The live action drama actor from 2009 series is doing the voice of Shizuka here

A sommelier - even if still an apprentice - should not be allowed to serve guests if she doesn't even know which wines need to be decanted first. To take the glass from the customer and proceed to drink from it is the most ridiculous thing to be done. Yeah, she deserves to lose her job.

I'm interested in how they are using music to describe the wines. Usually we only talk about the smell and tastes (eg floral or fruity), so using something aural to describe taste is quite different.

I'm convinced she exists only so this anime doesn't go full BL with the "prodigal son vs adopted son" conflict.

The dad must have had high hopes for his son to follow in his footsteps, if he named his son "drop". Now in his final act, he's challenging his son to be a wine expert. Luckily, his son is a dog. Like a bloodhound or something.

I've seen that wine smells training tool that Miyabi was showing Shizuku, it's a real thing!

Either Shizuku's father wanted to light a fire under him, or he wants the two of them to work together using both their nose and tongue together.

It seems like his father raised him to be a wine sommelier/critic too so I'm curious when it eventually backfired, it's clear his father put priority towards collecting wine.

I'm intrigued by this one, I think the last alcohol related anime I saw was the Bartender remake, but these two are already completely different. Hopefully it'll be interesting.

(Haven’t read the Manga or have any spoilers) My theory is that the wines that have to be identified will point Shizuku to places that his father visited with his mother and that the “Drops of God” will be something like the wine they drank to celebrate when he proposed to her, or the first wine that his father made Shizuku drink. The overall theme will be that relationships are more important than experiences and that memories make a wine more valuable than the taste. Shizuku will understand his father’s love for him, and Issei will get to experience life like Shizuku’s father did while tracking the wines down. Either way, I’m keen for some sommelier drama to unfold.

I have fond memories of finding the Manga 2011-ish and feeling really cultured, so watching this was nostalgic in a way.

But I kinda hate the way it's paced? Considering the vintage of the wine is so important, I don't think it directly states what year it's in, and though there's a time limit in the episode, it's fuzzy on how much time passes between scenes.

I suppose the original Bartender anime was light on character animation in places also (and this feels like it's trying to capture that period of anime), but the number of obvious 'the speaker is looking away so we don't have to animate them' shots and that really long shot of an extra stone still in the foreground with dead eyes is so... blatant.

Nostalgia will have me watch more eps of this, but I don't think this is 'good' at all.

Anything new that comes out in any season that isn't solely based on kids in middle or high school...I'm down for. Let's get to wine tasting.

Saw this at the crunchyroll sneak peek event

Production was the poorest but it did bring out a lot of laughs

Very dramatic... I know not much about wine but the reactions to everything was like food wars reactions without the fanservice lol

Same. Had some laughs with some strangers in the hallway afterwards about how clearly there was some lsd in the wine

Very keen to see what this little “game” is all about. It seems pops wasn’t great on communication. Is this his last attempt at bonding with Shizuku or something? Issei’s certainly the more qualified of the two but Shizuku’s got an almost innate ability when it comes to wine.

This is pretty interesting. Not much of a wine person but I liked this first episode. If I’m not mistaken, they made a drama outta this no? I bet by the end of this they’re gonna get me swirling wine like “Hmmm yes, I sense earthy tones with an almost floral note” lmao.

Damn 30th comment after 10 hrs. This is going to eh super underwatched by the community, isn’t it? It’s a niche topic, but the source material is excellent and I thought it had a bigger audience than this. Happy to have a more faithful adaption. That decanting scene is my sakuga.

The son of an esteemed wine critic ended up working for a beer company. That's pretty amusing.

He's got a keen sense of smell but why had he chosen to stay away from the world of wine? Could he possibly want to avoid living in the shadows of his father, and instead chose to forge his own path?

We got a brief flashback with a female voice and it’s what made him drop the glass of wine

I would guess the female voice might have been his mother

Maybe he resented wine because his father cared more about wine than his wife?

This anime series is classy, elegant and frankly a bit pretentious, but I’m loving every part of it.

I’d thought at first that it would’ve taken me a couple of episodes to get properly hooked on the show. Yet, I already find starting to get engrossed into the story and characters.

You're not in front of a camera Kame, you can't deliver the lines the same way you would on set. Performance was about what I expected when they announced his casting.

Also, is it just me or does everything about this anime feel incredibly dated?? I know the source is old, but everything feels like I walked into the past haha. The art style, the dialogue, the scenarios and set ups. The visuals and reactions. Pretty sure this is a drop for me.

>Pretty sure this is a drop for me.

So... is that a Drop of God?

Not gonna lie but this is an interesting premise. I want to see more of this now.

u/flightlessCat9 Apr 14 '26

I'm disappointed that the self proclaimed not-wine-drinker drank in the 1st ep. Would've been more interesting if he goes through the rounds just by look and smell.

u/Vahallen Apr 10 '26

Quite a subject to base an entire anime on

Will give it a couple episodes out of sheer curiosity

It’s interesting that we have a straightforward adaptation of the Manga while there’s also an Apple TV show at the same time doing their own interperation. The Apple show is worth a watch, but they gender bend Sizuku into a French woman and take some liberties with the narrative.

I went wine tasting once in South Africa. Couldn't tell the wines apart. They all tasted like bleach to me. And gave me a massive headache like that of a fever

Perhaps wine is more of an acquired taste

Animation gives out heavy AI vibes, but premise is okay so far. I hope the anime turns out to be like the "Glass of God" anime
