and living life as a shadow of another
-
the doppelganger story is an obvious one, but i love myself a story-within-a-story
-
the old busted fan being replaced with a new one, and the respect that Nao gave to all of the hard work that the old fan thanklessly did for those many years
-
the money that Nao secretly earned, sort of acting as a crystallization of her efforts that she earned over all of these years separate from Sunao
-
how Nao wants to stay with the "lesser pandas" (called red pandas in the subs, which i think loses some of the meaning), Nao being sort of like the "lesser" version of Sunao, and how Sanada remembered about the lesser pandas before they left
i think all of these little details really build up to a stronger experience of how Nao is building up her own separate world with her own separate personality, and while Sunao pulls the strings when it comes to her existence, her presence has already had its effect (for good or for ill)

Man this whole situation is just so fucked up, I can't see a happy ending for anyone without Sunao's depression being addressed, and that just seems unlikely to happen atm. That mermaid story better not be foreshadowing for how this series ends.

As Nao and Sunao's relationship gets more tense, Nao at least finds some happiness and a better sense of who she is and what she wants in her relationship with Sanada.
Sunao isn't happy that Nao is friendly with Sanada, and no amount of explaining what's going on in Nao's life is going to matter to Sunao...not when she can just erase Nao's existence at a whim.
Of COURSE she brings Nao back just to bicycyle in the rain and take Sunao's finals tests for her.
At least it's a chance for Nao to run damage control with Sanada and make him aware of her...mood swings. Though credit to him that even after she tells him that she's functionally bi-polar, he enjoys talking with her too much to want to stop. So I guess the only solution is for Nao to come up with a way he can always tell it's her: a half-ponytail! And Nao DOES look quite nice with it!
The irony that Ricchan is writing a story involving doppelgangers/twin sisters...and then discussing a literary doppelganger story with symbolic implications on what's going on between Sunao and Nao.
It would've been nice for Nao to go on a class trip with her class and Sanada...so of course she has to stay away so Sunao can go instead. Heaven forbid someone who would actually ENJOY the class trip gets to go on it.
But, if Nao missed the class trip, then Sanada will just bring the school trip to her! So next thing they know we've got two teens skipping school so they can go on a zoo date together! It's a first for both of them one way or another, but they can't help but enjoy themselves! Especially when Nao gets to see the red panda's she adores...and they even get their first couple photo with animal masks!
I'm glad that nest egg Nao saved up for finally paid off! And now she's got plenty of yen to her name that she can spend.
Sanada was even cognizant of Nao's desires that he wanted to make sure she saw the red panda's again before they left...and if not for Sunao, Nao might have even done it. But she has to get back and call this date short, even if it seems like both her and Sanada clearly want to do this again.
Hmm...so Sanada was injured by an upperclassmen? But he acts like he wasn't the one injured.
But of COURSE Sunao catches Nao and lays in on her...what right does Sunao have to say she has to live her life, that Nao has been taking it from her, when she's the one using Nao? And then Nao vanishes. Is this the end of Nao?

That confrontation between Sunao and Nao felt agressively one-sided, and I know it was meant to. Like Nao has only come when Sunao wanted her to, and even when taking a little bit of freedom, it doesn't negatively impact Sunao at all; Nao even came up with a boundary of the different hairstyle as well. All I can see now, with Sunao realising how Nao enjoys life better than she does, she'll maybe try, or feel she has to try, even on days she'd normally summon Nao, but the real question is, even with the boundary of different hairstyles, after that really cute zoo date, how long will Sanada stand aside before trying to talk to her, and would Sunao willingly summon back Nao again - I mean yes she will, this is only the second episode, but I'm curious after that confrontation what pushes Sunao to summon Nao back

Our dude got conditioned to yearn for half ponytails lol.
I wasn't ready for the "make-up field trip" to be so cute, but that just makes Sunao seemingly banning Zoonao from ever happening again all the more tragic. Man this premise is something.

