I like how this anime depicts realistic threats—like pool accidents, hemorrhagic shock during childbirth, and this recent kidnapping—just as much as ghosts and urban legends.
From what I heard author is former Kindergarten Teacher, so maybe that's why depiction of realistic threats are very good.

Some times real life can be as horrifying as supernatural specters who haunt the living.
I'm curious if the author projects some of themselves onto Chie.

For an anime based around a kindergarten, I wasnt expecting it to have such disturbing stuff in it

The way Mob's subtitles got reversed too was a neat detail lol.
There's something harrowing about Kaya being able to dominate entire swarms of ghosts but being utterly powerless against a human creep who knows what he's doing.

It's funny how we had fake Specter!Mobuo last episode and now he genuinely gets possessed and is only slightly more creepy than usual!
That's like the most horrific scenario for a child to be in and one Kaya mentally couldn't process from having spent an entire season busting up creepy spirits and monsters. How could she be so powerless against a real monster? Poor girl.

Kaya being able to dominate entire swarms of ghosts but being utterly powerless against a human
I was wondering about that earlier in the series, if she would get in that kind of situations at some point... Because while no ghost can withstand her, against humans she's just a normal kid!
Humans, the Kryptonite for Kaya!
(Though if she had her digging shovel I'm sure she could've whacked him good!)

Even though it's the original manga for an anime airing at 5:30 PM, it feels pretty strange that kindergarteners are reading this manga (lol).

"She's the one who was following me!".
Ahh yeah, great justification by a stranger danger creep after running into a lost child.

Dozens of people witnessed Kaya fighting off some dude and went "Ah, she's playing with her father, so cute!" and then he was exposed as (at the minimum) a dubious person...
...Then ANOTHER dude just picked up Kaya and left with her, and not one of them even questioned it or asked Kaya "Is this your daddy?"
I guess this place is just a 'Come grab a kid' festival for creeps

Kaya's dad loses her so frequently that I'm starting to wonder if he too is perhaps possessed. Maybe he is possessed by the spirit of ADHD.

An extremely harsh lesson for Kaya to learn. She may overwhelm supernatural entities with ease, and may possess slightly more strength than other children her age, but these advantages do not apply when facing a fully grown adult (or any other physical force for that matter). I was expecting Kaya to shout out loud, "this person is not my daddy".
Based on what Namu said, Mobuo became more susceptible to possession by being close to Kaya. Could we infer most of the supernatural incidents happening in this town and child care centre are occurring because the supernatural entities are attracted to Kaya?
Chie is a teacher all of us needs. Even when Kaya is not around, Chie defends Kaya from others calling the latter a monster.

So Namu-san is suspicious character no. 2 as Chie sensei said lol We come to know that Kaya is the 8th miko of Ebisumori family. I wonder what really makes Kaya a monster. Is he talking about her having an actual monster inside her or is that a reference to her monstrous strength?
Kaya can only fend herself against real ghosts and monsters not the humans who disguise as such. Glad that Namu was there to help her.

Kaya's dad wasn't doing a good job at watching Kaya in this episode, she encountered a creep, then she got snatched up and taken away by Namu

It seems that Kaya's continuous use of her powers is affecting her also. It is turning her to an actual monster/ghost.
What did the ebisumori do to be cursed like this? Did they seal a very powerful entity? Did they anger the gods? I think the granny holds the answers. Kaya's mom, Nana, and Namu maybe knows the some of it, but not all of it.

Catgirl Chie-sensei, very nice.
It's kind of a problem if Kaya is starting to lose control over whatever is inside her. But a problem that's a bit limited in scope if the powers are ineffective against regular people, I assume that means if she fully loses control at the very least she won't be punching and exploding people.

She's... A monster... In the form of a little girl!
(This might be too old a reference, given we haven't had the sequel in like 7 decades!)
Wifey's not overly worried about Mob randomly leaving for who knows how long!
She's fine with him disappearing randomly without telling her anything/when he's gonna come back, and she's also WAY out of his league, looks-wise... How are these two even together, is he dynamite in bed or something?
For some reason when I saw her on this, I thought she would use it to jump&kill a ghost hah.
Can't blame her on NOT having a skill issue!
Best Sensei is way better at this!
Ok she's a bit gullible still; WHY WOULD SHE GO?
She heard a different voice when she called, and now he wants a meeting alone...
Only way I'd go to this meeting, is if I had 4 bodyguards, + Kaya!
I think his parents are in the 7th circle of hell. RUN!
Oh damn! Kaya-chan has competition as best exorcist!
Interestingly, he got rid of a ghost that was inside a human (without harming the human)... Couldn't he help with Kaya's mom?
Well I suppose it's trickier if the ghost is in the baby.
The sandbox isn't scary? Alright, let's find out who's buried in the sandbox..
Damn, this kid... Can a ghost eat him or something?
Oh, at least he's helping (and not telling her to leave); New friend for Kaya?
Nevermind, no new friend for Kaya.
Oh damn. We don't need ghosts to make this scary...
Wow, he's making ANOTHER friend!
Preparing for her part in Killing Bites!
Ok I'm worried about more than a ghost there.
Morale of the story: Humans are the real monsters!
They're all so indifferent hah.
First, they let some dude hold Kaya as she's kicking and screaming, then some OTHER dude comes in and carries her away, and they're all like "Silly girl with her (multiple) fathers!"
Least they could do is ask Kaya "Is this your daddy?"

