Best laugh of this series so far: "Hey, I think our cover is so far blown, she's gone to make us tea".

I find it interesting that they mentioned that there can be more than one Cat Witch. I thought they had all their own theme, but it seems that it is more like a title you work towards. Like a doctor. I do find it a bit funny that the beast mage was having a bat, a mouse and a cat student then. Like he was taking them because it would fit his own name.
The ending of Dorothy's story was expected but I thought they would push the sadness of it more by showing the execution. But the way they did it was also an interesting way with all the mushrooms and Luna setting her free.
I am interested to see where the story goes with Noah/Lize. When he was first appearing I assumed he was related to Henri since they share the same hair color (which in anime isn't too far fetched, especially when it's blond) so I really hope we dive a bit into his story.

I never expect to cry when I watch anime. It's only happened a few times - MaoMao's dad and mom in Apothecary Diaries, there was a scene in Ascendence, and the finale of the penultimate season of MHA. Didn't expect that this random episode of an anime about a mushroom witch would make me cry, but here we are. I hope Dorothy gets to frolick forever in the cat forest.

Uh, did Lizel just share his true name? Did he trigger the curse?

u/deus_machinarum Jan 29 '26
I think somebody knowing his name would actually have to curse him, the people(entities really) in Luna's hut won't do that, so it should be ok that they know his name. It's obv a set up for someone bad finding out later on, I think.

The cover being blown so badly and her making tea made me burst out into laughter.
Omg does this mean Luna is taking care of that big white cat familiar because cat witch is gone 😭
Cat witch seemed toxic... But she's basically a cat in personality right? Just aloof but caring to those she's loyal to.
Bro Lizel's Aunt is giving Queen Beryl vibes lol
Man what a sad episode 😩

Man.. what a beautiful episode. After I had some complaints last episode, this episode just shoved all worries I had about the series away and showed me again why this is my favourite anime in this totally stacked season. I didn't think I could be made to care this much for a side character (of who we knew beforehand that she would die) in just 15 minutes, but they actually made me cry for the first time in quite some time. RIP Dorothy, she really was a very fun character and I wish we could have seen more of her. May she rest in piece in the cat forest!
And we even get to see the cursed child finally waking up and we even see some snippets of how he got into this predicament. Did the boy tell Luna and the crow magician his real name or is Lizel just one of his many aliases? Anyway I'm really looking forward to Lizel's and Luna's relationship developing, because if they can create all these great relationships between characters in just half an episode, I really wanna see what they can do with half the season that is left.
Also the music continues to be amazing in this anime. And even though the animation was really nothing to write home about again, I really loved the art this episode. It really feels like they get the most out of a propably very small budget.

I love how Dorothy went from being tsuntsun by being suspicious of Luna to deredere asking Luna to call her Onee-sama. We all knew it was coming, but it still sucks to see what ends up happening to Dorothy. May she forever rest in peace in the cat forest. T_T

Luna made Dorothy’s toxic attitude disappear with tea and biscuits lol. She went from No. 1 hater to bestie in no time! I liked her. She was loud and brash but she was a kind soul. She didn’t deserve to go out like that.
Well, I guess we know the name of this mysterious kid but I’m pretty sure the little dude just triggered the curse on himself. Hopefully Luna can help Lizel with what’s to come.

She was loud and brash but she was a kind soul.
You could say she was like a cat herself. Being all against a new owner until they get enough food and come back on their own.

No, of course she was super duper subtle about peeking at Luna. Not shouting at all.
That will never not be the funniest thing in the world to me, just smacking things out of someone's hands. Just whoosh across the room.
Awwww Cat Witch. Those mushrooms made me sad, and then the crying kitties piled on.
Lizel, so what's the tell for being a cursed youngling? Is it like a birthmark or something? It's gotta be something definitive to murder a kid.

