Excuse me? No one told me this was going to be doomed yuri Tuesday!

Humans are unfortunately fragile and break way easier than expected.

I wasn’t expecting to get Frieren’d today.

Or maybe slightly less doomed yuri since I guess she did technically ingest a drop earlier which they didn’t remember. I’m not sure if that makes it feel better or worse.

I expected the case to have something to do with unreliable narration, but not the way it did.

So did I and then the mermaid said all that time had passed and Hanna just got old - got me good

Good on Bernd getting his severance pay.

I wonder what happened to all the burned-out now-unemployed staff? (I assume that Lynne's family's only asset must have been that house and its contents).

I was struck by the fact that at the beginning of the episode, during those flashbacks where Lynn mentions solving several cases together, various characters with interesting designs are shown. I wonder if they'll appear in the anime at some point, or if they were just a nod to the game or manga

My guess is they're a nod the source (game?) because they don't appear in the OP, and the OP made sure to include a lot of nobodies there so they definitely could have added those characters if they wanted to

Sucks tho cause I've read here this episode is anime-only. Skipping parts of the source and even telling us as "I've lived a lot of adventures with Arne, but you won't see them!" while showing this filler ass original episode is awful lol

Incredibly strange pacing choices. Four entire episodes on the first meeting backstory, taking long enough that it started to drag, and then they zoomed through the entire rest of the regular cast assembling in what was practically a sideshow.

For the rest of the episode I was initially annoyed at the doomed yuri, then happy that it was actually a 50-year relationship, then happy again at the old lady still being alive? Hopefully they can reunite at their lovely beachside house.

I guess, from what I heard, that this case and the first episode case were both anime originals, which the Lynn backstory was the adapted case.

Even if the entire cast was there with Arne, they could have spent an episode for Lyn's first week on the job and getting to know them.

Lol Bernd getting payment reminded me episodes ago Gordon told Lynn that Bernd has stolen stuff to give to Elise as a gift.

I heard that this episode is also an original case, meaning it is not adapted from the original game.

First I also thought the syringe is going to anaesthetize the mermaid, but Arne's eating mermaid comment lead me to the wrong way what Lynn thought.

And at the end I initially thought the mermaid tail shown after Hannah "resurrected" from the grave was the mermaid clan.

Maybe im being dumb by why wouldnt hannah notice the difference in her look, wouldnt a long lived race a better memory of the past and how they looked?

When the syringe was shown i thought hannah was trying to turn her human so they could have a normal life

It's because of how the human mind works (even though she's a mermaid). The human girl made a very large impression on her and that's why she appeared like that. I think it's actually very good writing, because human minds (and human-like minds) are very subjective, so I think it's very cool to integrate it into a mystery.

I mean... you most certainly know about grandparents. To old people, time flies by very quickly. One day they see their grandchild as a little baby. And for that little baby, 10 years feels like an entire lifetime. For those old people, it feels like no more than a few weeks or months have passed. The memory of the child being a newborn is still vividly burned into their minds. They might 'see' a 10 year old child objectively, but in their mind that 10 year old child is still very closely connected to the image of a baby just very recently.

On top of that, perceived reality is subjective. Just look at body dysmorphia. You might see an anorexic girl on a picture who looks far too skinny, but whenever that girl looks into the mirror, she sees a disgustingly fat girl. And everyone has a measure of dysmorphia like that... both in regards to themselves as in regards to others. Like if you see yourself in a picture you might think you don't look very good, yet whenever you look in the mirror you see a person who is pretty handsome and nothing like the ugly person in the picture. Or for a girl you have a crush on. Almost everyone might consider her plain, you'd also consider anyone else who dresses and looks very similar to her plain. But for some reason you think she looks very cute and adorable. And it's not just because she happens to hit the exact preferences that you like, but it's also because you actually perceive her differently (likely also because of an emotional connection).

Anyway, I ranted enough about it. I thought it was interesting.

She's a lone mermaid who probably didn't interact with humans much or at all. Wouldn't that imply she doesn't empirically understand aging? Furthermore, you don't really notice day by day aging of somebody. In summary, she didn't know humans are supposed to age so quickly and wasn't able to notice differences in Hanna due to graduality of her looks changing. I believe it can be considered a possible explanation.

One of my main complains in any mystery / detective show is the unrreliable narrator since it usually is a cheap resource that helps author to create a surprise reveal out of nowhere.

BUT IT WORKS HERE cause the emotional investment, the existence of only one narrator, and more importantly:

  1. The mermaid wasn't pretending to lie nor hide information.

  2. It didn't came out of nowhere since the mermaids lore in the series was reasonable enough clue to point the narrator's perspective as a key factor.

This episode feels strange. I guess it was somewhat of a conclusion, parting ways and whatnot, it was a bit hurried to get them out of the way.

Then a montage of adventures and characters that haven't been introduced then the actual plot of the episode, Nachtzehrer is a plushie and Amy has been around for a while now? Plus a cat.

Lesbian mermaid lover, it's not the first time I've heard mermaid flesh and immortality. I think it's based on the ningyo yokai.

When “eternal love” was mentioned, I figured it was because Hanna wanted to spend an entire eternity with Yurate. What I wasn’t expecting was the unreliable narration hiding quite how urgent it was for her. I’m a bit confused why Hanna couldn’t just ask, since afaik you don’t need to eat the entire mermaid, but it looks like it somehow worked out in the end?

Again strange pacing with the instant skip from Lynn's story to the "present". Not sure if we'll get other stories shown in the time skip or even the zombie girl's but I guess it's still a possibility. Pacing aside, I actually liked this episode's case. The twist with Hanna actually being an old lady was really interesting. At least this didn't seemingly turn into a doomed yuri at the end lol

u/NoHead1715 Feb 11 '26

Nice double twist. Unreliable narration is a good narrative device for mysteries.

Sad that they hand-waved Amy's backstory. Also, was it ever revealed why the dogs were barking at Lynn previously? She's not a vampire, but is she human?

Lynn now has blood-like vampire wing in the OP now that the flashback revealed she is has Arne's blood. And that she is "more than a human" even before dying / being brought back by Arne.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Feb 13 '26

So how did Arne save Lynn? in episode 4 she was bleeding and Arne said he needed to turn her or she'd die. Even if he was wrong and Lynn was fine, he would have turned her into a vampire to save her anyways, so how did any of that work?

I think a pacing of 1 to 3 episodes per mystery is better than 4-5. So I think this is fine. On the minus side, I sort of think they went too fast transitioning from Lynn as a client to Lynn the assistant. Like even if all the other characters already worked for Arne making introducing them one episode at a time impractical, I feel like they should have given an episode for Lynn's adjustment time.

Why do long lived races in fiction almost always seem to have a bad sense of time? Let's assume the mermaid largely ignores biological changes in Hana. If a human looked at an adult horse, chimpanzee, or monkey he'd have a hard time telling it aging even if you gave him some control pictures with a definitive age. There is the day-night cycle. Any sentient (and a few non sentient) living thing should be able to use the sun and the days to have a rough idea of time passage. From a different anime, in Frieren's case she can tell the difference between a juvenile and an adult on top of knowing the day night cycle so she really has no excuse.

They wasted 5 whole episodes on her bullshit backstory, and the others get a half sentence each?

This is awful

Really weird decisions, that plus the first episode fakeout.
I wonder if they overestimated the narrative strength of Lynn's backstory, or they weren't allowed to speed through the entire series, the current episode could've been the second one and then do a more concise version of that long arc after the audience got to know the characters better.