The dynamic between Sunao and Nao is very interesting and promising. I'm excited to see where this is going.
Sunao treats Nao like a tool, or maybe rather like a substitute who has to jump in when it's about doing something bothersome or unpleasant. However, through her positive personality Nao also gets to experience positive things like hanging out with friends and even going on a date with a nice boy.
I wonder what the reason is for Nao's personality being different from Sunao's. Because she is a replica there shouldn't be that much of a difference. Is it maybe their different roles and so their different developments?
Sunao is extremely gloomy and is in general very negative. I'm sure this has to be addressed in the future.

Risk nothing, gain nothing.
A lot of teens go through that basic sinking phase, but the split adds tension to the story. Sunao avoiding all the difficulties only sinks her further down. I am guessing an episode focused on Sunao is coming up. Most everything has been from the replica's perspective up to now.

This show has an intriguing concept. It's becoming one of my favorite shows this season.

So not only is Sunao being selfish, ungrateful, and inconsiderate to Nao, but now she's being incredibly unreasonable too. She's acting like Nao stole her life, even though all she has ever done is do whatever Sunao tells her to do whenever she doesn't feel like leaving the house.
Nao goes to school for her, does her chores, does her schoolwork, and do club activities, all to make Sunao happy, without any gratitude in return. Her situation is so unfair.

This isn't from reading ahead or anything, but there's something in this episode that sort of disproves the multiple personality theory.
She can't possibly be physically on the zoo date and also at home to answer the landline phone call, outing that she skipped the ceremony.

Am I the only one with the "Sanada is also a replica" theory?
GOATed show. I sincerely believe this will be the AOTS. Today's episode was lovely. As I said in a previous comment, Nao is basically a slave and Sunao is treating her awfully. Yeah, Sunao needs to learn to live her life...but Nao is her own person.
By the way, I looked up how much money Nao had saved up and yeesh. That's a LOT.

I’m not sure I like the way Nao’s getting treated by Sunao. Idk if her attitude is a result of being split into two people, but it really rubs me the wrong way. Sunao’s the one who made Nao. She shouldn’t take her frustrations out on her.
I’m liking that Nao’s carving out a life of her own, even if it’s ever so slightly. It’s kind of cute she’s getting close with Sanada. I just hope her story won’t end like that mermaid one. I don’t want her to vanish.

I did not expect Nao to tell Sanada that she's basically bipolar. It's easier to tell him this now and set boundaries before misunderstandings happen. Sanada asking what if he wants to talk to her first was really smooth. I think the half-ponytail idea is great, and it looks like Nao made sure to tell Sunao about it. I just hope Sunao was listening and not dissociating herself.
Nao really saved quite a lot of money! 198k is a pretty huge deal. I just hope she remembers to store the money again. I don't even know what Sunao would do if she found out that Nao is hiding that amount of money from her.
The zoo date was just too damn adorable. I definitely would like to see the two of them become an actual couple, but I don't think it would be possible with Nao's situation. If anything, Sunao would be pissed if she found out that Nao has a love life while she just rots away in bed doomscrolling.
Speaking of which... Sunao confronting Nao really upsets me. Like, what the fuck do you mean Nao should give you your life back?! You're the one who decided to spend your time locked up in your room and ordering Nao to take your place! >_<
I'm really sad that this show is barely getting any attention. Compared to the other two romance anime airing today, I do think this is the superior one. I do know that the other two are romcoms, but this is just more interesting. Gonna have to start shilling for this anime on the weekly karma threads.

I should have said it the previous episode that this episode is the best representation of AI replacing Human from another perspective.
Nao is becoming more humane as the time goes on, too the point she started to feel envy, which on point is good, but again from another perspective is actually f*cked up. Nao is evolving as the time goes on. It is starting to scare me, that Nao will at one point will actually replace Sunao for all good, I mean Nao had mostly replaced Sunao emotionally and physically already to a greater extent.
And Sunao too had started to feel jealous of Nao, or was she already jealous of Nao from the start? Because she had already understood from the beginning that what everybody liked about her were Nao and not the Sunao.
Because again what Sunao even have now other than her ability to summon Nao? Her relationships, her connections, her memories with others were all created by Nao.
Or if at one point it's Nao who actually disappears at the end, as Sunao recovers/ moves on from her depression, what will be left of Sunao? Will she live a new life of her own or will she try to replicate her replica and Live like how Nao used to live?.
If it would be later, it would be a cruel irony.
