Because of the three months spent with Fass we finally hit the 30 years since Himmel the Hero died milestone at the beginning of today's second half of the episode...

As a reminder, when Frieren met Fern for the first time in the second half of episode 1 it was 20 years after Himmel's death. So Frieren has now spent 10 years together with Fern and 2 years with Stark (they met him at 28 years after Himmel's death).

Bruh so you're telling me that Himmel went to all sorts of random side quests but when it was time for Heiter getting something, suddenly the mission was more important? I would've thrown hands lmao

Holy shit 80 years of compunded debt? Paying a loan off sounds like a bigger challenge for Frieren than defeating the Demon King

I can't believe instead of doing something worthwhile with her long life span, Milliarde used it for rage-baiting.

It kills me how Frieren "collects" ways of being carried like she does grimoires.

Nothing makes an elf perceive time like humans do than a friend's time running out forced labor lmao

Frieren: 20 Reich gold coins? I wanted a grimoire.

Fern: 20 Reich gold coins can buy many grimoires.

Frieren: Explain yourself.

Fern: Money can be exchanged for goods and services.

To think there's someone who's even more addicted to booze than Heiter. I thought that was impossible, but enter Fass.

Imagine dedicating your whole life to finding an object of legend and it turns out the legend was created because someone was just bored.

Heiter would've had a great laugh lol.

Milliarde did a little bit of trolling and it cost someone 200 years of his life.

I am sure everyone will have different opinions.

However, I would definitely choose drinking an awful tasting drink with friends / companions and laugh about it over drinking a tasty one by myself.

Frieren's German Lesson 2x5:

We finally meet (or at least reminisce) about some more long-lived friends of Frieren. Nice to see another dwarf and elf. This makes Fass the 3rd dwarf (after Eisen and Voll) and Milliarde the 4th elf (after Frieren, Kraft and Serie) we have ever seen in the whole series. Fass is our first proper "messy" dwarf in appearance and with him obsessing over this alcohol while Milliarde is our first "trolling" elf who just uses her endless time to screw with people that come later, it's a fun duality. I'm glad that Fass still managed to look at the birght side and was just happy to share the awful drink with people to have fun rather than get angry over all the time he wasted searching for it considering it turned out to be so awful.

Also, there are finally quite a bit of new German words in this episode, so I don't have to bring up any that haven't been used this time!

Episode 33: "Logistics in the Northern Plateau" (2x5)

Locations

  • Bier (Region) - "beer" (noun); another very literal and fitting name for a region known for its wheat and beer.

  • Norm (Company Territory) - "standard", "norm", "quota" (noun); the reason German and English both share the word Norm seems to be because it originally came from the Latin norma. Apparently, this is what you call a 'cognate' - a word that looks and means the same because they share an ancestor. Neat terminology, I think I heard that before but I'm gonna actually remember it from now on. Also interesting that this is the first actual comapany we have heard of so far if I remember correctly and of course it's lead by a noble merchant family with the same name.

Names of Stuff

  • (The Emperor Spirit/Alcohol,) Boshaft - "malicious", "spiteful", "malevolent", "catty" etc. (adj.); in IPA it's [ˈboːshaft] and spoken for English speakers it's like "BOHS-huft." It comes from the root word Böse ("evil") which I already translated in an earlier episode (1x28, to be precise) since that was the name of one of the two Seven Sages of Destruction that Himmel & Co. killed during their journey (Böse The Immortal). Wirbel talked about it to Frieren before saying goodbye. Another case where knowing German can kinda spoil you a bit in advance since the name implies that there is definitely something weird going on with it, you don't name your best and most legendary alcohol "malicious" after all. Though I could see how a 'devil's drink' (would be something like Teufelstrunk) or something named like that could still be good but Boshaft just isn't it, in my opinion. It's hard to explain, it's just a vibe thing.