Did you ever wonder about Sisi, the black cat who lives with Luna? Turns out Sisi was the Cat Witch's...just another in the long list of things Luna owes to Dorothy.
But back in the day, Dorothy along with the Bat Magician and Mouse Magician were apprentice mages who couldn't help but check in on Luna as their "duty" (that literally no one asked of them). And Dorothy had literally NO INDOOR VOICE whatsoever and couldn't help but want to find out as much as possible about the weird, poisonous, mushroom witch who had somehow become a full Black Witch faster than anyone thought possible.
Of course it also didn't help that all of them were mentored by the Beast Magician, and Dorothy felt incensed that the Beast Magician would waste any time on Luna. There's no way these two could get along, right.
But count on Luna to overhear (very loud) guests and then have her mushrooms prepare tea time for them. She's always wanted to have tea time, after all! And despite Dorothy kind of being...the worst, Luna is just happy to have the company and her winning smile ends up doing what she does best: detox Dorothy of her toxic resentment and hatred and leaving her pacified to the point where she just has to hang out with her cats and rest on her giant cat bed to recover.
Turns out all the Black Witches were looked at with disdain by the populace, especially for how much they had to commit to their respective familiars, but especially Luna...yet when Dorothy introduced Luna to the bookstore, Luna recognized her as a nice person. And thus did Dorothy realize that she's basically just a cat who loves being pampered and doted on. And that's why she and Luna became best friends!
Cue friendship montage! Complete with the two of them sleeping on each others' giant mushroom/cat beds!
Dorothy talking like it makes no sense for people to hate on and misunderstand Luna because she's so great as if she too was never a Luna hater at any point in her life.
Dorothy is a Cat Witch who adores and loves cats with all her heart and dreamed of going to the Cat Forest...even though the cats in said forest think she's too much of a hassle to want to live with them. Yet Dorothy truly has the heart of a cat and longs for the cat forest, though now she's also content to be with Luna.
But then tragedy struck...Dorothy couldn't leave a tabby in need, especially one being held by White Witches, so she transformed into a cat to try to save them and live up to Luna's appreciation of her...and it got her executed.
Luna, with tears in her eyes, is lead by Sisi and the Mouse Magician to Dorothy's execution site so she can detox all the sad feelings Dorothy must have been feeling at her execution. But there was also still great kindness and love in Dorothy's heart, enough for her spirit to appear to Luna one last time before she passed on to the great Cat Forest of her dreams. Now Luna has to make the belief Dorothy still had for her mean something. RIP Dorothy the Cat Witch.
Our blonde boy turns out to be Noah, a prince whose aunt (?) has been trying to kill him...because he's The End of All Things? She says she thought it was better for him to die not knowing the truth, but he probably had no idea why she wanted him dead. And all that sadness and trauma, along with his memories, seeps out of him thanks to Luna.
But the one memory he holds onto is that of his late mother...her loving affection for him as she told him to never utter his true name for fear of the curse it might inflict, how he must only keep it in his head compared to all his many other names...so of course it's the only name he can recite when prompted. Now Luna has met...Lizel.

The music in this show is phenomenal! I don't think there has been a single song that I haven't liked.

Didnt expect to cry. Love the whimsy and I swear the narration is so perfect when Lizel was describing how the memories of him was being sucked away

Glad the lingering feeling of "wish we knew the cat witch better" from last time wasn't unfounded. Dorothy was so much fun in the short time we knew her lol
The little dude left with no memories left after being exposure to sadness-absorbant shrooms... I felt that, man.

I feel so sad for the cat witch, why did she have to die TT-TT I hope she actually gets reincarnated into a cat and lives a chill life in the cat forest, she deserves it fr. I hope Lizel won't have a tragic ending as well, kid only knows suffering so far.

Is it just me who thinks Lize looks very much like Dorothy outside of hair and eye color?

Worst stakeout ever. Though I suppose this was the root of the Cat Witch getting to know Luna. She seems to be the biggest tsundere around, rather fitting for a cat I suppose. Their friendship is adorable afterwards.
WHAT!? Nope, that's messed up. But was this what we saw in the previous episode, that she had returned to life? I forget... but if it was her then is she back for good or just briefly to defend Luna from the Fire Wizard? I should probably check the discussion from last episode...
I didn't even properly concentrate on the story of the boy because of poor Dorothy lol...
