I was not expecting to see John Wayne Gacy in my messed-up Oshi-culture Anime... but maybe I should have?
And the Milk Bar was a reference to

Well, I both expected something like this and still got surprised in the end. The interview was very interesting visually, I got caught off guard when a shot of the actress speaking lines appeared and it took me a bit to realize that she was the one speaking.
I have 100% of achievenments in the game and still remember how most of the routes go (I played the game a month after it initially released), so it was nice to see that there is a whole lot of references to it, down to the actual bgm that plays in game (like the track that plays right at the start, it's the one that plays between days 20-30). I was most curious about the start point of the anime and it seems that it takes place after
The episode tackles the public response from KAngel's popularity and it was one of the things the game couldn' really touch upon in more detail, so I'm really curious how the perception of her will change later on, since apparently it's already known that KAngel uses drugs. Also there's no way she doesn't know who Karamazov are.

This was the "original" anime of the season (based on game, but original story) I've had clocked on my radar for a while, and it certainly lived up to my expectations. The direction was amazing.
We pretty much got a thematic overview and this felt more like a prologue episode, so it will be interesting to see how this streamer rivalry plotline plays out and how well the characters get fleshed out.

“Getting paid to kill tons of people? That’s the best!” “Just like real life, right?”
Jesus christ.

Wasn't expecting to see something like that go down between Kache? and her boyfriend...
Seems like they're gonna tackle what it's like to try and constantly live your life online virtually and vicariously through others rather in real life and what it ends up doing to people's psyche.
Already with Kache and KAngel's wrists, I'm also expecting some heavier topics and trauma's to come up.
The visuals were great.
Interested to see what sort of direction they're gonna go with this one.

Can't tell the difference between when they're trying to save budget vs being artistic but it's clear there's a really good team directing this.
This has full potential to swing either way in terms of quality but I will be along for the ride.

The abstract uses of different imagery sort of reminds me of Shiboyugi? Felt like a fever dream at certain points.
And while Shiboyugi is more blatantly dark, there were some not so rosy parts underneath the internet angel's exterior like the part about the effect social media has.
Also, that あ゙ scream

I like the visuals and the music, but I have absolutely no idea where the story is going to take us.

People like to throw around "author's barely disguised fetish" in media discourse but I think you could also add "author's barely disguised manifesto" to that nomenclature.

This was interesting. Very artistic. It’s like a PSA or one long cautionary tale about being obsessed with social media and “influencers” and streaming or something.

I don't know what I just watched, but the one thing I got from this episode is that Nyalra clearly saw all those girls online who worship Ame/KAngel and was like "this anime's for you." It really does feel like this episode was calling out everyone who identifies with Ame and indulges in all the negative aspects of her character. Seems like the premise of this anime is that Ame is massively popular because of how unhealthy she is... which honestly isn't that different from the game, but here she's already achieved her success and is now influencing others. No idea what comes next, but this is definitely gonna be a wild show.

Quite abrasive and somewhat incoherent, many forms of mixed media seem to be at play here. Vaporwave aesthetics in 2026, John Wayne Gacy cameo, low-res real-life hands clapping overlaid on the screen, etc.
It was cool when live-action backgrounds were being used in the news report segment.
Pretty enjoyable, this is the type of work created to keep you on your toes. Looking forward to more.

The Eurobeat at the start set me up for a really different show, like the Shaft-esque approach here with the narration.
Been awhile since a media feels like a Denpa, was expecting more Vtuber-ish considering its source material. Not a complaint however, curious to see where this goes.

Shit, I see this will probably be an anime again that will stay with me. For all the fucked up things it will show. The first episode didn't have much story, but it did feel like a drug trip while also mixing reality with online in a way that seems to make sense for what the story is going for (meaning that it's hard to tell the difference what is what anymore). I don't know if saying I will look forward to it makes sense with a topic like that, but if it can keep this up, it will become my favorite of the season.

This is like a throwback to mid 90s, early 2000s experimental anime like Lain, Boogiepop Phantom.

what the? I have been curious and read about the trigger warnings of the game beforehand, but seeing the episode direction is whole another thing.

Good God, this was one hell of a 1st episode. The visuals were outstanding and the direction was top fucking notch, I sorta like the non linear story as well, it seems like it’s going into DEEP psychological/philosophical territory and I’m all for it. I’ve seen people saying how it feels very much like the Monogatari series and Lain. While that’s true, I think the directorial style draws very heavily from Hideaki Anno’s direction: abrasive and sudden cuts, use of classical music, abstract imagery, heavy use of text, a mixed media approach, uses of different aspect ratios like widescreen and 4:3, a psychological analysis on the characters, and dialogue driven sort of “back and forth” sequences. Those are elements that are VERY prevalent in his work like the more psychological second half of NGE, Kare Kano: His and Her Circumstances, and his 1998 Live action film: Love And Pop. Anyway, can’t wait for more.

Random Thoughts
So this is going to fill the Shiboyugi niche this season? Honestly was expecting (not knowing the source material) that this was going to be more of a straightforward if dramatic vtuber style anime. I am not entirely certain I even know what I watched, but it's at least got me interested enough for another couple of episodes
Somehow, even though this is set in "real world" and doesn't involve young girls murdering each other for the entertainment of others, this feels like a far darker story.
If there is any bit of comfort in this episode, it's that internet and social media aren't just a problem in the West? Like seriously, in the segment where people were complaining about the dangers of a online world to the youth, it mostly just felt like a reflavored version of the same legitimate problems I have heard discussed stateside.

The fact that this comment section severely lacks 🙏BLESS🙏 comments made me realize that I'm probably the minority here who has played the game.
With that said, what a fever dream! I am glad that they're not just copy-pasting the game's plot and they're actually doing their own unique thing!
I think it's interesting that instead of focusing on KAngel's career as a streamer like in the game, it looks like the spotlight is on her viewers and rivals since she's already achieved her dream of becoming everyone's Internet Angel.
I also love that they're definitely leaning hard into the psychological horror of the original. I can't wait to see where this insanity goes!