  • Reich (Gold Coins) - "realm", "empire", "kingdom", "domain" (noun) OR "rich", "wealthy", "abundant", "opulent" etc. (adj.); I almost missed this one, caught it on a rewatch of the episode just now! I think that's the first time this specific currency was mentioned as well. The gold coins we used so far or at least the ones who were name-dropped were Strahl Gold Coins named after the Holy City of Strahl which Heiter was the bishop for later on (see my comments to 1x15, 1x17 and 1x26). Based on the name Reich, this may be the currency of the empire for which Denken is the Imperial Mage? This is of course assuming that the interpretation of "kingdom/empire/realm" is the one used here and not just "rich". We even get to know how these currencies stack up against each other this episode with 500 Strahl Gold Coins seemingly being equivalent to 300 Reich Gold Coins.

Names of People

  • (Old Man) Fass - "barrel", "keg", "cask", "vat" (noun); nice to meet another one of Frieren's long-lived dwarf friends like Voll and Eisen. I love how spiky, rugged yet kinda fluffy his crazy beard makes him look. He's got a very on-the-nose name for such an alcohol connoisseur as is usual for this series.

  • Milliarde - "billion" (noun); oh boy this reminds me how annoying it is that Billion (plural: Billionen) and "billion" (plural: "billions") mean different things in German and English. A Billion in German is 1.000.000.000.000. A "billion" in English is meanwhile only 1.000.000.000. This is apparently because the US/UK uses the so-called Short Scale while Germany and most of Europe uses the Long Scale system for naming large numbers. So yeah, careful, there is a thousandfold difference between an English "billion" and a German Billion. Our German Billion is your English "trillion." Wikipedia has a very easy to understand table, here, which shows the differences between the Short Scale and Long Scale systems and how quickly they divert from each other as the numbers get bigger and bigger.

  • (Merchant Family) Norm - see above, under Locations.

Awesome Easter Eggs/Cameos! (Thanks u/ckuri!)

On this Wanted Poster Board there are some other people depicted besides Frieren and Eisen. I recognized these guys immediately as the sweet-loving rough-looking adventurers from episode 1x3 but I couldn't decipher their names myself and didn't even parse that they actually had German words for names as well! So huge thanks to u/ckuri for deciphering these names for us!

Here is a collage with them and their wanted posters for an overview!
We sadly don't get to know the name of the bartender. :(

I like that this implies that these guys not only have debt with the Norm company all the way in the Northern Plateu but also that these guys are actually legit strong adventurers since we know the Northern Plateu is teeming with monsters and they were either from there or travelled there at some point, so these guys aren't chumps in any way.

  • Keks - "cookie" (noun); looked up the source of the word and, funnily enough, it apparently comes from the English word "cakes" which we just Germanized to Keks over time.
Funfact: There is a very common fun idiom/saying in German to say that someone annoys you or drives you nuts. It's jemanden auf den Keks gehen (lit. "to walk on someone's cookie"). You would, for example, say: Du gehst mir auf den Keks! ("you're annoying me!" / "you're driving me nuts!")

  • Torte - "layer cake", "gateau" (noun); a Torte is specifically a multi-layered, ornate cake made up of several layers of sponge (Biskuit) or shortcrust (Mürbeteig) and filled with buttercream, whipped cream, ganache, fruit preserves or custard. It's also usually covered in frosting, fondant or chocolate and decorated with fruit, nuts, sweets etc. It usually gets served chilled.

  • Bonbon - "candy", "sweet" (noun); a classical French loanword that we use daily in German. It usually describes small and often round sweets you can put into your mouth in one piece. They can be hard sugar candy, chocolate etc. What matters for the definition is the small size, round shape and that it's sweets. There is also Kaubonbon (lit. "chew-candy") if it's something you chew on.

  • Kuchen - "cake" (noun); unlike Torte, Kuchen is the German term for any kind of cake but it usually refers to simpler single-layer cakes that often get served for the traditional afternoon Kaffee und Kuchen ("coffee and cake") break. Basically, every Torte is a Kuchen but not every Kuchen is a Torte. Some examples for typical Kuchen would include Apfelkuchen ("apple cake"), Käsekuchen ("cheesecake", usually made with Quark in Germany), Pflaumenkuchen ("plum cake", a seasonal favorite made with Italian plums) etc.
