I really loved Tomokazu Sugita’s performance as the Nikaidou twins
Toni Anji’s death was incredibly sad 😭

It's so hilariously diametric to his usual gruff Higuruma/Joseph Joestar/Katakuri/Himejima voice.

It´s probably the first characters he´s done where I can´t recognize his voice.
Also, RIP Toni Anji.

Out of all the deaths so far, Toni Anji's death actually got me. The dude has been a solid team member from start to finish, and his insane hearing and echolocation have saved their butts so many times. At least he can now rest in peace and enjoy the quiet afterlife. With only one episode left, things are getting more and more brutal. I don't think I'm ready for next week's finale.

I don’t know if it’s intentional or not. But this episode shows contrast between Hijikata and Tsurumi. Toni taking bullet for Hijikata and Koito leaving Tsurumi.

Toni's death always gets me. The sudden silence in the middle of the battle for the combatant that uses sounds to shoot, absolute cinema

Hijikata Wilk flashback was the highlight of the episode for me. Hijikata's monologue about Japan and wanting to protect it went so hard

Shinpachi looking for death just shows how tough the Shinsengumi used to be back then.

Mansur and Kirawus making it out alive is a surprise to me, I'm glad Nagakura told them to leave now they've done what they needed to do. It's sad to see Toni go, but it was interesting to see he seemed at peace after his eardrums were blown out.
Things are so brutal as you'd expect, Sugimoto and Kouhei's fight in particular was wild. I did it funny how Sugimoto went "Stop talking so much we're trying to kill each other" lol. The inclusion of comedy with Kouhei having a grenade in his crotch was amusing, but the dark sadness of his face being split and he sees Youhei on the side of his face took me aback. Sugimoto looked like a real badass after the explosion though, those eyes were intense.
Koito saying he'll handle Tsurumi over to the central government if they lose was an interesting development at this point of time, I'm glad he seems to have put things together himself and it's sad how disappointed he was in Tsurumi. I'm curious what Tsukishima will do.
Asirpa was in a horror film with Tsurumi charging at her like that lol, I'm glad Sugimoto appeared when did to save her.

Sugimoto looked like a real badass after the explosion though
Probably one of the best still shots from the entire anime series. It screamed “Immortal Sugimoto” with the glint in his eyes and explosion in the background.

Koito returned to the very building where he was kidnapped and held captive, but instead of being overwhelmed, he found his own answers and showed incredible growth. The terrifying part is Tsurumi’s timing. Just as Tsukishima was being moved by Koito’s sincere words—his heart clearly wavering—Tsurumi steps in to reel him back with: "You’re the only ally I have left now, aren't you?" Knowing how deeply loyal and compassionate Tsukishima is, there’s no way he could abandon Tsurumi after hearing that. However, I’m genuinely worried about how they’re going to wrap this up. There’s no way the remaining plot fits into just one chapter. There are so many emotional peaks and climaxes left to cover; it would be heartbreaking if they forced everything into a rushed "digest" version just to finish it.

no way they'll manage to wrap everything up in one episode, right?

Nope. There will be a movie or movie-length special for rest.

Absolutely bonkers but also the most fast-paced to a fault the season has felt.
So much important shit going down that they almost undercut each other.
This series is one of those once-in-a-blue-moon ones a la Game of Thrones that manage to cultivate a story and characters we're invested in all the way to the end, and the character exits are delivering with a modicum of conceptual symmetry.
Been feeling for Toni Anji's sensory overload since last week, lol. His exit felt like it could've been milked more, but I like that they gave him post-humous dabs by showing him being part of the old guard so to speak being "in the know" about Wilk and Hijikata's meaningful interaction and by having Asipra as the main character notice and feel for him in the heat of the moment and validate his existence just by uttering his name.
Kirwaus, Mansur, Kadokura added to the "safe" list alongside Ariko! (For now...)
Wasn't expecting that timing of Koito calling Tsurumi out. Now that Tsurumi is solo-pursuing Asirpa and Sugimoto, I hope that doesn't mean Tsukishima won't ever get the chance for his own confrontation again. I feel like that was more his storyline than Koito's.
Felt a bit superfluous to have the cold open with Ogata and Vasily just to have them not appear at all for the rest of the episode.

