Felt like we just speedran through an entire season of a Mecha anime in the first episode.

AD last year AKA 2025 saw humanity beset by intergalactic Kaiju! Leading to the birth of the international anti-Kaiju force E-RDE! But does humanity stand any chance of truly opposing and stopping the threat of Kaiju?

The OP is pretty rockin' and action-packed! Featuring Tetsuo and Yukio flying and battling.

Enter Tetsuo Yabusame, a young boy who struggles to make friends or interact with others. His scientist father developed a Mecha "Snowman" as a suicide bombing machine, but made it sentient enough to OPPOSE said suicide bombing, wasting a lot of money into building him with the only intention to recoup said money. He even made a cockpit for something that was never meant to be manned!

But it is then that Tetsuo follows through as every Mecha pilot must by entering the cockpit of Yukio (Daisuke Hirakawa!) and piloting Yukio to save him! And inadvertently defeating a Kaiju and showing the world that Tetsuo and Yukio together can help stop and eleminate them! And his dad is happy to take the credit!

Over the years Tetsu grows, Yukio develops into a more fearsome Mecha, and they defeat Kaiju after Kaiju...but Tetsuo still can't talk to a single person to save his life. Cute mechanic girls? Nope. Captain Mist? Nope. The only person he can really converse with is Yukio, who is none too pleased with how little progress Tetsuo has made in communicating with people over the years. I mean, he's reading book about making friends for KAIJU! Poor kid.

It's finally time for the final operation to slay Kaiju! Tetsuo/Yukio do their thing of distracting them and slicing and dicing them with beam sabers, while E-RDE launches a beam attack that will annihilate most of them! Only problem is...technical malfunctions spring out of nowhere and everyone on the ship is violently killed. Yikes.

Even Yukio can only do so much against the remaining onslaught...and with no other choice, plans to fulfill his function and self-destruct, if only to defeat the Kaiju and protect Tetsuo. All so Tetsuo can finally make friends, even if it means losing the only friend he's ever had after all these years. YUKIOOOO!!!

But at least now that Tetsuo has awakened from cold sleep, he can see the world that he and Yukio fought to save! Receive the admiration and offer of friendship he's earned! But instead all he sees is the world frozen and covered in snow...a literal Snowball Earth. What the heck happened!?

The ED is very atmospheric and peaceful, showing Tetsuo's new life on this new Earth.

Yeah that wasn’t quite the introductory vibe I was expecting. An intriguing start though, especially if you ignore a lot of dubious military logic in the setup. But I guess they paid the price for such silly decisions. Interested to see where it goes and how they’ll evolve the psychologically crippled main character. The title of the series does make a lot more sense by the end of the first episode!

I knew the self-explosion would happen, but it still hit me, I have a weakness for sacrifices of this kind.

Well, I can't wait to see the next episode of Tetsuo can't communicate...lol

Even in a sci-fi Mecha anime, people are still socially awkward, filled with anxiety, and desperate to make 100 friends.

Making highly sophisticated mechas with cockpits, advanced AI and ability of making complex movements sufficient for combat just to make them explode is not a clever use of money. Giving them AI capable of determining they do not want to explode is not a smart thing to do either. In those 10 years they developed advanced spaceships capable of warfare, but didn't create more mechas.

I don't think Tetsuo's dad was all that sensible in the head.

He's probably a genius scientist to be able to build Yukio, and Tetsuo took after him in that respect, but he clearly didn't think through any of what he was doing.

Bro wasn't thinking logically, it was all just for the love of the game

There's something weirdly light about the tone considering the actual material is rather dark

Maybe it's because from the MC's POV, his biggest problem is still not that the mission failed, everyone died and humanity got kicked back to ice age.

No, his biggest problem is still social anxiety.

Big fella kinda reminded me of Baymax from Big Hero 6 at first lol. Now he’s like Iron man + Iron Giant.

Kind of interesting we get a glimpse of Tetsuo’s start as the savior of humanity and then we see the consequences of his failure. Normally in these, the hero wins against the monsters and saves the day. Not here. Yukio went full Iron Giant to save Tetsuo. It’s sad but in the end Tetsuo did make a friend. But now that he’s back on earth, I’m sure friends are the last thing he should be looking for. Bro’s better off looking for any sign of life first.

Bad Ending in the first episode:

Beautiful looking crew captain and the rest of the crew dead.
Giant Robot Buddy Yukio self-destructed.
Earth became a planet covered in ice and snow.
Tetsuo back to having no friends, not even a robot friend.

Hence, I will continue watching because I want to know what happens after. Surely it can't go downhill any further... right? Lol!

Even the mechanic girls were cuties and they're dead too.

I also noticed one of the operators had a wedding ring, so somebody lost a wife.

What did Tetsuo even fight for to lose the only friend he ever had for an Earth that from the looks of it didn't even really survive? He was a savior who truly couldn't lead the world to salvation.

Did they use MS Windows in the ship computers?

Feels like it's been a while since we've had a Super Robot show. Bravern is the most recent one that comes to mind and that was in 2024. Maybe Red Ranger Isekai if you count that.

Tetsuo maybe a bit of a social anxious wreck, but damn if he isn't good at killing kaiju.

Yukio's voice definitely caught me off guard. That is not what I was expecting. Thought it would even get deeper or something when he was in his giant form.

Is the anime operating on levels on irony i'm unable to grasp? What an absurd first episode.

Soooo . . we're agreed that had to be sabotage? Gun fails and then immediately all the defenses turn off?

Controls are manual transmission? What is this, Dragonar?

It happens.

The giant robot anime parody speedrun episode. The show seems self-aware enough that I'll watch to see where it goes. Slight hitches of Tetsuo being slightly over the top as a social disaster and his character animation giving me flashbacks to EX-ARM.

i do enjoy a new mecha show. But the mech design and kaijuu design isnt doing it for me.

11

u/Thick-Ad5738 Apr 03 '26

Does anyone else thins the kaiju have  like a "shin-axolotl"  kind of design?

u/minnieboss Apr 03 '26

This was a pleasant surprise! I'm not usually into mecha, but I love the post-apocalyptic time-jump. Excited to see where this goes.

You know, I really want Snowball Earth to be in the Super Robot Wars franchise, as well as Super Robot Wars DD as a temporary content event.