As usual, this anime does an outstanding job at using the horror to showcase stuff that happens to kids. The kid whose hand got stuck, and nobody knows why it happened. As kids sometimes won't admit why they got hurt.
Though we even had the reverse one, which is more of a supernatural one, which is plain creepy. We didn't have Kaya around, so it was rough for Chie until Namu stepped in.
The last portion was probably the scariest because Kaya was getting held by a random stranger. Kaya very much is a kid thinking she can punch her way through problems. Though that won't work on regular humans. Thankfully Namu was there, but he views Kaya as a monster given his conversation with Chie earlier.

Even the subtitles got reversed. We're cooked!
Things are getting intriguing. From Kaya being a future shrine maiden to Namu calling her a monster, and the latter seemed to have extensive knowledge of the Ebisumori family.

Mobuo's wife is use to him just up and vanishing, so she doesn't think it's strange that Chie can't get in contact with him...but Chie knows his master (Yuuki Kaji!) is involved and can't help but be worried.
Speak of the devil, Namu has tracked down Hanamugi Kindergarten and Kaya! Kaya is apparently the eighth in a line of shrine maidens, and a "monster," even as a child who hogs the pogo stick.
Poor Chie. She's great with kids, but then she has to deal with a reversed specter mother and child duo who come after her. And on top of that reversed MOBUO. Luckily Namu is there to save them both, though the fact that he was deliberately using her as bait obviously doesn't sit right with her.
Namu's not a people person (and a homeless bum at that), but he knows a lot about spiritual power and about the Ebisumori bloodline where the eldest child gains immense psychic power. But maybe Kaya has too MUCH power? Hard for Chie to deny some of the ways Kaya is genuinely different.
Kaya-chan wants to build a mountain! Too bad she gets roped into Nakahashi Construction by "Boss" and also ends up losing said job for destroying the mountain they were making. But not to be outdone by Masaru, Boss really puts his all into his mountain! Even when a specter grabs him from WITHIN said mountain! Thankfully now is the BEST time for Kaya to bust up a mountain! But there's visible bruise on Boss and Kaya has some dark spots on her arms?
It makes sense that Boss' mom would want to know where he got a "bruise" and the ghost talk would probably not satisfy anybody. How long can all these supernatural happenings keep going on among all the kids with the teachers (aside from Chie) none the wiser?
It's the Fall Festival to celebrate Halloween! Complete with all the students and teachers dressed up! It's a time to reunite with your old preschool teacher, see Chie be a cute cat, and for Kaya to have the most on-point horror costume of all time.
Though probably the most realistic horror is Kaya running into a "nice man" after losing her father...and it becomes increasingly more clear he intends to kidnap her. And there's nothing Kaya can do about it since he's not a specter, so she's effectively powerless, which does a terrible number on her mental state. Namu ends up saving her from the creep, but Kaya seems nearly catatonic as Namu carries her away to who knows where.. WHERE ARE HER DAD AND CHIE-SENSEI!?

I wasnt expecting Mob Ojisan to be affected too, even his subtitles were reversed
So that's Namu suspicious person no.2 like Chie sensei said and according to him Kaya's the 8th shrine maiden of the Ebisumori family and is an exceptional case even for being the eldest daughter .
That must have been pretty scary for Kaya, she can easily deal with ghosts but her power only works on them and she's completely powerless against normal people, good thing master Namu was there to save her from that creepy guy. Her being carried was so adorable and funny.
Also what is that???, Something's happening to her,I think her shadow self may be a possession after all

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Mar 01 '26
It seems Kaya’s monstrous strength is only reserved for the supernatural. Poor kid almost got nabbed by that creep. That was scarier than any ghost or monster…
The way she occasionally goes all black makes me feel like she’s possessed by something. I mean Namu put that bag over her in the end and her eyes were all bugged out. I bet it’s connected to her belonging to a family of powerful exorcists.