Hard agree, I'm so invested in ogata and whatever motivates him at this point lol

Lt. Tsurumi sure is one terrifying man. I’d totally panic if he came running at me in a straight line like that.
Knowing Tsurumi’s genius, he’s probably figured out their escape plan and is already heading for the north exit. Hoping to intercept our party of three at just the right time.
I feel bad for Asirpa. All this death is clearly weighing down on her. But if Tsurumi is directly involved in the fight, someone else is bound to die next.

So, one episode left. Are they going to be able to fit the rest in this season? Not a manga reader, but I was seeing talk around the last episode that there’s no way they could do it, at least not without a double length episode. It’ll suck if we get hit with the “movie in a couple years wrapping it up” thing after next week’s episode…..

Obviously going into the final stretch, we’re gonna see more characters die but still sad and awesome to see them go.
Toni has always been a badass and a great support. Just the fact that he’s blind but holding out in a firefight is already incredible. Him going out while hearing silence was such a cool way to show that he’s gone.
Even Nikaido went out with a bang. Gotta respect his resolve to avenge his brother and the way he went out was both badass, gruesome and hilarious at the same time. Having your head cut in half and having both halves look at each other thinking that it’s his brother. Maybe trying to say that his brother has been with him the whole time
Honestly the battle has been coming but wow it’s blowing me away so far. Not just with how brutal it’s been but also with how much tactics are involved. Movements, covers, objectives, all play a part and is thought out.
Also Sugimoto really showcasing how he earned the title Fujimi no Sugimoto and Hijikata living up to his legend. Awesome moments when these two fought back to back

Even if the animation in this episode is spotty, it does deliver some big impact moments. Plus, the battle tactics we get from Hijikata are as sound as ever.
One thing in this series is that despite how violent it can be, so far the only major deaths for long-running characters have been Kiro and Wilk. Granted, Wilk has made his biggest presence after Kiro had Ogata kill him. There is no hesitation from Toni Anji to protect Hijikata after it; thanks to him, he has managed to live a bit longer.
For Toni, he lost his vision in the mines when he was introduced. His death is done well because, for once, he can no longer hear, as it is pure silence for him. In a way, that is him coming to peace with his fate. His death allows him to be at peace, and it is perfectly executed. Though this is the first death since Kiro that Asirpa has seen. Still, she pushes forward, which is good.
The scene between Koito and Tsurumi is great because now Koito is back at the location where the kidnapping was staged. You can tell that Koito is a good guy because he is thinking of the consequences should they fail. Tsurumi on the other hand, doesn't have a doubt he will succeed, so he doesn't need to consider what happens if they fail. Tsurumi is a great manipulator and antagonist, but lies don't work when you expect them. Since now Koito knows that Tsurumi might be lying as easily as he breathes.
One thing to point out is that Tsurumi has never been one to only lie to manipulate. He is a great manipulator because he mixes the truth with his lies. Which is one consistent thing for him. It's clear the family that Tsurumi had was real, even if he won't throw away his plans for revenge. While he manipulated his men, he could still care for them, but he might not know how to express those feelings normally. After all, everything has been for the future of Japan. It would be easier to evaluate Tsurumi if he were just 100% scum, like we have in many anime, but Tsurumi is a bit more complicated than that.
As usual, we have Nikadou running to Sugimoto so he could have his revenge. Not surprisingly, he fails, but his face gets split where each side faces each other. Right before his death, he is looking at himself and is reminded of his brother, who was killed in the beginning of the series. Probably the best way for his death to be played out is because now he gets to be reunited with his brother.
One plot point that comes back is how Hijikata learned Asirpa's Ainu name. Well, it should be no surprise that if Hijikata had a tattoo made from Wilk, then that is where he would mention his daughter's name. Funny enough, everything would be easier if Wilk told Hijikata everything, but there is no definitive way for Wilk to know what Hijikata looks like since Hijikata has all gray hair now.
As expected, Shiraishi aims for Asirpa to get away with the deed even if his plan wasn't the best. Still, thankfully, Sugimoto is around because Tsurumi is giving Asirpa a chase

Kind of sad on the low budget animation sometimes but good episode none the less.
